1. Project overview

Creative Generation Voices is an inaugural program, encompassing two exciting divisions for 2017: a choral division to replace Choral Fanfare that has previously been run in various regions, and a secondary vocal soloist division. This will be a biennial state-wide program celebrating talented vocalists and choirs in

Queensland state schools.

The program will showcase the outstanding vocal talents from state school choirs as well as open up opportunities for students who are vocally gifted to exhibit their talent through performance.

Creative Generation Voices aims to:

promote excellence in choral and individual performance

highlight school-based choirs

offer students (individual or choir) as well as conductors the experience of expert adjudication and judging

provide students and teachers with the opportunity to perform in a music festival with choirs from other state

schools.

Regional heats The Choral heats will be held throughout May and June 2017 in various performance venues around the state.

Once nominations have closed, all schools will receive further details regarding their regional heat via email from

their regional program coordinator. Every nominated choir will be allocated a performance time at their relevant regional festival. This will be

communicated to schools through the coordinating teacher by the relevant regional program coordinator. It is the responsibility of the coordinating teacher to inform the various conductors, teachers and choirs involved from

their school of these details.

Each choir performance will be professionally adjudicated. The adjudicator will:

provide positive and constructive feedback to the students and the conductor

award each participating choir with a certificate at the end of their performance

in consultation with the regional program coordinator, determine how many choirs will perform and which

choirs will perform in the State Schools Choral regional final.

At the end of regional heats, the region’s adjudicator will select up to five primary and up to five secondary best performing choirs. These groups will perform at the regional finals.

School funding Travel and associated expenses for schools to attend their relevant Choral regional heat must be covered by the

school.

Regional finals

Regional finals will be held across the regions in late May or June 2017. After each regional final, adjudicators will select and award the most outstanding choir performances according to the table below.

Region Secondary division Primary division

Central Queensland 1 choir 1 choir

Darling Down South West 1 choir 1 choir

Far North Queensland 1 choir 1 choir

Metropolitan 3 choirs 3 choirs

North Coast 2 choirs 2 choirs

North Queensland 1 choir 1 choir

South East Queensland 2 choirs 2 choirs

Total 11 choirs 11 choirs

After all regional finals, the adjudicators will convene to select up to five secondary choirs and up to five primary

choirs who will be invited to perform at the primary and secondary State Schools Choral grand finals in Brisbane on 17 August 2017.

Travel and associated expenses for schools to attend the grand finals must be covered by the school. Travel subsidies may be provided depending on the ensemble location.

There is no requirement for adjudicators to allocate the full number of awards.

Grand final - primary and secondary The state festival will showcase high quality school-based choirs in Queensland state schools and provide a

unique event in which school based choirs will perform. The grand finals will be held in Brisbane on Thursday 17 August 2017. Up to five secondary choirs and up to five

primary choirs selected from the Choral regional finals will participate in this event.

The five primary choirs selected at regional finals will perform for adjudicators at the primary grand final concert to be held in Brisbane during the morning of 17 August 2017.

The primary choir deemed to have given the most outstanding performance will be invited to open the

secondary grand final concert

The five secondary choirs selected at the regional final will perform for adjudicators at the grand final concert to be held in Brisbane during the evening of 17 August 2017.

The secondary choir judged to give the most outstanding performance will receive the perpetual trophy.

Nominations

The Choral division begins with schools nominating to participate in the program. Primary and secondary state school choirs are nominated to participate by their conductor, school teacher or principal.

After nominations have closed, nominated school choirs will be allocated a performance time and notified of the

venue for their Choral regional heat.

Eligibility To be eligible for a regional award the choir must comply with the following eligibility guidelines.

a) Choirs

A choir must consist of:

no fewer than 10 students

no more than 70 students

students who are currently enrolled in the school

Choirs that are outside the eligibility guidelines are required to consult their Creative Generations regional

coordinator before nominating as there might be venue implications. Ineligible choirs will still receive an adjudication and certificate but are not eligible for a regional final and therefore state award. b) Time limits

Primary choirs are required to perform for 5–10 minutes.

Secondary choirs are required to perform for 10–15 minutes.

Performance times are to be strictly adhered to for all categories.

The timing of a choir’s performance will commence from the beginning of the first item and conclude at the

end of the last item. Breaks between pieces are included in the performance time.

All applause will be requested at the end of the last piece of each choir performance to maintain time and flow.

c) Conductors

There is no restriction on who can conduct the choir for adjudicated performances. d) Accompaniment

A digital piano/acoustic piano and a conductor’s stand will be provided at regional heats and finals as live accompaniment is preferred.

Choral Conductors are responsible for organising and funding their own accompaniment.

Choral Conductors choosing to use backing tracks will need to bring their own device (C4T/mobile phone/tablet etc) that can be plugged into an amp. Please be aware that there may not be time for sound

checks prior to performances.

Backing tracks will be accompaniment only (i.e. no vocals). e) Microphones

No microphones will be provided for choirs or individuals to use during the heats.

f) Risers

Choir risers will be placed on stage.

No stage crew will be provided for regional heats and finals so it won’t be possible to move risers. Any movements will need to be choreographed with this in mind.

g) Repertoire

No two choirs from the same school are permitted to perform exactly the same program. More than 80 per cent of the repertoire (for example, at least 8 minutes of a 10 minute program) must be different.

Page 7: Teacher information booklet - Amazon S3 · award each participating choir with a certificate at the end of their performance ... The secondary choir judged to give the most outstanding

h) Scores

Conductors must provide a complete copy of scores being performed by the choir on the day of all

performances (at regional heats, regional finals, and grand final) to the program coordinator/manager, prior to adjudication. The scores should be in a clearly labelled folder. Lead sheets are accepted, lyrics only are not.

If your choir falls outside the eligibility guidelines please contact the regional program coordinator.

Adjudication Adjudication is not based on a comparison with other choirs performing in the Creative Generation Voices Choral

event. Choirs are adjudicated on the quality of their performance.

Every choir will receive either a gold, silver, bronze or participation certificate, based on the adjudicator’s assessment of the choir’s performance 'on the day'. The adjudicator/s do not take into consideration the past

achievements of the choir or the choir’s future potential.

Criteria and standards The standards of gold, silver, bronze and participation are accompanied by descriptor statements that outline

the expected qualities of each group’s performance and should help students to understand the merits the adjudicator/s will be looking for. The descriptor statements should be read in conjunction with the four criteria. Together the criteria and the

descriptor statements provide succinct and easily understood directions of what students and conductors need

to aim for to reach a certain standard. The final standard awarded (gold, silver, bronze or participation) is an overall judgement of all the criteria

collectively — even though it is not necessary for the group to have met the same standard descriptor statement for every criteria.

If you have nominated for Creative Generation State Schools’ Onstage 2017 and have submitted an expression of interest to nominate for the Creative Generation Voices, you will not be required to upload your video footage.

However, you will still need to submit your online nomination.

Audition footage Audition footage and support material must be uploaded during the nomination process. Please ensure footage

is clearly labelled with student name and school, e.g. JaneSmithCGENSHS.

Tips for maximising your ability to upload audition footage and support material:

1. The size of files for audition footage should not exceed 30 MB. 2. Do not leave uploading audition footage to the last nomination day as excessive use of the system will incur

delays.
