ISSUE STATUS AND AMENDMENT
i. This is a controlled copy of the Technical Schedule. Scheme members to which it has
been issued will be provided with details of any changes in accordance with the
amendment procedure below.
ii. From here on in, references to Exova (UK) Limited trading as Warrington Certification will be shown as Warrington Certification.
iii. Each page of the document is identified by a page number, issue number and date.
Where an amendment is made, the revised page will bear a new issue number and date
of amendment.
iv. Where an amendment requires an extra page to be inserted, this is numbered with the
number of the preceding page but with the addition of a letter suffix, e.g. 10A will be
inserted between pages 10 and 11 and 10B will follow 10A. The new pages are dated in
the normal way.
v. Any amendment to this document will be identified on the Amendment Page, which will
be re-issued to holders of controlled copies with the amended sections/pages. Revised
pages shall be inserted in place of existing pages or between existing pages and
superseded pages shall be discarded. Where a significant number of amendments are

TO FIRE RESISTING DOORSETS
FOREWORD
This Schedule forms part of a series of controlled documents, which comprise the
CERTIFIRE product certification scheme. It has been prepared in accordance with the
requirements of BS EN ISO/IEC 17065 for product certification bodies. In addition to this
Schedule the other controlled documents which form part of the Scheme are:
Rules for Certification, which include the maintenance of a quality system certificated to ISO 9001
CERTIFIRE Quality Manual
Certificate(s) of Approval in the CF 000 Series, together with any appendices
Agreement of Collaboration between the client, the Quality Management System (QMS) Certification Body and CERTIFIRE

Rules for the use of the CERTIFIRE logo
This document is intended for use with fire resisting doorsets and smoke control doorsets
of various types of construction. It has been prepared by the organisations listed in
Annex C and agreed in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO/IEC 17065. Its
technical provisions have been adopted as a common basis for certification of door
closing devices and accessories, when fitted to fire resisting doorsets with metallic and
non-metallic leaves.
The closing devices may be overhead face fixed, concealed, floor or jamb mounted.
This CERTIFIRE scheme aims to provide confidence that installed door closing devices,
when fitted to hinged or pivoted fire resisting doorsets, will be capable of contributing to
the performance of the doorset, without detriment to its fire resistance, for the designated
fire resistance period and also to demonstrate compliance with performance
specifications.

The detailed scope of a system appraisal is given in the Appendices associated with the
Certificate of Approval. These appendices will identify any limitations applying to the use
and interchange ability of the door closer.
Door closing devices can have a significant influence on the fire resistance of doorsets.
Such devices are intended to ensure that the door leaf is held closed in the event of a
fire, thus helping to maintain the fire resistance of the doorset. Additionally, when a door
incorporates a latch and other components, which resist closing, it is imperative that the
door closing device is able to overcome these resistances. This Technical Schedule (TS)
incorporates criteria to help ensure that the device will close a door leaf from any angle of
opening when correctly fitted with CERTIFIRE approved components.
In the case of an unlatched doorset the door closing device is essential to the door
performance since it is the sole means of keeping the door closed until other forms of
restraint take over. Only door closers that are able to act as essential closers shall be
approved by CERTIFIRE.
Concealed devices require removal of part of the door leaf, its core material and
frequently part of the door frame. This may reduce the integrity and insulation of the
doorset which can also be aggravated by the conductive nature of the metal from which
the door closer is made. For this reason the approval shall be related to door types and
performance periods as indicated by relevant code letters and numbers.
1 SCOPE
1.1 This Technical Schedule provides the CERTIFIRE procedures and practices for the
certification, via testing and appraisal, of door closing devices. These devices are
intended for use on fire resisting doorsets, including those for smoke leakage control,
regardless of whether a latch is fitted.
1.2 It is applicable to door closing devices (door closers) which may be on or in the door, on
or in the frame, or in the floor. This Schedule determines the appropriate fire and
mechanical test evidence having regard to the various applications in which the door
closer may be used, e.g., if the available test evidence indicates successful tests on
overhead door closers using projecting arm application only, it may not be appropriate to
install the closing device in parallel arm application.
1.3 Similarly, separate performance requirements are given for the following accessories for
single and double action doorsets:
a) Top centres b) Shoes and bottom straps c) Pivots d) Extension and removable spindles

1.4 Certification will apply to a door closer type or family based upon a given design and
using the same materials. When a company manufactures, or fabricates door closers
from significantly different working components and/or materials then a separate
Certificate may be required for each type of unit, as specified in EN 1154 and/or EN
1155. Each device is required to be given a six digit classification number, the fourth digit
being specifically related to the suitability of the device to be used on a fire resisting
doorset. This digit does not give the field of application for the device, which is provided
by the scope given in the CERTIFIRE certificate.
1.5 The detailed scope of a system appraisal is given in the Appendices associated with the
Certificate of Approval. These appendices will identify any limitations applying to the use
and interchangeability door closing devices. Approval is only applicable to door closers
when fitted to doorsets which are vertically hinged or pivoted with leaves constructed as
indicated below. It applies to single or multiple leaves of single or double action
configuration and applies separately to doorsets which incorporate glass panels including
uninsulating glass.
1.6 This schedule does not cover closing devices fitted to rolling shutter or sliding doorsets.
1.7 The following codes have been designated to the respective doorset types:
a) Code TT: 20 minute doorsets that consist of non-metallic leaves in timber frames that do not contain intumescent materials in the frame to leaf gap.
b) Code ITT: 20 minute to 120 minute doorsets containing intumescent seals and consisting of non-metallic faced and edged leaves hung in timber frames
c) Code ITM: 20 minute to 120 minute doorsets containing intumescent seals and consisting of non-metallic faced and edged leaves hung in metal frames.
d) Code ITC: 20 minute to 120 minute doorsets containing intumescent seals and consisting of non-metallic faced and edged leaves hung in proprietary composite frames, of which the principal material is other than timber or metal but which may include any other materials.
e) Code MM: 20 minute to 240 minute doorsets that consist of metallic leaves in metallic frames that do not contain intumescent materials in the frame to leaf gap.
f) Code IMM: 20 minute to 240 minute doorsets that consist of metallic leaves in metallic frames that contain intumescent materials in the frame to leaf gap.
g) Suffix G: 20 minute to 120 minute doorsets of any of the above constructions which include more than 20 % area of uninsulating glass have the appropriate code above with the suffix ‘G’. For example ‘ITTG’ and ‘ITMG’.

1.8 When any door closing device which incorporates electromagnetic hold-open facilities is
appraised to this TS, the approval does not include tests to validate the operating
effectiveness nor the electrical safety of these components beyond those contained in
EN 1155.

3. DEFINITIONS
Accessory:
Strap/shoe, top centre, intermediate pivot or extension spindle (together with their fixings)
used in conjunction with a floor spring mechanism.
*Adjustable Closing Force:
Inbuilt function that allows the closing moment of a door closer to be adjusted over a
range of power sizes.
*Backcheck:
Inbuilt buffer which helps to prevent a door leaf being flung wide open.
Centre hung accessories:
Accessories for use on a double-action door hung on pivots or a floor spring where the
pivot point is at any appropriate position on the centre line of the thickness of the door
leaf.
*Closing moment:
Torque in Nm generated by the door closing device which acts upon the door leaf during
the closing operation.
Concealed door closer:
Door closing device housed within the door leaf and/or the door frame. May be overhead
or jamb mounted.
*Concealed overhead door closer, door mounted:
Door closer, mounted within the thickness of the door.
*Controlled door closing device (door closer):
Any manually operated door closing mechanism where the energy for closing is
generated by the user upon opening the door, and when released, returns the door to the
closed position, in a controlled manner. The term includes all arms, brackets, shoes, top
centres, floor pivots and other parts supplied with the device and necessary for its
installation and operation.
*Delayed closing:
Inbuilt function that allows the door closing action to be delayed for an adjustable period
of time before resuming controlled closing.
*Door closer power size:
Measure of the closing moment exerted by a door closer.

*Door width:
Width of a door leaf including any rebated door edges.
**Double action:
An element which is hinged at or near one edge which can be moved through the closed
position in either direction in order to create an opening.
Double-action door assembly:
Assembly where the leaf is able to move away from the closed/rest position in either
direction (also known as double-swing).
*Double-action door closer:
Door closer which allows operation of a door in both directions
Double-action floor spring:
Floor spring mechanism for fitting to double-action assemblies by means of centre hung
accessories.
*Double doorset:
Assembly consisting of two hinged or pivoted leaves within a single frame. The meeting
stiles can be either plain or rebated.
*Efficiency:
Ratio of the opening force applied to the door by the user, and the force available for
closing the door, expressed as a percentage.
*Electrically powered free swing door closer:
Door closer that allows a door, after an initial opening to a
predetermined position, to swing freely anywhere from that position to its closed position
without any resistance or damping. Upon removal of the electrical supply, the door
returns to the closed position under the control of the door closer.
*Electrically powered hold-open:
Inbuilt function that allows a door fitted with a door closer to remain open at either a pre-
set or chosen angle until electrically released.
*Electrically powered hold-open door closer:
Door closer that incorporates an electrically powered hold-open

*Electrically powered separate hold-open device:
Device that allows a door, fitted with a separate door closer to remain open at either a
pre-set or chosen angle until electrically released.
*Floor concealed door closer floor spring:
Door closer mounted within the floor.
*Hold-open:
Inbuilt function that allows a door fitted with a door closer to remain open at either a
preset or chosen angle until manually released.
Housed accessory:
An accessory which is recessed or fitted into the leaf or the frame
Intermediate pivot:
An offset pivot fitted between the top and bottom pivots to provide additional stiffness to
the hanging stile.
**Latch:
A self-engaging fitting which secures a movable component in a closed position and
which can be released by hand.
Latched:
A leaf that is retained closed by means of a latchbolt during the duration of the required
heating period regardless of the direction of fire exposure.
*Latch control:
A speed control operable only during the last few degrees of door closing.
Offset hung accessories:
Accessories for use on a single-action door hung on pivots or a floor spring where the
pivot point is at any appropriate position on, or offset from, the opening face to the door.
*Opening moment:
The torque in Nm generated by the user which acts upon the door leaf during the opening
operation.
*Overhead concealed door

*Overhead concealed door closer, transom method:
A door closer mounted within the thickness of the transom.
*Overhead door closer, surface mounted:
A door closer mounted, at or near the door head, on the surface of the door or its transom.
Overpanel:
A panel above a door, without a transom, which is fitted between the jambs, the frame head
and the top of the leaf and of the same thickness and similar construction to the leaf
Removable extension spindle:
Separate components that fit between the pivot of the floor spring and the leaf strap or shoe
and may accommodate different fitting depths of floor spring casing.
Shoe:
An accessory which is surface mounted at the heel of the door, pierced to take the floor
spring spindle. The shoe may be single or double-sided.
**Single action:
The action of a casement or door leaf which only opens in one direction.
Single action doorset:
An assembly where the leaf is able to move away from the closed position in one direction.
(Also known as single swing).
*Single action door closer:
A door closer for use on doors which can be opened in one direction only and which close
against a fixed stop.
Single-action floor spring:
A floor spring mechanism for fitting to single-action assemblies by means of offset or single
action accessories.
*Speed control:
The adjustability of the closing speed of the door.
Strap:
A metal bar housed into the bottom of the door, pierced to take the floor spring spindle.

4 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 General
Certification in accordance with this Schedule is considered on the following basis:
a) Acceptance of the manufacturer’s quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001 certificated by a body accredited by a National Accreditation Body. In the UK that will be UKAS. In other States of the European Economic Area certification bodies shall be a signatory to the ‘European Cooperation for Accreditation (EA) Multilateral Agreement (MLA) for the relevant parts of ISO 9001. Certification bodies outside of Europe shall be a signatory to the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) Multilateral Agreement (MLA) for the relevant parts of ISO 9001.
b) The quality management system shall be supplemented by the factory production control (FPC) requirements of EN 1154 and EN1155.
c) Acceptable test evidence, as defined in this Technical Schedule.
d) Independent appraisal of products in a consistent manner.
e) Acceptance of installation instructions.
f) Clear and unambiguous labelling.
4.1.1 Only door closing devices conforming with the requirements of EN 1154 or EN 1155 shall
be considered for CERTIFIRE approval.
4.1.2 The results of tests conducted prior to application for CERTIFIRE approval may be used
at the discretion of CERTIFIRE. Historic data from such tests shall only be accepted if
originating from a Notified testing laboratory (as defined in the Construction Products
Directive) in accordance with the relevant Standards. Mechanical tests or fire tests
conducted more than 5 years prior to an application for certification shall not be used
unless suitable confirmatory test are made which demonstrate the continued applicability
of the data to the product being appraised. In addition the manufacture shall declare that
the product was manufactured under the same FPC regime as is current and declare an
identical Bill of Materials for the product manufactured then and currently.
4.2 General Fire Resistance Test Requirements
4.2.1 The submitted test evidence shall be sufficient to cover each application as determined
by appraisal in accordance with this Technical Schedule.

4.2.2 Submitted fire test evidence will be categorised as follows:
a) Primary evidence
b) Supplementary evidence
4.2.3 Primary fire test evidence shall be conducted at a Notified testing laboratory and may, at
CERTIFIRE’s discretion, be witnessed by CERTIFIRE. The test(s) shall be conducted
fully in accordance with EN 1634-1 and/or EN 1634-3 as appropriate.
4.2.4 Supplementary fire test evidence may be generated at other, non- accredited facilities.
In such circumstances, the test(s) shall be witnessed by CERTIFIRE and all calibration
records shall be available for inspection by CERTIFIRE.
4.2.5 Evidence of performance using a specimen in a reduced size furnace may be taken into
account as part of an appraisal when it can be demonstrated that the reduced scale test
models the conditions pertinent to the performance of the closing device in use.
Additionally, the test shall reproduce the mode of failure to be anticipated at full scale as
determined by CERTIFIRE.
4.2.6 For primary test evidence, the tested door leaf shall be unlatched and not less than 2040
mm high by 926 mm wide. It shall be appropriate to the category of doorset defined by
CERTIFIRE and as given in paragraphs 4.3 and 4.4.
4.2.7 Consideration shall be given to the doorset construction with which the door closer is to
be tested. The doorset(s) chosen shall be of a generic type which shall provide the
maximum field of application. Doorsets of novel or unusual construction may restrict the
scope of approval for the closer. If a CERTIFIRE approved doorset is used its
construction shall be covered by the relevant certification. If a non-CERTIFIRE approved
doorset is used its appropriateness shall be discussed with CERTIFIRE prior to
conducting tests.
4.2.8 Door leaves which are lined on both sides with an inorganic board or a rigid intumescent
sheet material not less than 2 mm thick, either as a facing or a sub-facing, may be used
but the certification may be restricted to this type of door leaf construction.
4.2.9 The door closer shall be adjusted to the correct strength commensurate with the leaf size
and mass but not less than power size 3 (as defined in EN 1154). The relationship
between the size and the power rating of the door closer tested may affect the application
of the result to other sizes of closer in the range and its appraisal against other doorset
types.

4.2.10 For the fire test, the door closer shall be fitted as it is intended to be used in practice. For intumescent protected applications, such as concealed overhead door closers and offset accessories, they shall always be provided with the relevant intumescent ‘kit’. This shall be considered essential intumescent protection in the context of the appraisal and shall be clearly indicated in the Certificate. The manufacturer's product data sheet shall also clearly describe the fitting methods of the intumescent kit. No additional intumescent protection shall be fitted to the tested doorset other than that supplied as standard with the doorset and/or door closer.
4.2.11 The duration limitation of the approval is indicated in the designation of the doorset and is
expressed in minutes e.g. 30, 60 etc. This shall be in the form of a suffix e.g. ITM(120) or
ITT(30) etc.
4.2.12 For closing devices that are approved for use in multiple applications the areas for which
CERTIFIRE approval applies shall be expressed by means of a matrix of the type shown
in Annex B.
4.2.13 Any variants in the strength of the closing device and any accessories that may be
supplied or are available to fit the closing device for which primary test evidence is not
available shall be the subject of further appraisal. If any doubt exists as to their
influence then separate tests may be needed before certification of the device is granted
or the certification may need to be made conditional or limited in its application as defined
in the Certificate of Approval.
4.2.14 Concealed overhead closing devices which have been shown as able to satisfy the test
when fitted to an assembly incorporating a flush overpanel of an identical construction,
without detriment to the fire performance, shall have their approval related to the
construction of the leaf and overpanel. The universal matrix shall indicate that the
concealed overhead closing device is suitable for use with an assembly incorporating a
flush overpanel as shown in the Annex B.
4.2.15 In all of the above test assemblies the door closer shall not be the cause of a loss of
integrity, either directly or indirectly, for the claimed period. Non-compliance with the
insulation criterion shall not be the cause of a failure to achieve certification. Any
additional accessories that are supplied or are available for use with a floor spring that is
the subject of the approval, shall be the subject of a separate appraisal process as
defined in this Schedule.
a) For maximum scope of approval the following principles shall be used to determine which configuration of closer shall be tested.
b) For unlimited surface fixed, double lever arm applications the closing device shall
be fitted to the fire exposed face of a single leaf doorset as leaf mounted body in Parallel arm with an outward opening door leaf.

c) For unlimited surface fixed, slide arm and channel applications the closing device shall be fitted to the fire exposed face of a single leaf doorset as transom mounted body with leaf mounted track or leaf mounted body with transom mounted track and both in outward opening configuration.
d) For concealed closer applications the closing device shall be fitted to a single leaf doorset as Leaf mounted body, concealed track or transom mounted body with concealed track.
e) For unlimited double action floor spring applications the closing device shall be fitted to a double action, double leaf doorset as closer body, in line with door leaf, mounted to Leaf A and closer body, 90° (towards the furnace) mounted to Leaf B with maximum spindle height.
f) For unlimited single action floor spring applications the closing device shall be fitted to the fire exposed side of a single action, double leaf doorset, with plain meeting stiles, as closer body, in line with door leaf, mounted to Leaf A and closer body, 90° (towards the furnace) mounted to Leaf B with maximum spindle height.
4.3 Type TT Fire Test Requirements
4.3.1 This clause provides the testing schedule and limitations relating to the approval of
closing devices for use with fire resisting doorsets consisting of non-metallic doors in
timber frames (TT).
4.3.2 Type TT doorsets are those designed for an FD20 performance which consist of non-
metallic leaves in timber frames of appropriate size and which do not contain intumescent
materials in the frame to leaf gap. Door leaves shall include all parts of timber or other
cellulosic material, e.g. flaxboard, chipboard with or without an internal rail and stile
system.
4.3.3 FD20 leaves shall be not more than 45 mm thick.
4.3.4 If the result of the test is to be valid for general (unlimited) certification the leaf shall be
not less than 2040 mm high by 926 mm wide and shall be of a type TT or TTG
construction not more than 45 mm thick hung in a softwood frame without a latch
engaged.
4.3.5 The gaps between the leaf and the frame at the head and jambs shall be at least 3 mm
wide.
4.3.6 No intumescent material is to be fitted in the leaf to frame gap, nor behind the lipping of
the door leaf in a concealed manner, other than any which may be incorporated with any
door closer provided for universal use.

4.3.7 For applications which are not appropriate for that given in the Appraisal Principles
section, including single-leaf configurations, the specific application may be tested and
the certificate shall be restricted to the tested application.
4.3.8 In the case of an offset strap or shoe the assembly shall be tested opening into the furnace and, for unlimited applications, shall be tested with the maximum offset for which approval is being sought. The successful approval of the maximum offset shall approve lesser offset dimensions.
4.4 Type ITT, ITM and ITC Fire Test Requirements
4.4.1 This clause provides the testing schedule and limitations relating to the approval of
closing devices for use with fire resisting doorsets consisting of intumescent sealed,
'timber' doors in timber/non-metallic frames (ITT), in metallic frames (ITM) or in
composite frames (ITC).
4.4.2 Doorsets are those designed for an FD30, FD60 or FD90 performance containing
intumescent seals in either the door or frame. Door leaves shall include all parts of
timber or other cellulosic material, e.g. flaxboard, chipboard with or without an internal rail
and stile system.
4.4.3 For type ITT doorsets the door frame shall be of timber and of an appropriate size for the
door leaf and either the leaf or the frame shall include intumescent seals which are
considered to be ‘standard’ for the period of fire resistance with respect to that doorset.
4.4.4 For type ITM doorsets the door frame shall be of metal.
4.4.5 For type ITC doorsets the door frame shall be of a size appropriate for the door leaf,
proprietary, and of a plastic, e.g. PVCu, or composite construction of which the principal
material is neither of timber based material nor metal.
4.4.6 If the result of the test is to be valid for general certification, the leaf shall be appropriate
to the rating, including its thickness; not less than 2040 mm high by 926 mm wide and
hung in a frame of a thickness commensurate with the rating and of the type for which
approval is required i.e., ITT, ITM or ITC. Any latch, if fitted, shall not be engaged.
4.4.7 The gaps between the leaf and frame at the head and jambs shall be at least 3 mm wide.
4.4.8 As the level of intumescent material within the leaf to frame interface can have an
influence on the restraint of the leaf, the use of intumescent material within the doorsets,
to retain the leaf, shall be appropriate to the doorset construction i.e. a ‘standard’
construction, and the amount of intumescent material shall not be increased to assist
retention of the leaf within the frame.

4.4.9 For applications which are not appropriate for those given in Tables 6 and 7, including
single leaf configurations, the specific application may be tested and the certificate shall
be restricted to the tested application.
4.4.10 In the case of an offset strap or shoe the assembly shall be tested opening into the furnace and, for unlimited applications, shall be tested with the maximum offset for which approval is being sought. The successful approval of the maximum offset shall approve lesser offset dimensions.
4.5 Type IMM Fire Test Requirements
4.5.1 This clause provides the testing schedule and limitations relating to the approval of
closing devices for use with fire resisting door assemblies consisting of uninsulated or
insulated metal door assemblies in metal frames with intumescent seals (IMM).
4.5.2 If the result of the test is to be valid for certification on any IMM door assembly, the leaf
shall not be less than 2040mm x 926mm and shall be of an 'uninsulated' construction.
The leaf shall be hung without a latch engaged and, if the closing device is face fixed,
shall be fitted in parallel arm application which is considered the weakest configuration.
The gaps between the leaf and frame at the head and jambs shall be at least 3 mm wide.
4.5.3 Where the closing device is not required to be approved in parallel arm application,
Figure 1 (projecting arm) application may be tested.
4.5.4 The intumescent seals incorporated within the door to frame interface do not require
limitations on the volume of high pressure forming intumescent materials that may be
incorporated.
4.5.5 Where the closing devices are to be used on only insulated (EI classification) IMM door
assemblies, the test may be conducted on this type of door assembly only. There is no
need to provide test evidence on uninsulating door assemblies as this is considered a
more onerous application. Additionally, where the closing device is asymmetrical, it need
only be tested on the side exposed to the furnace as the insulating nature of the door
assembly is considered advantageous to the performance of closing devices fitted to the
non-exposed face.
4.5.6 If, for convenience, the closing device is to be evaluated as part of a double leaf, single
acting assembly, two equal leaves shall be used each not less than 2040mm x 800mm.
Both leaves shall be retained closed by a closing device being appraised.

4.5.7 For general application, the closing device, in its operating application, shall have been
tested fitted to the fire exposed face of an unlatched metal door leaf with the door leaf
opening away from the furnace (parallel arm application) unless this application is not
used for the closer, in which case the certification shall be limited accordingly.
Additionally, a separate closer shall have been tested on the unexposed face of the
doorset. This evidence may be in the form of a separate test or in conjunction with the
evidence gathered for the fire exposed closer. The unexposed door closer may be fitted
without arms.
4.5.8 The closer is only appraised for the period of fire resistance up to that for which the door
assembly satisfied the integrity requirements of the fire test. There shall be no
extrapolation to longer periods of fire resistance.
4.5.9 In the case of an offset strap or shoe the assembly shall be tested opening into the
furnace and, for unlimited applications, shall be tested with the maximum offset for which
approval is being sought. The successful approval of the maximum offset shall approve
lesser offset dimensions.
Note: for approval on E classification doorsets, the closers body shall also be tested fixed
to the unexposed face of the fire test sample.
4.6 Type MM Fire Test Requirements
4.6.1 This clause provides the testing schedule and limitations relating to the approval of
closing devices for use with fire resisting doorsets consisting of uninsulated or insulated
metal door leaves in metal frames without intumescent seals (MM).
4.6.2 If the result of the test is to be valid for general (unlimited) certification the leaf shall be
not less than 2040mm high by 926mm wide and shall be of an uninsulated construction.
The leaf shall be hung without a latch engaged and, if the closing device is face fixed,
shall be fitted in parallel arm application which is considered the weakest configuration.
4.6.3 Where an overhead closing device is not required to be approved in parallel arm
application, a Figure 1 (projecting arm) application may be tested.
4..6.4 The door to frame interface shall not incorporate intumescent seals.
4.6.5 Where the closing device is to be used only on insulated MM or IMM door assemblies,
the test may be conducted on this type of door assembly only. There is no need to
provide test evidence on uninsulating door assemblies as this is considered a more
onerous application. The Certificate of Approval shall state the application(s) for which
the closer is approved.

4.6.6 If, for convenience, the closing device is to be evaluated as part of a double leaf, single
acting assembly, two equal leaves shall be used each not less than 2040mm high by
926mm wide. Both leaves shall be retained closed by the closing device being appraised.
The doorset shall not incorporate rebated meeting stiles nor include an astragal.
4.6.7 The closing device, in its operating application, shall have been tested fitted to the fire
exposed face of an unlatched metal door leaf with the door leaf opening away from the
furnace (parallel arm application) unless this application is not used for the closer, in
which case the certification shall be limited accordingly. Additionally, a separate closer
shall have been tested on the unexposed face of the doorset. This evidence may be in
the form of a separate test or in conjunction with the evidence gathered for the fire
exposed closer. The unexposed door closer may be fitted without arms.

4.7 Glazed Doorsets, Suffix G, Fire Resistance Test Requirements
4.7.1 Doorsets of TT, ITT, ITM or ITC construction which include an uninsulated glass panel of
a size in excess of 20% of the leaf area. The suffix ‘G’ is added to the door code.
4.7.2 In addition to the above requirements, for closers which
are intended to be used on doorsets which incorporate
more than 20% of uninsulated glass, the doorset on which
the closer is to be tested shall include such an aperture.
The aperture shall include any type of fire resisting
uninsulated glass appropriate to the door leaf and the
aperture shall be of the maximum anticipated size.
4.7.3 Where this is not known, the aperture shall be as shown on the attached sketch (2XGG Type with the lower panel glazed or solid).

4.7.4 Fire test evidence shall be provided with the closer fitted to the unexposed face of the
doorset. It is not necessary to provide test evidence of the closer fitted to the fire
exposed face of a glazed doorset i.e. the doorset may be unglazed for closers fitted to
the fire exposed face.
4.8 Alternative Accessories, Fire Test Requirements
Where appraisal of an alternative accessory is not possible in accordance with the
principles given in Section 5, a fire test shall be conducted as stated above in conjunction
with the relevant closer.
4.9 Mechanical Requirements
Initial Type Test (ITT) evidence for the door closer and its associated accessories shall
comply with EN 1154 and/or EN 1155 as appropriate. The test evidence shall be
generated at a laboratory accredited to EN17025 for the relevant tests. The test
laboratory shall also be a Notified testing laboratory under the Construction Products
Directive.
4.10 Audit Test Requirements
Audit testing shall be in accordance with Clause 9.3 of EN 1154 and/or EN 1155, as
appropriate, and shall be generated at a laboratory accredited to EN17025 for the
relevant tests by a national accreditation authority. The test laboratory shall also be a
Notified testing laboratory under the Construction Products Directive.
4.11 Sample Selection
Product samples for ITT (Mechanical and fire) and Audit tests shall be selected under the
control of CERTIFIRE.

4.12 Factory Production Control
4.12.1 For units which comply with EN 1154, in addition to the requirements for ISO
9000compliance and the requirements for FPC given in Clause 9.2 of EN 1154, the
following checks shall be made on the units during manufacture: Note that “unit” means
each and every manufactured device.
a) Check that the components meet the specifications. Care should be taken that components critical to effective closing of the door are identified and clear procedures put in place to carry out regular material sample tests on those components. This is particularly important for moulded, cast or heat treated components where any internal flaws or inclusions would not be found by visual examination alone.
b) Check the operation of the mechanism. This requires a visual check that all components are fitted. e.g. springs, circlips etc. and that any specified lubrication has been correctly applied.
Mount the door closer on a simple hinged door rig and adjust the regulators for
maximum closing time. Open the test door to around 90° and release. Verify that the
door is controlled in its movement and only moves slowly towards the closed position.
Readjust the closing speed regulator to around 5 seconds (from 90° open) and verify
the closing action.
Adjust any latch action control and verify its action over the last few degrees of door
closing.
NOTE: The above checks may be carried out without the use of a test door, by
appropriate movement of a suitable arm attached to the closer mechanism.
Check for any evidence of fluid leaks.
c) Check the marking in accordance with clause 4.11 of this schedule.
4.12.2 For units which comply with EN 1155, in addition to the requirements for ISO 9000

Check that all electrical connections are correct and secure, and that cables are secured against mechanical damage from any moving parts.
Check that any specified lubrication has been correctly applied.
For devices incorporated in, or with door closer, carry out the relevant checks of EN 1154 above, on the complete assembly.
Mount the hold-open device on a simple hinged door rig and apply rated voltage. Open the test door to around 90° and verify that the door is held. Reduce the applied voltage slowly and verify that the device releases before the voltage has reduced below 2.4 V.
Check for any evidence of fluid leaks.
c) Check the marking in accordance with clause 4.11 of this schedule.
4.12.3 For units that comply with EN 1154 and EN 1155, there shall be a documented procedure to ensure that CERTIFIRE (or their agent) is notified by the manufacturer in advance of any changes or redesigns to the product, including any changes to the manufacturing conditions, likely to affect the product performance. The objective being to ensure that the reference Initial Type Test remains valid for continuing production. Where significant changes are made, the ITT has to be repeated.
4.13 Labelling
4.13.1 The product shall be clearly marked with the CERTIFIRE name, optionally the logo and
with the certificate number. It is not essential for the marking to be on an external
surface but should be visible on the installed product on removal of a cover or cover
plate.
4.13.2 The packaging shall be marked to show that the product is CERTIFIRE approved by
means of mark (or logo), name and shall carry the certificate number.
4.13.3 The product shall be dispatched with a data sheet that gives the scope of the approval in the form of the Approval Matrix and shall explain clearly any special provisions needed for the product to provide its rating including instructions for fitting of any intumescent protection kits.

5. CERTIFICATE AND REGISTER
The scope of certification of all certified closing devices shall be contained in the
Certificate of Approval and associated documents and shall be entered in CERTIFIRE’s
“Register of Approved Products”. The Certificate shall indicate the acceptable
application(s) of the device, the acceptable doorset type, the fire resistance period and
the duty of use, as well as stating the maximum sizes of doorset for the different
configurations by an appropriate description or code or by means of the matrix given in
Annex B.
6. APPRAISAL PRINCIPLES
6.1 General
6.1.1 Only personnel appointed by CERTIFIRE as competent to conduct such work and as listed in the CERTIFIRE Competency Matrix are able to conduct the appraisal. Figure 1 shows the principles of approval and appraisal for CERTIFIRE applications.
6.1.2 The CERTIFIRE appraisal report shall determine the scope of acceptability of the closing devices in line with the following principles and using the available test evidence.
6.1.3 Direct application of the test evidence, via appraisal, to other closing devices within the same ‘family’, is permitted within the rules given in this clause. The closing device shall continue to satisfy the relevant parts of EN 1154 or EN 1155 as appropriate.

a) A parallel arm approves a standard or regular arm used in conjunction with a transom
mounted device.
b) A standard or regular arm does not approve a parallel arm or a transom mounted device.

6.3 Materials of the closer body
Unless otherwise stated below the construction of the closing devices shall be the same
as that tested. No change of materials is permitted. The application and the mode of
operation (e.g. single action or double action) shall not be changed. For concealed
closing devices, the body of the device may be reduced in size and the morticed recess
reduced pro-rata.
6.4 Materials of the closer arms
A test approves arms and linkages made with materials of a higher softening or melting
temperature regardless of shape. Arms or linkages with a lower softening temperature
shall not be approved.
6.5 Covers
Except for doorsets coded G, a test on an overhead face fixed closer fitted with a cover
that may provide some thermal protection approves covers with a higher softening or
melting temperature. Except for doorsets coded G, a test on a closer without a cover
approves the closer when fitted with any cover. For doorsets coded G, any cover shall be
non-combustible.
6.6 Appraisal of alternative accessories
Appraisal of alternative accessories is permissible without any further fire resistance test
evidence providing that the following aspects are considered not to be detrimental to the
fire performance of the doorset:

6.7 Function

6.8.1 A test on a TT doorset approves the closer* for use with a ITT doorset of similar
construction (up to 30 minutes).
6.8.2 A test on a glazed TT doorset, as described above, approves the closer* for use on other
TT doorsets of similar construction and for unglazed TT doorsets.
6.8.3 A test on a ITT(30) doorset approves the closer* for use on other ITT doorsets of similar
construction and for the same or higher fire resistance periods.
6.8.4 A test on a glazed doorset, as described above, for an ITT(30) doorset approves the
closer* for use on other ITT doorsets of similar construction, and for unglazed doorsets,
of the same fire resistance period.
6.8.5 A test on a glazed doorset, as described above, for an ITT(60) doorset approves the
closer* for use on other ITT doorsets of similar construction, and for unglazed doorsets,
of the same fire resistance period.
6.8.9 A test on a glazed doorset, as described above, for an ITT(120) doorset approves the
closer* for use on other ITT doorsets of similar construction, and for unglazed doorsets, of the same fire resistance period.
6.8.10 A test on an ITM doorset approves the closer for use on ITM doorsets of similar
construction and for similar or higher time periods. Note: May not apply to floor springs
and concealed closers. See relevant tables.
6.9 Door Type – Metallic leaves
6.9.1 A test on an uninsulated steel door assembly approves an insulated door assembly.
6.9.2 A test on a timber framed, glazed doorset does not approve an uninsulated non glazed or
partially glazed metallic door assembly.
6.9.3 A test on a steel door assembly without intumescent protection approves a steel door
assembly with intumescent protection.

ANNEX A
GUIDANCE NOTES
A1 Delayed action function
There are currently no regulatory limits as to the period of delay that can be tolerated
without seriously impairing the ability of the fire door to restrict the spread of fire.
CERTIFIRE recommends that the door should not be held open for a duration in excess
of 25 seconds when closing from 120° to the end of the delay zone.
A2 Size to power ratio
Closing devices normally come in a range of strengths up to power size 7. If the full
range is to be approved the width of the tested leaf should be at least 70% of the
maximum recommended for the size of closing device tested.
A3 Protection by sub-facings
Certain inorganic boards have either a high latent heat plateau or are ablative in their
high temperature behaviour. These boards are able to provide more protection to
building hardware than purely insulating boards and the assessor shall ensure that the
behaviour of a core used in a test did not produce an artificially high level of protection.
A4 Intumescent protection to concealed devices
Additional protection may be applied to a concealed closing device, either by means of
an intumescent material or other insulating product in two distinctly separate ways:
a) A closer body that requires the removal of excessive leaf material to accommodate it may be tested with compensatory protection applied either to the mortice or directly to the face of the component.
b) A slide arm or connecting plate which extends across the face of the leaf or the frame reveal to such an extent that it could compromise the ability to satisfy integrity for the required period, may require additional intumescent material to be incorporated in the gap adjacent to the component.
A5 Protection of floor springs
This TS assumes that the floor spring mounting box is bedded in concrete of normal
density flush with the floor at the time of testing. If the closer is mounted in any other
form of construction then the appraiser shall establish the influence that this may have
had on the result obtained before recommending certifying the product. Certification of
the closer is based upon the closer being mounted in concrete or being protected from
below and on all sides by a material with an equivalent or better level of insulation than a
50 mm thick layer of normal concrete. Certification does not cover the use of the closer
when insulated with less protection.

A6 Reaction of intumescent seals
A timber door, in a timber frame section, remains fairly inert during test. Both the leaf and
the frame shrinking slightly when heated to the high temperatures that precede physical
charring. The incorporation of intumescent seals means that between 12 minutes, the
normal start of the swelling associated with intumescent seals, and the time at which
aluminium bodied overhead closers start to fail, a timber leaf in a timber frame is retained
shut by a combination of the closing force provided by the closer and grip resulting from
the expansion of a pressure forming intumescent seal.

When a timber leaf, with intumescent strips applied to its perimeter, is hung in a metal
frame there are two significant influences, one thermal and the other physical. In terms
of the thermal considerations the increased thermal inertia of the metal frame, which
takes longer to heat up and hence keeps the temperature in the leaf to frame gap lower
for longer, means that regardless of the nature of the intumescent, the contribution made
by the intumescent during the early stages of a fire test in keeping the door closed, is less
than that normally expected in all timber assemblies. Later on in the test the increased
thermal conductivity causes an early exhaustion of the intumescent action. In
mechanical terms the frame continues to expand throughout the test while the leaf
shrinks, thus the gap between the leaf and frame increases significantly throughout the
test, reducing the effectiveness of the seal and placing a greater emphasis on the closer
keeping the door closed.
A8 Timber leaf with composite frame
Composite frames are designated as those of which the principal material is other than
timber, timber based or metal, e.g. PVCu and which are proprietary. It is therefore not
possible to give a wide scope of approval for these types of door frames and approval will
be restricted to the types for which acceptable test evidence is available and other types
which are closely related.
