GSC/VSC 13 SEER models are available in 1 1/2 through 5ton sizes. They are designed for 208/230 volt single phaseapplications. Select GSC 3 phase models are available in230V and/or 460V.The condenser air is pulled through the condenser coil by adirect drive propeller fan. This condenser air is then dis-charged out of the top of the cabinet.These units are designed for free air discharge, so no addi-tional resistance like duct work shall be attached.The suction and liquid line connections on present modelsare of the sweat type for field piping with refrigerant type cop-per. Back seating valves are factory installed to accept thefield run copper. The total refrigerant charge for a normal in-stallation is factory installed in the condensing unit. GSC/VSC units are charged for the matching evaporator coil and a15 foot refrigerant line set.Systems should be properly sized by heat gain and losscalculations made according to methods of the Air Condi-tioning Contractors Association (ACCA) or equivalent. It isthe contractors responsibility to ensure the system has ad-equate capacity to heat or cool the conditioned space.Some GSC/VSC condensing units use a mix of CopelandReciprocating and Copeland Compliant Scroll compressors.There are a number of design characteristics which are differ-ent from the scroll compared to the traditional reciprocatingcompressor.Due to their design Scroll compressors are inherently moretolerant of liquid refrigerant.NOTE: Even though the compressor section of a Scroll com-pressor is more tolerant of liquid refrigerant, continued flood-back or flooded start conditions may wash oil from the bear-ing surfaces causing premature bearing failure.Copeland Compliant Scroll compressors use white oil whichis compatible with 3GS. 3GS oil may be used if additional oilis required.The GSC/VSC condensers use new generation scroll com-pressors, except for the VSC130181A*/B* and GSC130181C*which use a rotary compressor. The scroll compressors havean internal equalization mechanism and an anti-counter rota-tion device which allow the scrolls to equalize in approxi-mately second at shut down.Operating pressures, amp draws and minimum circuit am-pacity may differ from standard reciprocating compressors.This information may be found in the "Cooling PerformanceData" section and should be reviewed prior to installation ofthe condenser.GSC130361DF use Bristol BENCHMARK compressors,the most advanced compressors in the industry today. TheBENCHMARK reciprocating compressor can be recognizedby a J in the fourth character of the compressor model num-ber. Innovative mechanical design and gas management makethe BENCHMARK compressor very efficient and remark-ably quiet. The sound content (frequency) delivers excep-tional acoustical characteristics and the virtually round hous-ing design is compact and also helps to reduce the overallsound and vibration.

Minimum Airflow Clearances
Special consideration must be given to location of the con-densing unit(s) in regard to structures, obstructions, otherunits, and any/all other factors that may interfere with aircirculation. Where possible, the top of the unit should becompletely unobstructed; however, if vertical conditions re-quire placement beneath an obstruction there should be aminimum of 60 inches between the top of the unit andthe obstruction(s). The specified dimensions meet require-ments for air circulation only. Consult all appropriate regula-tory codes prior to determining final clearances.Another important consideration in selecting a location forthe unit(s) is the angle to obstructions. Either side adjacentthe valves can be placed toward the structure provided theside away from the structure maintains minimum service clear-ance. Corner installations are strongly discouraged.DO NOT locate the unit: Directly under a vent termination for a gas appliance. Within 3 feet of a clothes dryer vent. Where the refreezing of defrost water would create a
hazard. Where water may rise into the unit.
