Quoted from the speaker’s presentation: ‘Dietary Strategies to Improve Gut Health and Piglet Performance’ Presented by Dr. Graziano Mantovani, Technical Application Lead, Swine, and Ms. Kitima Jindamongkon, Technical Application Lead, Provimi Southest Asia at the seminar ‘’Unlock Animal Productivity Potential through Gut health” on March 16, 18th in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Gut health is affected by many factors

How Nutrition and Feed management Influences Piglet Gut Health? Feed Intake

o Increasing pre-weaning and post-weaning feed intake is very important o Shortened villi impacts significantly on the piglet feed intake

Feeding Program Strategy Feed Intake is the “Key” for improve weight gain Feeding Program Strategy: Consider to use creep feed to improve

performance before weaning Piglets during the weaning process suffer significant physiological

and digestive stressors Consider to use creep feed to improve performance before

weaning Variability in feed ingredient quality and nutrient composition

Understand the variability of nutrient content in raw material High digestibility raw material is important to complement the

developing immature digestive system in the early days post weaning

Consider to use ideal protein ration and SID to do formulation Undigested protein and fermentable carbohydrate in diet are two

key nutrient in piglet

Monitoring the quality of ingredients and adjusting the matrix in feed formulation program;

Selecting ingredients according to nutrient availability and the age of piglet (pre-starters);

More accuracy in feed formulation (“safety margin”); Formulate with digestible nutrients controlling protein fermentation

Market Story Future trends of the livestock industry

Green – safe farming trend increasingly focused by producers as the consumers expressed concern over "dirty" food.

Anti antibiotic trend: Facing to increasing concern, the producers also shift to antibiotic reduction in raising animal. Antibiotic reduction and contribute to world food safety is a wise step.

The trend for organic food production: Organic food means that animals are raised naturally, without the use of antibiotic growth promoters. Those result in less chemicals, antibiotic-free or growth hormone-free products. However, it is expensive than normal food, easily infected and damaged, less harvest but require meticulous care.

GMO trend: Although there are much controversy, but research of genetics researcher Alison Van Eenennaam, University of California indicated, genetic modified food is as safe and nutritious as organic food, and there is no unusual issues. With large data observed, can assert no effects of genetically modified food to health or nutritional value of livestock. Read more

Russia bans imported corn and soybean from US

Russia has banned imports of U.S. corn and soybeans base on what it calls “unsafe” and “infected” product, according to reports. Russian officials have expressed “serious concern’’ about unsafe grain product batches,” according to Rosselkhoznadzor, Russia’s federal service for veterinary and phytosanitary surveillance. The U.S. Embassy in Moscow has also expressed their disappointment with Russia’s decision:“We are disappointed with the decision. The U.S. supplies soybeans and corn all over the world. The U.S. government made several attempts to negotiate the issue to eliminate all the concerns related to imports of the goods. We are sorry for Russian consumers to lose one of the major corn and soy suppliers especially under the conditions of a soaring inflation rate,” the embassy’s press secretary, William Stevens, told RIA Novosti. World Feed Panorama: Compound feed tonnage hits 884 MMT

Feed International's World Feed Panorama report shows world compound feed production by industrial manufacturers for food animals and aquaculture reached 884.4 million metric tons in

2015. Compound animal, aqua feed tonnage increased by 1.6 percent in 2015 — with much of the recent growth coming from emerging markets. One of the most significant factors to affect the survey’s results over the years has been the dominance of the biggest players, and we found that the two largest producers have switched ranking positions. In past years, the first place for size has been taken regularly by the People’s Republic of China. For 2015, however, we place the United States in the No. 1 slot on the basis of the volume of compound feeds produced. Read more

Swine Story Antibiotic Use in Vietnam According to the data reported by 15 hospitals under the Ministry of Health, provincial hospitals in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hue, Da Nang, Ho. Ho Chi Minh, about the use of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance period 2008 - 2009 showed that in 2009, 30-70% gram-negative bacteria were resistant to the 3rd- generation cephalosporin and 4th generation, nearly 40-60% of that resist aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones. Nearly 40% of Acinetobacter strains with reduced sensitivity to imipenem. Some research in 2009, 2010 showed that in the livestock industry has so much abuse of synthetic antibiotics, the number of households using antibiotics from 3-6 active ingredients accounted for 27% of porker farms, 24% of the pig farms and 10% of the chicken farms. The use of antibiotics and veterinary chemicals based primarily on experience result in farmers arbitrarily increase the dose and therapy. Use of antibiotics in accordance with symptoms (44%), as designated by the veterinary staff is 33%, the use of antibiotics as recommended by manufacturers accounted for 17% and only 6% farm antibiotic use according to antimicrobial susceptibility test results. Drug resistance is increasingly serious and the increase of this problem have a big impact on public health. We are faced with the possibility of a future without antibiotics effective treatment for a number of infectious diseases, especially for surgery and treatments, such as cancer chemotherapy and tissue, human body parts transplantation. Take action right from today to protect the health of each individuals and the entire community. Read more FDA Moves to Ban Cancer-Causing Pork Antibiotic

The Food and Drug Administration proposed banning an antibiotic used to fatten up pigs for slaughter, saying the company that makes it hasn't proved it cannot cause cancer in people. The antibiotic, carbadox, is one of many used in farm animals. The federal government and consumer groups want farmers to stop using them to fatten animals because their heavy use is helping spread antibiotic-resistant superbugs. But that's not what worried FDA about carbadox. "Continued approval of carbadox could expose consumers to substances of carcinogenic concern," the FDA said in a statement. Read more

Nutrition guidelines for feeding breeding boars

To balance complete feed ingredients and prepare commercial products for breeding boars, it is important to begin with setting appropriate goals, in which case we can focus on the following issues:

1. Good development of muscles and bone structure 2. High quality and quantity of sperm production 3. Longevity and well-being

These goals will ensure boars remain active for a long time, good health, and profitable. Additives

and special nutrients may be added in complete feeds either as main ingredients or part of a premix product are presented as below, in order of significance, according to my personal experiences, but others might be equally important.

Organic selenium (for enhanced sperm virility and quantity).

Vitamin E (for enhanced sperm quality).

Zinc (for enhanced sperm quality).

Biotin (for enhanced feet health).

Vitamin C (to reduce stress).

Betaine (to reduce stress).

Chromium tripicolinate (for enhanced performance). Read more

Super-muscly pigs created by small genetic tweak

Scientists in China and South Korea are using genetic engineering to create super muscular pigs.

These ‘double-muscled’ pigs are made by disrupting, or editing, a single gene — a change that is much less dramatic than those made in conventional genetic modification, in which genes from one species are transplanted into another. As a result, their creators hope that regulators will take a lenient stance towards the pigs — and that the breed could be among the first genetically engineered animals to be approved for human consumption. Because gene editing is a relatively new phenomenon, countries have only just started to consider how to regulate it in agricultural plants and animals. There are some signs that

government agencies will view it more leniently than they do conventional forms of genetic modification. Consumers who like their meat lean now have the help of genetic engineering to grant their wish. Read more
