Streaming Services IntroducedStreaming services started as an add-

on to DVD and digital downloads, but with the increase of faster internet connec ons, like those you can get with TCT’s Fiber to the Home, there has been an expansion in online streaming video services. Ne lix, Amazon, Hulu and Sling are some of the more well-known services. Some services off er very specifi c content as well, like independent movies or family friendly shows. Also the majority of streaming services do not off er local channels from your demographic area. You can get these channels with TCT’s Nu-Stream service.

Ne lix off ers a solid selec on at all mes and they have original programming

to take into account, too. Ne lix off ers standard monthly plans or you can opt to pay more for increased content.

Amazon Video has about 40,000 tles to stream. Amazon off ers free viewing for a por on of content through an Amazon Prime membership. Look for the “Prime” banner atop selec ons that stream for free. Everything else is available to purchase or rent (for Prime and non-Prime members). Amazon also enables offl ine downloads, so if you haven’t fi nished watching your video you can just download it to your tablet and watch it later.

While Ne lix and Amazon typically get new TV series months or even a year a er their TV debuts, Hulu gets new content almost immediately a er airing on TV. Hulu also off ers previous series and episodes. One of the drawbacks, however, is that Hulu s ll includes ads. An ad-free er costs more, though some (479-2021) popular shows will s ll include 15-second pre-roll and 30-second post-roll ads.

Sling is probably as close to the tradi onal TV experience as you can get. Sling TV off ers live access to channels like AMC, TBS, The Food Network, CNN, TNT, and more. You also get ESPN and ESPN2, but there is a charge for Sports Extra packages. Sling also off ers a “mul -stream” op on, which lets you watch content on up to three devices simultaneously, for a fee.

There are some important ques ons you should ask before subscribing to a streaming service.

1. Do I have adequate internet to service video?

2. Will my Smart TV/Streaming Device support the service I am subscribing to? (Not all streaming services are supported by every streaming device or Smart TV)

3. How do I want to view content, and does the streaming service off er the shows my family and I want to watch?

In the end it is important to do your homework when considering streaming content.
