TEACHER INTERN PROGRAM DESIGN

The Teacher Intern Program focuses on a way of thinking about teaching that includesplanning and preparation, classroom management, instruction, and professionalresponsibilities.Withafoundationinliberalarts,teachercandidatesengageinstudiesandexperiencesabouteducational theory, research,collaboration, reflectionandprofessionaldevelopment.Currenttrends,bestpractices,andperformanceassessmentareinherentinthe program design, with outcomes that satisfy national, state, and local standards ofexcellence. Academic standards of basic education, program licensure standards,performance standards, and the code of professional conduct are also embedded in theTeacherInternProgramthroughastudyoftheregulations,ofeducationalresearch,andofprofessionalpractice.TEACHER INTERN PROGRAM LEARNING GOALS Inkeepingwith themissionandprofessional frameworksof theSusquehannaUniversityDepartmentofEducationand thecertificationstandardsestablishedby thePennsylvaniaDepartmentofEducation,TeacherInternProgramcandidateswill:

• Applycontentknowledge,decision-makingskills,andsoundjudgmentsinherentinthelearningandteachingprocess.

• Develop skills and techniques to both communicate in various contexts and tocollaboratewitheducationalpartners.

• Exhibit the professional ethics, teaching competencies, and personal behaviors

Program Description In an effort to attract teaching talent in individuals not presently certified to teach, thePennsylvania Department of Education established the Pennsylvania Teacher InternProgram. Criteria for Admission The Teacher Intern Program has defined criteria for admission that assess candidates’potential for teaching through theexaminationof skills,academicpreparation,qualifyingworkexperience,andtheabilitytoflourishinateachingsituation.

• TeacherInternProgramcandidatesmustholdaminimumofabaccalaureatedegreefrom an approved college/university, and must satisfy the requirements for theacademicmajorinwhichtheywanttocertifyasdescribedunderthatdepartmentinthecurrentSusquehannaUniversitycatalog.

• CandidatesenteringaTeacher InternProgrammusthavecompleted theirhighestdegree with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Candidateswith a lower GPA can beconditionally accepted and demonstrate their competence by completing 12semesterhoursofcourseworkwithaGPAof3.0orhigher.

In addition to the course requirements listed below, candidates for the Teacher InternProgrammay have to complete additional coursework to qualify for the program or tosatisfy state requirements for certification in a specific subject area. Field Experiences and Student Teaching

FieldExperience

Field experiences (ClassroomObservations) are an important component of theTeacherIntern Program. These experiences allow candidates to apply principles and theorieslearned in their academic coursework to actual practice in the classroom setting. Fieldexperiencesalsoprovideopportunitiesforinteractionswithdiversepopulations,ages,andschoolsettings.

ThePennsylvaniaDepartment of Education requires field experience totaling190hours,priortostudentteaching.These190hoursinclude40hoursofobservationandexploration(externship–singleschoolsetting)and150hoursofpre-studentteachinginteractionwithteachers and students. Some of the 150 hours will take place throughout the requiredcoursework,andwillalignand integratewith the topicsof focus in thecoursematerials,andprogramgoals.

Considerationforfieldexperiencecreditwillbegiventorecentexperienceinworkingwithchildren in an instructional setting, but will still be required in a variety of courses.CandidateswilldiscussrecentexperienceswiththeDirectoroftheTeacherInternProgramduringthepersonalinterviewportionoftheprogramintakeprocess.

StudentTeachingStudentteachingrequiresaminimumof12weeksandisworth12credits.Thesearefull-timeassignments andare arranged through theDirectorof theTeacher InternProgram.School sites for student teaching are planned early in the semester prior to the studentteachingexperience.Additionaltimemaybeaddedtothebeginningorendofthe12-weekassignmentinordertomeettherequiredfieldexperiencehours.Schoolsitesforstudentteachingareselectedfromschooldistrictswithina50-mileradiusof Susquehanna University. The university’s teacher intern supervisors will observe theinterns a minimum of four times during the student teaching experience, and internstudent teacherswill attend aminimumof four seminars on theuniversity campus. Thedevelopmentofaprofessionalportfolioisaprogramexitrequirement.Priortostudentteaching,candidatesmusthaveatuberculosisscreeningandmustsecurecurrentclearancesandMandatedReporterTraining.Candidates must achieve satisfactory ratings (from a university supervisor) on theassessmentsoftheirstudentteachingexperience.Theareasassessedincludeplanningandpreparation,instruction,theclassroomenvironment,andprofessionalism.

Upon successfully completing all program requirements with a GPA of 3.0 or higher,teacherinternsareeligibletoapplyforanInstructionalITeachingCertificatethroughthePennsylvaniaDepartmentofEducation.Apply to the Teacher Intern Program Toapply,submit:

1. Proof of American citizenship (copy of birth certificate or passport), or submit acopyofvalidvisawithacopyofDeclarationofIntenttobecomeaU.S.citizen.

2. Official transcript(s) from former postsecondary institution(s). As part of theapplication process, the candidate’s prior college/university transcripts will bereviewed to identify what courses are transferable and if additional courseworkand/or professional experiencesmay be required tomeet program guidelines forthecandidate’scontentandpedagogicalknowledge.

Applicants must also complete a personal interview with the Teacher Intern ProgramDirector. Admission will be determined upon review and assessment of all applicationmaterials. Registration Information When registering for any course, always indicate that you are enrolled in the TeacherInternProgramtoreceivetheinterntuitionrate.IdentifythedirectoroftheTeacherInternProgramasyouradvisor.First-timeregistrationrequirescompletingaformfortheOfficeof the Registrar. The Dir. of Teacher Interns can email you this form. Except for the“methodsblock”courses(8-16credits)andstudent teaching(12credits), candidatesmaymeet theabove requirements through transferof similar courseworkpreviously earnedfrom other accredited colleges/universities and approved by Susquehanna University.Approved teacher intern candidates who wish to complete some requirements at othercollegesmust secure approval from the director of the Teacher Intern Programprior toenrolling in “outside” courses. All teacher intern candidates will already hold abaccalaureatedegree.Mostwillhavecompletedamajorinanacademicfieldrelatingtotheteaching certification area they are seeking. For those who need additional courses tocomplete an approved major, the additional course work must meet SusquehannaUniversity’srequirementsfortheintendedmajororthePraxistestsmustbepassedearlytosubstituteforthiscoursework.TeacherInternsmayenrollindayclasses;however,theymaynot“displace”undergraduatestudentsfromavailableseats.Ifundergraduateenrollmentsfillaclasstocapacity,theclasswillnotbeavailabletoteacherinterns.

Program Acceptance Letter

Uponacceptance into theTeacher InternProgram, thecandidateswill receiveaProgramAcceptance Letter which will specify the courses and requirements needed forPennsylvaniaTeacherCertification–InstructionalIcertificate.Teacher Intern Certificate If you have passed the Praxis and have maintained a 3.0 GPA, the Intern Certificationbecomesanoption.IfyoubecomeawareofateachingpositionthatyouwouldliketoapplyforduringthecourseofyourTeacherInternProgram–anInternCertificatefromthePADepartmentofEducationcanqualifyyouforthispositionwhileyouearncreditstowardsyourInstructionalIcertification.Ifthisneedarises,pleasecontacttheprogramdirectorforLetterofInternCandidacythatcanaccompanyyourjobapplication.YoucanapplyonlineforthePAInternCertificatethroughtheTIMSsystem.ThisPAInternCertificateisvalidforthreeyearsandcosts$200.Fees Allteacherinterncourseworkwillbechargedattheteacherinternrateof$495percredithour(asof2018-19).Tuitioncostsaresubjecttochangeaccordingtouniversityincreases.Tuition costs for Teacher Intern Program courseswill be published in the SusquehannaUniversityBulletin,availableattheOfficeoftheRegistrar.
