Concept

TeWarihiHetaraka(NgatiHine,NgātiWai,NgāPuhi,Tainui)Tohungawhakairo,teacherandmentor,TeWarihiHetarakaisknowninTeTaiTokerauandbeyondasanauthorityonwhakairo/toiMāori.Hewaschosenbykaumātuaasa15-year-oldtorepresentthetribesofTaiTokerauintheFirstintakeofthetraineesoftheNZMāoriArts&CraftsInstitute,andhassinceworkedcontinuouslytopreserveanddisseminatemātaurangaMaorithroughhisworksandteaching.ForthepastdecadehehasbeenPouWhakahaereforTePuniKōkiriandatrusteeoftheHihiauaCulturalCentreTrust.In2017hewontheoutstandingindividualcontarbutiontotheArtsawardandHewasarecipientofaCreativeNZKingiIhakaAwardforlifetimecontributiontoMaoriculture.
