Team Purpose WaterAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation. Our mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene, and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities.

The Communication and Campaigns Team in WaterAid West Africa brings together thought leadership, political judgement, compelling arguments, and collaboration with other to influence policy and practice change by government and other key organisations, to secure and protect the right of poor people to safe, affordable water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Purpose of RoleThe purpose of the position of WA Sierra Leone Communications and Campaigns Manager is to lead on the communications and campaigns component of the Country Program Strategy. The role is strengthening and promoting WA Sierra Leone profile through all forms of media and electronic outlets and platforms. It leads on advocacy and brand-awareness campaigns in-country and contributes to global campaigns.

Responsibilities

COMMUNICATION & MEDIA OUTREACH 60%

• Build and maintain close working relationships with all of WA media and journalist as well as broadcasters to showcase WA’s works.

• Create and maintain WASL on priority social media channels (eg Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google+) to enhance brand awareness and to develop relationships with existing and potential supporters.

• Develop and produce WaterAid Sierra Leone’s contents in a variety of formats including print and digital.

• Provide leadership in completing simple documents and publications as required for both local and international consumption internally and externally.

• Work with CP staff to contribute to the WASL and Global Newsletters and other publications showcasing our work.

• Provide communications service to other WaterAid SL departments, overseeing copy editing, design and print of documents for CP use.

• Develop and facilitate contents to contribute to and build communications skills and capacities in other teams across the CP and partners.

• Help to coordinate communications activities and contents across the CP; developing Terms of References for engagements of outsourced communications consultants and managing them to deliver quality work in line with consultancy requirements.

• Directly responsible for maintaining WaterAid’s case studies and photo library; work with information technology colleagues to evolve improved approaches for managing photo and digital communications materials.

• Act as the in-house brand specialist ensuring all WaterAid branding requirements are complied with by all staff.

• Work with colleagues to plan, write and deliver media work around WaterAid Program service delivery and campaigns, fundraising initiatives, and other key organizational moments in supporting our advocacy works.

• Work with the Communications Department at HQ to develop and implement various campaigns on communications and media materials.

• Build and maintain close working relationships with all of WA media and advocacy partners, and journalist as well as broadcasters to showcase WA’s works.

CAMPAIGNS 40% • Contextualize and lead impactful campaigns for positive changes for WASL CP

with support/collaboration with Global Campaigns. • Formulate local campaigns strategies based on the global campaigns and

advocacy strategies in close collaboration with the Senior Policy & Advocacy Manager

• Contribute to content for CP strategy development and delivery, provide content and support for the global campaign’s activities. 

• Ensure collaboration with Line Ministries, stakeholders, and donors to share key campaign strategies, and form part of national coalitions.

• Work with Senior Policy & Advocacy Manager in the development and implementation of campaign popular mobilisation plans.

• Create various platforms to track and support the development and implementation of campaign strategies that will engage the public to influence government and other institutional policies and practices to achieve positive and lasting changes.

• collaborate with communities, community-based organisations, and civil society organisations in rural SL as part of campaigns rollout.

Other Responsibilities

Undertake other responsibilities, tasks or activities assigned by the Country Director in liaison with other departments.

Manage the performance and development of staff to create and maintain an effective, motivated, and high performing organization.

Commitment to WaterAid’s values and a working style that reflects these. Excellent communication, facilitation, presentation, representation, influencing

and interpersonal skills. Excellent oral, written, and editorial skills, with the ability to write tailored,

effective content for specific audiences. Good IT skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power-point, and Outlook. Proven ability to think creatively and so generate a wide range of

communications materials & media coverage. Knowledge of a range of measuring and analytics tools, and the ability to

apply metrics to media & social media activity. Self-motivated person able to work without close supervision. Effectively promote the WaterAid’s mission values, and objectives. Proven skills in leadership and team management, negotiation, liaison, and

relationship and conflict management. Adaptable, flexible, able to take initiative and prioritize among competing

demands. Creative writing skills - introducing innovations. An interest in International Development Willing to travel at short notice nationally and internationally.

Person Specification

Essential Desirable

• Degree in relevant discipline, preferably a master’s degree or higher in communications, social sciences, and development

• Excellent oral, written, and editorial

skills, with the ability to write tailored, effective content for specific audiences.

A communications or social sciences related degree

Experience of active participation and lobbying in the context of international conferences
