    6HOME RENOVATION PROGRESS REPORT MARCH 16, 2011

Our God continues to supply us with opportunities to serve. The renovation of the home inthe Denbigh community is moving along slowly but steadily. A new hot water heater was in-stalled in February 2010 but it was not until the fall of 2010 that it was decided to move forwardwith an extensive renovation of the entire home. Due to the cold weather of December, Januaryand early February many tasks could not be carried out and so there was slow progress during thattime period. This worked out well since it provided time to source the huge variety and quantity

    of materials needed.

During those recent cold months some work was carried out inside the unit such as replac-ing a toilet and other plumbing issues. A friend of the church gave a dishwasher and it was in-stalled. Three interior doors were hung and some electrical problems were resolved. Three clos-ets were framed out and the subfloor in one bathroom was replaced.

Many things began to happen around mid-February. An anonymous donor provided a heatpump system and it, along with new ducting, was installed by Tommy Garner Air-conditioningand Heating. Mr. Garner also provided a bathroom cabinet complete with sink, faucet and drainand several vinyl windows. The windows are in place now and are making a huge difference in

comfort and reduced heating bills for the family.

Gault Electric LLC provided and installed a new electrical panel with circuit breakers tohandle the heat pump and resolve some improper wiring in the old panel. The Elmer Back GiftingCenter supplied a new vacuum cleaner and a cabinet for the second bathroom. This cabinet waswithout a countertop so Brunk Tile and Interiors gave the necessary materials to build a tile coun-tertop. Sherwin-Williams Newport News-Denbigh has given paint and the family has painted theceilings throughout the home. We anticipate they will be giving more too! A number of individu-als have donated various materials such as doors, faucets, plumbing supplies, wood trim and furni-ture. Storage problems were resolved when we acquired a storage unit from PODS and it certainly

has been put to good use.

It has been absolutely amazing how God has been involved in this effort. From the outset itwas obvious that there was no way our church could come up with the funds for this multi-thousand dollar project. But God has stepped in. He has brought many caring individuals to comeforward with donations of materials and funds. Just today I learned of someone who will supplythe remaining six windows and may have a lead on the vinyl siding! Our God is indeed an awe-some God!

There is still much work ahead. Two exterior doors will be replaced as well as the six re-maining windows. The whole house will be stripped of its siding and replaced with new siding. Most of the wood paneling will be taken down and new paneling put in its place with insulationadded in the exterior walls where necessary. Then wood trim goes in to supply the finishing touchto the walls. Flooring throughout the entire unit will finish up the inside. Last of all will be the

replacement of the underpinning and badly deteriorated wood deck.

The active workers so far include Jay Dunn, Bev Daniels, Franz Thiessen, Bob Murphy,Keith Pennell, Jan Spruill and Blair Gloss. If you would like to join the effort please contact KeithPennell at 877-3119. The team also welcomes monetary donations to the cause. They may bedesignated to Home Renovation.

The last point to address is money spent. The expenditures so far total $723. These fundscame from fund raising (the Denbigh Doers and the dessert auction), donations of members and

friends of DPC and the Outreach Committee budget.

One Great Hour of Sharing: All around us we see needs resulting from natural

disasters, poverty and economic downturns. How can we hope to help so many

people who are in distress? As a church, we want to express Gods love to thosearound us in practical ways, as well as to share the gospel of Christ. One Great

Hour of Sharing is the offering that enables us to reach out to those less fortunate

both in the U.S. and abroad. This offering supports aid though Presbyterian or-

ganizations providing food, disaster relief and other needs. For example, Presby-

terian organizations are providing assistance in Haiti to provide clean water, food

and medical assistance following last years earthquake. Please be generous in

your support of our churchs work though this ministry by giving on Palm

    Sunday, April 17.

    Gideon Offering

Gideons International emphasis was on Sunday, February 27. Mr. Hilton Jones updated ourcongregation on the work of the Gideons around the world. We contributed $134.00 to thisministry.

    Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has sent $100,000 from One Great Hour ofSharing funds to help in the initial Japan disaster response in cooperation with our ecumenical

partner Church World Service (CWS). PDA is working closely with PC(USA) World Missionin identifying the best way to respond to the needs of our long-term mission partners as they

become engaged in the disaster response.

Please consider increasing your support to the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering

this year on Palm Sunday. Special needs and opportunities have arisen in response to this cur-rent crisis, and PDA invites you to share your blessings through designated gifts that providethe resources needed to assist with immediate, long-term and unmet needs of this disaster.

If you wish to give to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, you may write a check to

Denbigh Presbyterian Church and note in the memo line: Japan Earthquake and Tsu-

    nami disasters #DR000117.

Denbigh Presbyterian Church members have donated a total of $375.00 toward this fund

    as of Sunday, March 20.

Please pray for the people of Japan and other areas affected by the earthquake and tsu-nami. Thank you for all your support and prayers throughout this time of great need.

During the month of April our three year old classes will have a visit from the VirginiaZoo. A representative of the zoo will present a program entitled Eyes, Ears, and Noses. Itwill teach the children about how animals use their senses to help them survive in the wild. Our students in these classes recently spent time exploring with and learning about their own

five senses, so this program should be a fun way to reinforce this learning.

DPPK families continue to support the ministries of DPC. During the month of March, our students contributed 58 items to the food pantry, donated items for the PORT hygiene kitsand one family also made a financial contribution toward the bagged lunch program for PORT.

The school will be closed April 4-8 for Spring Break. Our school year is winding down, but we have a lot more fun and learning to do when we return from this time spent with ourfamilies! We hope you have an opportunity to take a break this Spring, too, and enjoy theweather as the temperatures warm up.

    Ann and Bill Troyer

The family of Arno Pauley would like to thank the congregation for their support and prayersduring his time of illness. When I was ten years old, he turned his life over to Jesus Christ. At

our church in West Virginia he taught an adult Sunday school class and averaged 150 people

each week. When my parents moved here in 1978, he continued teaching at Hilton Presbyte-

rian until he was ninety two and physically impaired. He had a remarkable memory even at

the time of his passing at the age of 97. Through Christ our family was truly blessed.

    Sincerely,

    Rick and Karen Pauley
