Cornwall is the most southern county in England. It is situated on the south-west coast at the point where the Celtic Sea meets the English Channel. Many people believe that the legendary King Arthur was born and lived in Tintagel Castle on the north coast of Cornwall.

The coast and countyside of Corwall have inspired many poets, writers and

artists including Daphne du Maurier, Athur Conan Doyle and J.K. Rowling.

Corwal is famous for its water sports, too. Surfing and sailing are part of daily life for many people in Cornwall. In fact, in 2007, 300 surfers at Polzeath beach set a new world record for the highest number of surfers riding the same wave!

In this edition of Let’s Start we explore the magical county of Cornwall.

Almost 50 years ago, this zoo opened its doors to the general public. Let’s discover more about Twycross Zoo.

Pets for life atTwycross Zoo

twelve

Molly Badham and Natalie Evans founded

the Twycross Zoo in the summer of 1963.

They were both owners of pet shops in

the area, but they decided to open a zoo

together to raise awareness about rare and

endangered animals. Now the zoo is one

of the most important zoos in the United

Kingdom and next summer it will celebrate

its 50th birthday!

Twycross Zoo is home to around 1000

different animals. Perhaps the most

important of all are the primates; there are

40 different species of primates here and the

zoo has become the most important primate

centre in the western world. In February

2012, a very rare primate was born at the

zoo. The new arrival was a Francois Langur

which is an endangered species!

Twycross is not only a primate centre.

You can see many other species of animals

there too: giraffes, elephants, meercats,

wallabies, ostriches and lions. There are also

lots of scary animals including taratulas, boa

constrictors and even a few Madagascan

hissing cockroaches!

On 24th and 25th November Twycross Zoo

will hold two very special activity days called

“Pets for Life” days. You can learn all about

how to care for different types of pets, from

rodents to reptiles! Anyone can attend the

sessions to learn more about how animals

are cared for at the zoo and how to take

care of pets at home.

Guy Fawkes’ NightRemember, remember the 5th of November… It’s winter and it’s time to light the bonfire and celebrate Guy Fawkes’ night!

[[[[[[

On 5th November every year in

England we celebrate Guy Fawkes’

night. It is a historical celebration of

when, in 1605, a group of people

planned to kill King James. The

group’s leader was a man named

Guy Fawkes and the king’s men

caught him planning an explosion

under the Houses of Parliament in

London.

Now, every winter, we put on

our warmest coats and hats and

we go out into the streets for a

celebration. There is usually a fire,

where we roast potatoes, sausages

and chestnuts, a firework display

and lots of games and activities for

both children and adults.
