To identify and analyze the use of figurative language and

poetic devices found in popular music. Given the opportunityto pick their own contemporary songs, students will be able to:

    1) Use MovieMaker to create and find images that go

along with the song2) Play the music in the background as the project is being

    presented on MovieMaker

    3) Find and incorporate figurative language devices found

in the songs and display these on MovieMaker4) Understand that songs are a form of poetry.

    Essential Question:

    eq.txt

In what ways can technology be used to teach poetry?

    Scaffolding Questions:

    scaffolding

Will students be able to see the connection between song lyrics

    and poetry?

What are the figurative language devices found in poetry/song

lyrics i.e. simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, tone, and symbolism?

Unit Summary and Sequence of Events, Timelinesgive details:

After students have learned figurative language devices, they will pick a song of their

choice (school appropriate) and bring in a hard copy of the lyrics as well as have it saved

to a flash drive as an MP3. They will go to the computer lab and open the web 2.0 tool

MovieMaker and will begin to piece together their poetry project. They will be gatheringimages from the internet that go along with their piece of music (thinking about tone,

theme, imagery etc.) They will download their chosen piece of music to MovieMaker

and have it playing in the background when presenting the project. Students will also add

slides and label some of the figurative language devices found in their songs. As a finalproduct, when the video plays, students will have incorporated their music, images and

figurative language devices to demonstrate their knowledge of how music lyrics are a

    type of poetry.

Day 1we will review Figurative language devices and poetic devices.Day 2I will present a power point to students on how they will be using MovieMakerto demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the parts of a poem through the use

of song lyrics. Students will take notes on the steps to this project. Students will be

assigned to bring in a hard copy and MP3 of the song they have chosen for this project.

    TPE 4Making Content Accessible

Incorporate specific strategies, teaching/instructional activities, procedures andexperiences that address state-adopted academic content standards for students inorder to provide a balanced and comprehensive curriculum.

Vary instructional strategies according to purpose and lesson content. To meetstudent academic learning needs, candidates explain content clearly and reinforce

content in multiple ways, such as the use of written and oral

presentation, manipulatives, physical models, visual and performing arts,

diagrams, non-verbal communication, and computer technology.

    Encourage student creativity and imagination.

Motivate students & encourage student effort.

Take additional steps to foster access and comprehension for all learners whenstudents do not understand content.

    TPE 5- Student Engagement

Clearly communicate instructional objectives to students.

TPE 6BDevelopmentally Appropriate Teaching Practices in Grades 4-8

Design learning activities to extend students concrete thinking and foster abstractreasoning & problem-solving skills.
