IntroductionWelcome to the follow on event from the Teaching and Learning Conference held in August

2012.

This training day will expand and further explore the themes introduced at the conference. The

day will start with a session on motivating students facilitated by our guest speaker Morag Kerr

and followed by four main workshops delivered throughout the day:

• Engage and Empower – practical strategies to promote independent learning

• E Learning – Actions speak louder than words

• The new CIF and you

• What is my data telling me?

The post 16 education and training sector is facing significant change and it is important that

we prepare ourselves for the demands of the evolving sector. Training events such as this are

part of that preparation and response.

Thank you for attending and we hope you enjoy the day.

Speaker Profile - Morag KerrAs a skilled and experienced presenter,

Morag’s expertise was initially developed

in education where she taught in Primary,

Secondary and Further Education and

delivered staff development in all of these

sectors. Most recently she worked in

collaboration with Alan McLean, author

of The Motivated School and Motivating

Every Learner, to transform his motivation

framework into The Motivated College – a

successful, practical training programme

delivered, on behalf of Scotland’s Colleges,

to staff and students in Further Education

Colleges across Scotland.

Morag is also skilled in delivering personal

development courses focused on building

confidence and improving communication

skills.

A life-long learner herself, she is convinced

that, by continuing to open up to new

experiences and maintaining an active

approach to life, we can improve our mental

and physical well-being. To prove this point

her personal philosophy is ‘each year to do

something I have never done before’. A

recent example of this is was an exhilarating

dog-sledding trip in Sweden where she

learned to manage her own team of four

huskies.

Her training focuses on enjoyable, interactive,

learning approaches which enable clear

communication and explore creative

techniques that aid confident. effective and

successful presentation. She has provided

training to people in education, business and

the arts.

Whole Group Session - Motivating Students‘Motivation is fundamental to many aspects of our lives. It is complex and pervasive in its scope and underpins how we understand and treat each other.

Motivation is more important than ability in determining our achievements. Achievement in

any aspect of life is determined by our mental attitude, i.e. our motivation. An understanding of

motivation, in particular the core conditions for optimal performance, provides an essential and

unifying focus for anyone interested in teaching and learning or personal and organisational

development.’

Workshop C The new CIF and youKnow your CiF

The grade for overall effectiveness is often

strongly linked to the quality of teaching,

learning and assessment. In the revised

inspection framework, during an inspection,

inspectors concentrate on capturing the

effectiveness of the learning process mostly

through direct observations and engaging

with learners. This workshop will explore

what is different in the new framework

and consider what underpins outstanding

teaching, learning and assessment

Workshop D Engage and Empower – practical strategies to promote independent learning

This interactive workshop will offer a range of

strategies for quickly engaging learners and

involve them in their learning. The activities

on offer are drawn from Co-operative

Learning and Assessment for Learning

and will provide ideas on how to evidence

learning and scaffold the learning experience

to foster independent learning.

During the workshop staff will work in small

groups and have the opportunity to take part

in 5 activities and reflect on how they could

implement them in their practice.

Support during the workshop will be

provided by the College Learning and

Teaching Coaches.

Workshop A What is my data telling me?The Principal will give a brief analysis of

the main findings from the SAR for each

Centre with a focus on the key findings and

implications for 2012/13.

This will be followed by a practical session

building on the key messages from

the previous SAR, a look at the current

performance data using the college

Data Dashboard system through Centre,

Programme Area, Course and Individual

student.

The aim of the session is to familiarise

teaching staff with the tools and information

available to them.

Workshop B Actions speak louder than words…E-Learning is at its most powerful when

learners are fully engaged and immersed

in active learning – actions speak louder

than words. During this session we will be

exploring:

• How eLearning can be used in a blended approach to deliver active learning

1. How the VLE can support you in managing your teaching and learning

2. How the VLE can support your learners in managing their own independent learning

During this session you will gain hands-on

experience by completing a piece of active

eLearning. Following the session, you will be

given the opportunity online to evaluate your

experience and to discuss with the eLearning

Development Team your thoughts and ideas

in response to information and activities

presented.
