  • SocialHousingIt was reported that TRONPnui has become a Class I: Social Landlord, an accreditation assigned by the Community Housing Regulatory Authority (CHRA). This follows on from TRONPnui’s provisional accreditation. This will allow TRONPnui to be eligible for income-related rent subsidies for tenants on entering into a contract with the Social Housing Agency – Ministry of Social Development.

TeTinioPorouIt was reported that the redevelopment of Te Tini o Porou is nearing completion. The Te Tini o Porou redevelopment will house approximately 30 Gisborne based Whanau Oranga staff, currently spread throughout five locations in Kaiti. The redevelopment will include specific areas for whanau and rangatahi. It is expected an official opening will be held in August, a date for this will be confirmed in July.

NgatiPorouHauoraUpdateThe Board received a thorough update from the Ngati Porou Hauora Board.

The Board encourages Gisborne whanau to support the Gisborne / Puhi Kaiti clinic by enrolling, as a means of supporting the provision of health services on the Coast. It was noted that work continues to integrate our Whanau Oranga services with Ngati Porou Hauora services, and vice versa.

A thorough funding relief package was discussed at the June TRONPnui Board meeting, involving a dividend distribution and retirement of debt, to provide certainty to Ngati Porou Hauora and Ngati Porou over the coming 3 to 5 years. More information will be announced once details are finalised.

NgatiPorouReoStrategyDr Wayne Ngata presented the draft reo strategy to the TRONPnui Board in June, after reviewing a number of strategies adopted by previous boards and Ngati Porou. Dr Ngata noted that according to Census 2013 survey information of people who identified themselves as Ngati Porou, and how many conversed in Te Reo, these statistics showed there is clear evidence not only the Maori language but the language of Ngati Porou is not healthy.

In reference to the Strategy he noted there are five points of consideration for resuming normal transmission:

    • Naturalintergenerationaltransmissionandacknowledging the state of Ngati Porou Reo

    • UnderstandingandappreciatingwhatisNgatiPorouReo

    • Dispersedpopulation

    • Appreciatethereareanumberofexistinginitiativesin place now, therefore we don’t need to reinvent the wheel but co-ordinate better

    • Oralproficiency

The following Iwi Reo Strategy Goals were noted:

    • TeManaoteReooNgatiPorou(CurrentStatusoftheReo)

    • TePunaoteReooNgatiPorou(Corpus–collectionofthe language)

    • TeAkoiteReooNgatiPorou(Acquisitionofthelanguage)

    • TePumaukiteReooNgatiPorou(CriticalAwarenessoflanguageandunderstandingisrequiredtorevitalisethelanguage)

    • TePuakioteReooNgatiPorou(Usage)

The Board agreed to note and adopt the Ngati Porou Te Reo Strategy and Toitu Ngati Porou progress this forward. Toitu Ngati Porou will facilitate a hui a iwi to discuss the Ngati Porou Reo Strategy, and to seek its endorsement.

More detail will follow in terms of wananga of the strategy and its implementation.

NGATI POROU WHAIRAWA MONEY SMART WANANGA TRONPnui and MWDI have teamed up again to run a financial literacy and money management wananga for rangatahi, aged between 16 and 24. The wananga is FREE to attend and will be held over three days at Hinepare Marae in Rangitukia from the 29th to the 31st of July.
