Laugh-A-Bit with Tidbits On New Year's Eve, Marilyn stood up in the local pub and
said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of midnight, she wanted every husband to be standing next to the one person who made his life worth living.
Well, it was kind of embarrassing. As the clock struck, the bartender was almost crushed to death.

The photo collage on the wall catercorner from my friend Susan’s kitchen catches my eye whenever I pop by her back door for a visit. Brimming with images of kids, interesting friends, exotic places and happy baby smiles, it’s always an attention-grabber. I call it a “hands on” Pinterest board, but to her -- a retired fifth-grade teacher -- it’s an old-school bulletin board that informs and entertains.
“My stainless-steel refrigerator is clear of photos nowadays, and I love the clean look of the easy-to-do wall arrangement that hangs year-round,” she said as she pointed to her collection. “The beautiful photos tell the annual stories of our favorite people. Plus, they’re a conversation starter that leads to sharing the ins and outs of our lives. A birth, a graduation, a wedding, a funeral, a trip to the Rock of Gibraltar.”
If you’re inspired to create this simple portrait gal-lery for your home, here are tips and tricks for the post-holiday family project.
1. Purchase tacks or small push pins and a stylish bulletin board, or paint the frame of an old one to match your hallway or room decor.
2. Choose holiday photo cards that have particular meaning to you and your family. Trim them to focus on essential subject matter and to provide plenty of space to fit them all on the board. School-age kids can use a ruler and pencil to create lines as a guide before they cut with scissors or a paper cutter.
3. Set the bulletin board flat on a table. Arrange the photos in a pleasing combination. Attach to the board with the pins or tacks. Hang on the wall.
4. Next year, when the 2015 holiday photos are ready to arrange, place the old photos in an envelope labeled “2014,” and store in a box for safe keeping and viewing.

Americans’ food preferences in the year ahead will be driven by a continued interest in global cuisines, balanced nutrition, community connections and a de-sire for adventurous eating experiences, according to research by the Sterling-Rice Group. Here are its top culinary trends that will stand out on restaurant menus, expand onto grocery shelves and attract consumer at-tention across the U.S. in 2015.
Advanced Asian: From Filipino food to a new gen-eration of Thai, not one but a host of more complex and true-to-region Asian foods will dominate in 2015.
Matcha Madness: The nev-er-ending quest for wellness and energy will lead many to Japanese matcha, a nutrient powerhouse green tea now hit-ting the market in convenient formats like lattes, sodas and ready-to-drink cans.
Hop-Free Suds: Channel-ing their medieval predecessors, craft brewers are making unhopped beers with herbs, spices and bitter plants yielding unique and intriguing flavors instead of hoppy bitterness.
Incendiary Charcoal: Look for more excitement around Asian styles of super-hot-burning charcoal, as well as charcoal coloring and enhancing breads,
crackers and even cosmetics. The Local Grain Network: Products made from
freshly milled flour are making their way to consumers thanks to the growing network of farmers, bakers and chefs committed to local grain production.
Coconut Sugar Sweetness: Boasting a lower gly-cemic index than white sugar makes coconut sugar popular among consumers -- from natural food fans
and sweets-loving Paleos to Southeast Asian food lovers -- looking for better-for-you foods.
Farm to Table Kosher: With keeping kosher on the rise, kosher food businesses are addressing consumer de-mand to eat in more sustain-able, conscious and cultural ways.
The Hunger Games -- Restaurant Edition: Dining concept incubators create lively experiences where cu-rious diners test experimental
eateries and vote with their forks in revolving pop-up settings or hip dining parks.
The Ugly Fruit & Vegetable Movement: Mis-shapen and funny-looking produce will no longer get picked over as food resourcefulness and efforts to combat hunger come into sharper focus.

published by Krause Books. There are at least six Roseville price guides, but this one is my favorite, and I feel it accurately reflects current values. Moran believes your bookends in green are worth about $140 for the pair.
• • •Q: My dad collected autographed first editions, and I have in-
herited his collection. Among them are signed copies of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” and Gail Sheehy’s “Passages.” Where can I market my books? -- Carole, Buffalo, N.Y.
A: One of the better rare-book dealers is Bauman’s, 535 Madi-son Ave., New York, NY 10022; 212-751-0011; www.bauman-srarebooks.com. Incidentally, Gail Sheehy has just published her memoir, “Daring My Passages” (William Morrow Books, $29.99). “Passages” created quite a stir when it was first published in 1976. In fact, the Library of Congress has named it as one of the 10 most influential books of our time.
• • •Q: I have been watching the series about the Roosevelt family
on PBS. I found some FDR campaign buttons in my granny’s sew-ing box. I would like to know how much they are worth. -- Bill, Spokane, Washington
A: One of the better references is “Warman’s Political Collect-ibles: Identification & Price Guide” by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen and published by Krause Books. It features dozens of FDR buttons in full-color. Dr. Nappen is a political science professor at New Jersey’s Monmouth University and a member of the American Po-litical Items Collectors (APIC).
• • •Q: I have three early American paintings that I believe to be
quite valuable. Can you recommend an expert who can help me determine values? -- Stan, Hartford, Conn.
A: Jeffrey W. Cooley specializes in American painting and might be able to help you. His contact information is The Cooley Gallery, Inc., 25 Lyme St., Old Lyme, CT 06371; www.cooleygal-lery.com. Q: Every year I have to deal with brown and dying grass, because the climate we live in gets so hot in the late summer. We also have water restrictions to deal with. How can I keep my lawn healthy? -- Bryan in Norcross, Ga.

“No one ever regarded the First of January with indifference. It is that from which all date their time, and count upon what is left. It is the nativity of our common Adam.” -- Charles Lamb
“The etiquette question that troubles so many fastidious people on New Year’s Day is: How am I ever going to face those people again?” -- Judith Martin (Miss Man-ners)
“Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, accord-ing to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past.” -- Henry Ward Beecher
“Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.” -- Bill Vaughn
“Celebratin’ New Year’s Eve is like eatin’ oranges. You got to let go your dignity t’ really enjoy ‘em.” -- Edna Ferber
“A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.” -- Author Unknown
“The fresh start is always an illusion, but a necessary one.” -- Eleanor Clark
“New Year’s Eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the com-ing of darkness on other nights.” - Hamilton Wright Mabie
“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” -- Bill Vaughan

If you have trouble keeping New Year’s resolutions, here are some suggestions:
• Focus on one resolution at a time. Divide and conquer the activities to achieve your desired results. Break larger tasks into smaller ones.
• Create a sense of accountability. Designate a friend, mentor or com-panion for sharing successes, monitoring progress and offering support. The benefit of involving others in your goals and plans is instant access to experience, knowledge and wisdom. It also raises the bar of respon-sibility.
• Persist until completed. A resolution achieved is a combination of consistency and hard work. If you fall behind schedule or are sidetracked for any reason, try to refocus -- and don’t give up! Don’t surrender to temptation, difficulty or temporary failure. Persist until you achieve the goal.
• Cultivate personal integrity. Have a clear purpose, commit to success and be accountable.

CHEDDAR CHEESE SCONESCheese scones from New Zealand make perfect
holiday snacks. Serve them as bite-sized hors d’oeuvres, or as an accompaniment to the main meal if you are planning light fare.
Note: Be sure to work the dough quickly with light fingers to prevent the butter from softening. For the flakiest scones, manipulate dough briefly and keep it cold. Place it back in the refrigerator for a short time if it begins to warm up.
2 cups all-purpose flour1/2 teaspoon salt2 teaspoons baking powder1/4 teaspoon cayenne4 tablespoons (2 ounces) chilled butter3 ounces coarsely grated Cheddar cheese3/4 cup milk
1. Mix flour, salt, baking powder and cayenne in large bowl. Cut in chilled butter with pastry cutter or fingers. Work quickly to keep dough cold.
2. Mix cheese into dough. Gradually add milk while mixing with fingers until you have soft, workable, non-sticky dough. (You may not need all the milk.) Knead gently until dough holds together and feels soft.
3. Cut dough in half, shape each into ball and flatten balls into neat, round discs. Dust with flour, wrap in plastic and chill.
4. Preheat oven to 400 F.5. Flour-dust rolling pin, and roll each disc until
finger-thick. Cut each into 6 or 8 pie-shaped pieces. Brush with milk, cream or egg wash (mixture of eggs and water). Place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until tops begin to brown. Remove and serve fresh. Serves 8.
Tip: These scones freeze well. To refresh, toast lightly or warm for a few minutes in me-dium heat oven.

EGGS STUFFED WITH SMOKED SALMONDeviled eggs are a timeless brunch tradition. Impress your guests by
adding smoked salmon, cucumber and dill to this hassle-free recipe.
10 large eggs 2 ounces smoked salmon, finely chopped 3 tablespoons light mayonnaise 1/4 cup cucumber, chopped 2 teaspoons fresh dill, chopped, plus sprigs for garnish Black pepper
1. In 4-quart saucepan, place eggs and enough cold water to cover by at least 1 inch; heat to boiling on high. Immediately remove saucepan from heat and cover tightly; let stand 15 minutes. Pour off hot water, and run cold water over eggs to cool. Peel eggs.
2. Slice eggs lengthwise in half. Gently remove yolks and place in medium bowl; with fork, break yolks into chunks. Reserve 1 tablespoon chopped salmon. To egg yolks, add mayonnaise, cucumber, 2 teaspoons chopped dill, 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper and remaining salmon; gently stir until combined. (Egg-yolk mixture and egg whites can be covered separately and refrigerated up to 24 hours.)
3. Place egg whites on serving dish or in jelly-roll pan lined with paper towels (to prevent eggs from rolling). Spoon about 1 tablespoon egg-yolk mixture into each egg-white half. Top eggs with reserved chopped salmon. Cover eggs and refrigerate up to 4 hours. Just before serving, garnish with dill sprigs. Makes 20 servings.

• “Want to keep your pants from creas-ing on the hanger? Grab an empty pa-per-towel tube, and slit it down the side. When you slip it over the bottom of the
hanger, it creates a wide curve for the pants to lie across, and no more crease!” -- M.U. in Colorado

• Just in time for soup season (and my new year’s resolutions), here’s a great fat swap: Drain and rinse two cups of white beans and puree with a cup of no-sodium vegetable broth. You can use this as a thickener in place of heavy cream for soups and stews. -- JoAnn
• Experts say that those who keep track of their nutrition and exercise are more likely to keep it up. This can be as simple as a pencil and notebook paired with a calorie guidebook, or one
of the many great apps for your smartphone. In any case, set yourself up for success this year. You deserve it!
• “Cutting corn off the cob can be tricky business, but you only need to recruit the right equipment. The next time you’re making corn for dinner, grab a Bundt pan. The corn cob gets set upright in the center, and when you cut down, the kernels fall right into the pan on all sides.” -- A.S. in Texas

• On Jan. 9, 1768, in London, Englishman Philip Astley stages the first modern circus. Astley, a former cavalry sergeant major, found that if he galloped in a tight circle, centrifugal force allowed him to perform seemingly impossible feats on a horse’s back.
• On Jan. 6, 1838, Samuel Morse’s telegraph system is demonstrated for the first time in New Jersey. The telegraph, a device that used electric impulses to transmit encoded mes-sages over a wire, would eventually revolutionize long-distance communication.
• On Jan. 11, 1908, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declares the massive Grand Canyon in northwestern Arizona a national monument. Congress did not officially outlaw private development in the Grand Canyon until 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Grand Canyon National Park Act.
• On Jan. 7, 1929, Walter Chrysler, the founder of the Chrysler Corporation, one of America’s Big Three automakers, is featured on the cover of Time magazine as its Man of the Year. In 1928, his
company had acquired the Dodge Brothers Company, thereby becoming the world’s third-largest automaker.
• On Jan. 5, 1933, construction begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers start excavating 3.25 million cubic feet of dirt for the structure’s huge anchorages. The Golden Gate Bridge officially opened on May 27, 1937, the longest bridge span in the world at the time.
• On Jan. 8, 1946, Elvis Presley receives his first guitar. Competing versions of the story say that what Presley really wanted for his birthday was a rifle or a bicycle. Instead, his mother took him to the Tupelo Hardware Store and bought a $6.95 guitar.
• On Jan. 10, 1976, “Convoy,” by C.W. McCall, is the No. 1 song on the U.S. pop charts. “Convoy” fueled the trucking/CB-radio craze that had millions of Americans creating “handles” for themselves -- Rubber Duck, Pink Lady, Scooter Pie, etc. -- and daydreaming about the glamorous life of the long-haul trucker. Hollywood responded with a parade of related works, including “Smokey and the Bandit” (1977).
