introduction to past simple.

CosplayIt’s a Japanese trend which has become famous all over the world. People drees up like their favourite comic book characters.

The word Cosplay derives from the two

English words costume and play. Cosplay

involves dressing up, wearing make-up and

even moving like your favourite comic book hero.

The trend is Japanese, so people often dress up

like characters from Manga comics, but they

can also dress as characters from video

games of music groups.

True or False?

[[[

There are a lot of festivals for fans of

Cosplay and there are prizes for the best

costumes. At the festivals, the Cosplay

fans tell stories from their comics, they sing

and dance. Some of the most important

Cosplay festivals are Cure Cosplay Festival,

which is held in April in Japan, and

Comiket, which is held twice

a year in Tokyo.

The Festivals

Cosplay began at the end of the seventies,

with the first comic book fair. Some people

attended the fair dressed as their favourite

characters. A lot of people liked the idea and,

in very little time, the costumes became

more elaborate. Cosplay fans don’t just

dress like their favourite characters,

but they talk and move like them too!

The beginnings

In the area of Harajuku, in Tokyo,

Cosplay fans dress up in their costumes and meet on a Sunday morning. They are a real tourist

attraction! In Japan, and also in Mexico and in Canada, there

are many Cosplay bars.

The City ofBath

Bath is a city in Somerset, in the south west of England. It is a Roman city and it was founded in 43AD!

The city of Bath is particularly famous for its Roman

temple and bath houses. The Romans built these

buildings around the natural sources of hot spring

water which can be found in the city. In the past

the bath house was rather like a modern-day leisure

centre. There were big buildings with swimming

pools, changing rooms and toilets. There were also

hot and cold rooms, similar to saunas and steam

rooms. Now the bath house is a very famous museum,

which you can visit to learn more about the Romans

and how they spent their free time.

It’s that time of year again: time to express your love for the person that you care about! It’s 14th February and it’s Valentine’s Day!

What happens on Valentine’s Day?In the past we sent love

letters and notes anonymously

(without saying who wrote

the letter) and the person

who received the letters had

to guess where they had come

from. Nowadays we usually

sign our name to make it clear

who sent the letter or card.

Valentine’s Day!

Who is Saint Valentine?Valentine was a Christian who

gave his life in honour of love.

We believe that he was killed

by Emperor Claudius in 269

A.D. because he performed

marriages for Roman soldiers.

He is remembered on 14th

February every year when we

celebrate the festival of love.

What happens on Valentine’s Day?

Symbols of loveRed roses, hearts, and

lovebirds are all typical

symbols of the festival of love.

But probably the most famous

and the most popular of all is

Cupid. Cupid is a little angel

who, in Roman mythology,

is believed to be the son of

Venus, the goddess of love.

Valentine’s Day around the world

England: in the past we believed that the man that a girl saw on the morning of Valentine’s Day would be her future husband.

Wales: in Wales people make spoons from wood which have beautiful and often complicated designs on them. They are called love spoons and they are given as gifts to loved-ones.

Japan: in Japan women traditionally give chocolates to men on Valentine’s Day, but men are expected to give women something more valuable, like clothing or jewellery.

Finland: in Finland Valentine’s Day is called ‘Friends’ Day’ and it is more popular to celebrate friendships rather than just remember your loved-ones.

Canada: in Canada, children often make Valentines messages and cards for friends. They are all collected in a box in their class at school and then distributed amongst the class so that every child receives a message of love and friendship.

South Africa: in some parts of South Africa people follow an old Roman tradition called ‘Lupercalia’. According to this tradition young girls wear the name of their lover on their sleeve.

William Shakespeare’s most famous play is about

two young lovers called… Find 11 words in the box

about Valentine’s Day and the unused letters will
