Trevor and I had both qualified for the Hawaii Ironman race, and training on a tropical island was a wish come true. I work for the IRS, and Trevor is an auditor for the state comptrol- ler. September is a slow time at work for both of us, so we reserved the condo for two weeks right after Labor Day, a perfect time for us to log big miles before the October race. We stepped off the plane in the afternoon and inhaled the warm, humid air that the trade winds swept across the blue Caribbean Sea. “We’re away from work, and we own our time for the next two weeks,” I said. “Not a word or thought about taxes and scofflaws,” he said. We explored the more populated side of the island in our rental car that afternoon, and later indulged in a big meal in one of the many restaurants in town. I spread the map of the island on the table as we waited to be served, and pointed to a section of shoreline along the leeward coast. “These private beaches border estates. This area should be a great place to swim without worrying about jet skis and boats. I figure it’s about fifteen minutes by car from our condo to this point where we can start a long out-and- back swim along the reef. Afterwards we can cruise the public roads that climb through the hills to see if we want to bike or run there.” Trevor sipped his beer and nodded. “Sounds like a plan.” When our food arrived—plates piled with chicken and rice for Trevor, and a medley of seafood for me—we dug in. selected point. When I had awakened, I had feltjet lag and the dinner weighing me down, but Ididn’t give them too much thought when wedove into the crystal-clear water and headednorth about one hundred meters from shore. Thegnawing feeling in my belly grew with eachstroke, and after twenty minutes I realized atleast one end of my GI tract was going to giveup very soon.

“Trevor,” I called to my brother several metersahead of me. “I think the seafood last night ishaunting me. I’m going to lose it in the water ifI don’t get out.”

“Do you want to return to the car?”“I don’t think I can wait that long. I’m going

to swim ashore right here. Why don’t you con-tinue with your planned swim and return for mein twenty minutes. Maybe this will pass.”

As soon as he agreed, I headed for a smallstretch of private beach surrounded by rocksand old coral. I ducked behind some trees andshrubs to take care of business. That solved theimmediate emergency, but my gut wasn’t readyto enter the water again. I felt a wave of chill, and a few minutes later, a flush of fever. I did-n’t know how sick I might become, but swim-

ming back to the car at the moment seemed tobe an unrealistic option. The shoreline waslargely rocks and coral rubble with scatteredpatches of sand, making a barefoot walk back onthe shoreline nearly impossible. I looked for anynearby boats. A few sailboats plied the deeperwater in the distance, but they couldn’t enterthe shallows of the coral reef. How will I returnto the car?

As I endured another few minutes of chillsand a roiling bellyache, I moved away from thewater to a sandy, vegetated path that led to alarge, well-kept bungalow. I stayed low to avoidanyone on the private property from noticingme. I was embarrassed to admit why I was unin-tentionally trespassing. I saw two SUV’s parkedin a circular clearing, and three people seated ata table under a lanai about twenty meters away. The trade winds blew in my direction, carryingthe sounds of their voices. I didn’t hear theirwords distinctly, but I guessed the two men anda woman were having a serious discussion overbreakfast. I glanced again at the SUV’s, thinkingmaybe someone could give me a ride back to ourrental car. The private roads to the estates on

Toni MartinezGroup: F35-39International Distance

This was my second year par-ticipating in the Palm DesertTriathlon event. Last year’sevent was quite memorable forme as it taught me a valuablelesson on what being preparedfor a triathlon race (or, for thatmatter, any race) is all about.

During last year’s event, Ihad the misfortune of comingto race day unorganized and unprepared.First, I had forgotten to bring my gear bagand I instead used a brown paper grocery bagto carry and hold all of my equipment. Thathigh-tech grocery gear bag eventually disinte-grated into pulp since it began to rain duringthe event. Secondly, I had not put enough timeand effort into training for the swim portion inthe prior months before the race. Having thisnagging thought before the race only exacerbat-ed my worry and concern, and as a result, Ihyperventilated during the swim which stalled and slowed myrace time (it is such a marvelous experience doing the breast-stroke, backstroke, and dog paddle in a tri event). Luckily for me,I was doing the “sprint” race. And third, I had not dressed appro-priately for the race. The weather turned cold andrainy during the event, as I hadexpected it to be warmand sunny.

Last year’s mistakeswere valuable lessonsthat I took to heart inpreparing myself for thisyear’s 2011 event. I hadconstantly monitored theforecasted weather condi-tions for the upcomingevent, made a checklist of allthe gear I needed for therace, and made sure that I hadinvested enough time, not onlyin my swim, but also in my bike and run training.

The track workouts with Tom Piszkin, and the insights heshared every week, greatly helped in improving my running formand speed. In addition, I was able to gradually increase mythreshold for pain and discomfort in my runs. On the weekends I

would perform brick workoutsthat helped increase myendurance and decrease mytransition times between thebike and run.

I also had my bike fit adjusted byDean Sprague, PedPowerPerform Lab,using Retül. The techniques and chartinformation that he shared were alsobeneficial in my bike training. Ibecame much more conscious of mypedal strokes in making sure that itwas performed correctly and with effi-

ciency. I still have quite a bit of work to do withimproving my pedal stroke, but I’m sure thatwith consistent training and practice overtime, I will make progress.

I made certain preparations for my body aweek prior to the event. I made an effort toget at least seven to eight hours of sleepeach night (however, the night before the

race is another story). Ihydrated constantly. Iavoided junk foods andmade sure I took mymulti-vitamins daily.

It turned out to be aperfectly beautiful day onthe day of the event. Thetemperature of the waterwas in the mid 60’s. The lakewater was calm. At the start

of my bike leg, the air temperature was at around 67F.By the end of my race, the temperature had risen toapproximately 73F. The road is fairly flat, as theInternational distance race entailed two laps oneach of the bike and run courses.

The venue was a great location, not only for therace, but as a weekend getaway from San Diego. It

is also a great place for families, pets, picnics, and camping. The event was well organized and

the site and facilities were very clean. It was a greattime of the year to come and visit the La Quinta/Palm Desertarea where the temperatures were not uncomfortably warm. There were quite a number of teams from different parts ofCalifornia that participated. I met lots of new and interestingpeople. I believe that this was a good pre-season race for theyear. I do plan on participating again next year and I hope that

In January of 2010 I was on a bike trainingride getting an early start for the upcoming sea-son. I had set my goals high after coming off ofwhat I call a successful 2009 season. I waslooking forward to stepping up into the nextage bracket known as double nickels... 55.

This ride I was approaching a red light, andanticipating a green light is when “things” hap-pened. Realizing the light was not going to turn

green, I clipped out. Right after I clipping out,the light turned green. I attempted to clip inbefore losing my balance, but my foot slippedoff of the pedal which caused me to do a sud-den push up on the horns, handle bars that is.

My shoulder absorbedmost of my bodyweight, which in turnsnapped a tendon inmy shoulder. Thisresulted in rotatorcuff surgery inFebruary, no racingfor six months, andput an end to the2010 season for me.

2010 goalsbecame 2011 goalswith a few addi-

tional chal-lenges. I hadadded a fewi n c h e saround mybody. Notgood whenyou are 25but evenw o r s ewhen youare 55.The shoulder hadhealed but still a little weak. I started exercis-ing in November with weights, got back on thebike in December, and soon added running andswimming to my training schedule. I had forgot-ten what it was like balancing training hourswith family and work hours.

Play time was over and I couldn’t wait to getback in the game. During the last months ofclub duathlons, I found out how fast everyonehad gotten and just how many notches I hadslipped. Training and racing is all good, but thetruth is in the chip and I was below my goals.

The first race was around the corner and I hadstill realized I had a ways to go.

First up was the Toyota Desert Triathlon,International/Olympic distance. Staying inSalton Sea at my buddies home about 45 min-utes away from the race venue allowed me toget a good night’s rest and have an easy driverace morning.

I like the desert course, as it is flat and has afresh water reservoir swim. Out and back on theswim followed by two loops on the bike and run.

I came out of the water near the back of myage group, but still nearmy predicted time. I cameout of T1 in stride. Thebike leg went well, nowind, smooth roads, andI sucked up needed nutri-tion. I made good timeon the bike. My new bikefit was perfect, courtesyof PedPower PerformLab. I did not push thebike as I was a littleconcerned about a nag-ging “ass” muscle andwanted to save some-thing for the run. Myaverage watts werebelow my goal of 190but my bike time was

the fastest I have had on this course. Bottomline - a lot less effort and more speed mustmean that the fit and mechanics have improved.Maybe it was the race wheels (rear disc wheel,Zipp 404 on the front) and/or no wind.

I came into T2 a little “hot” and hit the wrongbrake lever on the flying dismount. Got a laughout of the volunteers… guess I need a littlework on the dismount. The run was two loopsaround a lake with a quarter mile of sand. Oneof my goals for this race was not to stop at anypoint. With less than a half-mile to go, my

stomach started to churn from a bad com-bination of Gu and lake

water. I walked forabout 25 yards whiledry heaving, whichwas entertaining tothe racers passing by,as well as some of thespectators. Oh well, Ilaughed, got back instride, and was glad tocross the finish line.<ED finish time of2:30:59>

Exercise is a great way to stay fit, but whatyour clients eat before and after workouts alsoimpacts fitness. In fact, these meals and snackscan make a difference in the quality of workoutsand the resulting benefits obtained.

What to Eat and WhenBefore Exercise

Meals: Recommendto your athletes thatthey eat about two tofour hours before theystart huffing and puff-ing. Carbs to top offmuscle fuel reserves, and some lean protein, should top the menu.Steer them clear ofslower-to-digest, fattyfoods and foods with higher fiber levels justbefore exercise.

Snacks: If all that can be reasonably mus-tered is a snack before the sweating starts, rec-ommend that it be high in easily digested carbs;time it for about an hour before the sessionbegins.

After ExercisePush carbs to restore

muscle fuel reserves, and some protein tohelp in the repair andbuilding of muscletissue. This is notime for dilly-dally-ing — eating forrecovery shouldbegin within thir-ty minutes of fin-ishing a workout. Also stress the gradual replenishmentof fluids and sodium lost from sweating.

Meal Time Is Fuel TimeEmphasize to your clients that the meal or

snack before exercise is what's going to powertheir workout. Think: quality in, quality out. Ifthey're slamming down a donut and guzzling anenergy drink for breakfast, or zipping in for ahigh-fat, fast-food meal pre-exercise, chances

are good that the quality of the workout won’tbe high.

The following are meal and snack options forbetter performance. Share this list with yourclients so that they can make wiser decisions

when it comes to theirsports nutrition.

Clothing with a purpose

Two recent cases exemplify the necessity of ade-quate insurance and briefly demonstrate howtwo bicyclists got justice..

In light of the recent publicity involving roadrage, hit-and-run of bicyclists, and the inherentrisks of bicycling, two recent bicycle vs.auto accident settle-ments underscore thenecessity of havingadequate insurancecoverage. In onecase, the bicyclistwas hit by a car andsustained severeinjuries, requiringsurgery and several days in the hospital.

The bicyclist’s medical bills exceeded$250,000. However, the driver had limitedinsurance policy limits and did not have anumbrella policy to help cover the damages. Inspite of the inadequate insurance, I was able toobtain a settlement for three times the insur-ance policy limits and also secured a waiver ofa $250,000 medical lien on the case (with theassistance of co-counsel) so that the bicyclistcould receive payment for his injuries. In order

to pay the settlement, the driver had to takeout a loan for the settlement amount exceedingthe policy limits. This could have been avoidedhad the driver had higher auto insurance policylimits and/or an umbrella policy. Moreover, if

the bicyclist had anumbrella policy, itwould have likelykicked in where thedriver’s coverage leftoff.

The next caseemphasizes theneed for healthinsurance. A bicy-clist hit by a pick up

truck sustained a rotator cuff shoulder injurythat prevented him from obtaining employmentuntil his injuries were surgically repaired. Thebicyclist had no health insurance, so all of thesurgical costs had to be paid in advance, whichthe bicyclist could not afford. I was able tosecure litigation financing for the surgery, which was repaid from the settlement with thedriver’s insurance company. Shortly after thesurgery and the case settlement, the bicyclisthappily reported that he had gotten a new job,

was working, and his shoulderwas back to normal.

As with any investment, it isimportant to review your insur-ance policies periodically so to ensure you are adequatelycovered.

TCSD Cares Quintana Roo Bike Raffle WinnerTCSD Free Speed Clinic (hosted by Sea Coast

Exclusive Properties “aka Brian Long”, QuintanaRoo, and Hi-Tech Bikes) raffled off a new 2011QR triathlon bike and it could not have gone to

a better Tri Club member. The event raised$1000 dollars for TCSD Cares.

Here is a note from the winner, Mike Braun:

It was a pleasure meeting you and Christonight. Needless to say, I am incredibly excited(and still in a little shock) about winning the QRSeduza. I am competing in the Vineman 70.3 and

IM Canada later this year, so Iwas actually in the market fora tri bike. That said, I onlyrecently started working againafter having been out of work

since last summer. Longstory, short… fundshave been tight so I wasstarting to think I might

need to ride my road bike up Richter passthis August. Not now!

On a less selfish front, I just wanted toacknowledge your efforts on behalf of TCSD Cares.I don’t usually win anything… other than theoccasional McDonald’s gift certificate. The onlyreason I bought $40 worth of tickets tonight isbecause I knew the money was going to a goodcause… oh, yeah… and I needed a bike. As anactive TNT marathon and triathlon alumnus, Ibelieve very strongly in giving back to the com-munity – and the TCSD members are AWESOME! Ilook forward to becoming more active within theTCSD community – and I will likely see you again

Stage 7 Route Description:The race, or option A group ride, begins in thecollege town of Claremont. The ClaremontColleges are universally regarded as one of thebest college consortiums in the world. Two neu-tral circuits in Claremont will get the rider’sready for the first climb of the day. Just 3.5miles from the start, the riders will face aneight-mile climb to the Village of Baldy andtheir first KOM. An acute left turn at the sum-mit will provide them another mile of climbingup Glendora Ridge Road. From here they havetwelve miles of narrow and twisting roads thatgradually descend to a fast and technicaldescent down the backside of GlendoraMountain Road. The vistas are spectacularthroughout the Angeles National Forest.Another descent down East Fork will take theriders to Highway 39 and the town ofAzusa. Heading east,t h e

race dips into the City of Glendora for the onlysprint of the day. At this point, the number offlat miles for Stage seven has dwindled to lessthan two and there are still nearly 30 miles tothe finish.

A left turn onto Glendora Mountain Road andit is “Game On”. The next KOM is a nine-mileclimb. That is followed by 12 miles of a slightclimb back to Baldy Village. A left turn backonto Baldy Road will see the race gain 1,000’ injust three miles… and the real climbing has noteven started! At Ice House Canyon, the routemakes a hard left turn and the sign to the skiarea points towards the sky. Over the next 2.5miles, the riders will face 10 switchbacks on aroad so steep that many of the race vehiclescannot make it to the top. At 1.2 miles to go,

the road straightens out.The finish line can beseen ahead. At .25 milesto go, the route makes ahard left and the racersface a final fiveswitchbacks to thefinish line. This willbe the stage wherelegends are madeand winners aredecided.

An Onshore Account, continuedthe island led to the curvy, two-lane highwaythat twisted around the hills, the route Trevorand I were planning to drive later. The drive toour car would probably take fifteen minutes.Should I ask for a ride or maybe a taxi?

As I pondered my choices, one of the menstood and walked to a small area of close-cutgrass a few meters from where I crouchedbehind vegetation. He took a ball and putterfrom a golf bag and began putting. He was mid-dle-aged with steel-gray hair combed in a styleI imagined require a trip to the barber every twoweeks. He wore showy gold rings and chains. Hewas clad in a white polo shirt, tan slacks, andloafers without socks to complement a casual, rich style. I didn’t exactly recognize him, but Iwas pretty sure I could profile him.

As he putted, he continued the conversationwith the couple, but now I could hear everyword. I realized immediately I would be in seri-ous trouble if they knew I was so close. In themeantime, my gut was doing summersaultswhile I endured waves of chills and fever.

“All the U.S. Army defense contracts I get arelegal, and the accounting is audited to the let-ter of the law,” he said. “That’s all squeakyclean. It gets a little interesting within the sub-contracts, though.”

“Guns and drugs?” the man at the table asked, raising his voice enough so it would carry to theputting green.

The golfer stopped putting for a moment togaze at the man. “No guns, no drugs, no contra-band, no Ponzi schemes.” He continued putting.“A few of the subcontractors are shell companiesfor gambling organizations. We pay certain ath-letes to lose, and make a tidy profit dependingon the betting line. It’s very simple. We need toexpand our offshore accounts, and that’s whereyou come in.” The golfer dropped a putt in thehole, picked up the ball, and set it a dozen feetfrom the hole. He putted again.

My stomach wrenched in knots as nausea andan urge to retch surged through me, but I could-n’t move. Not only didn’t I want anyone to seeor hear me, but I worked for the IRS. These wereexactly the kind of people both Trevor and Itracked down and brought to justice. I swal-lowed to hold back the volcano churning insideme.

During the conversation, the woman at thetable had entered the house. She returned tothe lanai with a coffee pot. “Coffee’s ready. Let’seat.”

As the golfer walked toward the table, I qui-etly crawled backwards on the path, returned tothe vegetation on the beach, and unloaded mygut again. I glanced to the reef north of thebeach and saw Trevor swimming towards me. Imet him in knee-deep water and described whatI had seen and heard. “What should we do?”

“The IRS has no jurisdiction here, though the FBI might be inter-ested in following the money trail.”

“I need to return to the condo. I’m as sick as a dog and can’tswim anymore today. These people are my best hope for getting aride back to our car.”

“Hold on, bro. I met a long-distance swimmer getting out of thewater where I turned around. He’s a caretaker on one of theseestates, and seemed like a mellow dude. He might even know thesefolks. Can you stand ten more minutes in the water?”

I barely made it to that estate before my gut gave out again. Notonly did the swimmer give us a ride, but he told us rumor afterrumor about the neighbors. Trevor and I looked at each other andnodded in tacit agreement.

My bout with food poisoning was gone by the next day, and weresumed serious training. During the next two weeks we spent onthe island, we revisited the swim course a number of times, andbicycled and ran near the private estate. Each time we surrepti-tiously noted vehicles, visitors, and comings and goings. In townone day we spotted the SUV and managed to photograph the con-tractor while we presumably were taking touristic snapshots of eachother. He was emerging from a bank and walking to his vehicle.

Trevor and I had sworn off work during our vacation, but neitherof us could resist the chase to nail this cheater. Like triathlon, thisdesire was in our blood. We hadn’t been teammates since our littleleague days, and the dual quests to train together and catch thecheaters made the two weeks very special. We landed on the islandto prepare for Ironman, and left fourteen days later in racing shapeand carrying a modest dossier to deliver to the FBI and IRS.

“It was your onshore account that led us to this guy and his off-shore account,” Trevor said as we packed our bags. “You and yourfood poisoning should take the credit.”

I looked at him and saw his goofy grin. I knew what was comingnext.

“But I’ll take all the credit when I beat you in the Ironman racenext month,” he said.

“Wanna bet? No one’s going to pay me to lose, you know.”He laughed. “You’re on. Let’s bet a seafood dinner.”
