Q: Every year I have to deal with brown and dying grass, because the climate we live in gets so hot in the late summer. We also have water restrictions to deal with. How can I keep my lawn healthy? -- Bryan in Norcross, Ga.

A: Dealing with watering restrictions and drought condi-tions has become a regular way of life in many Southern states, and it’s especially difficult for homeowners who want a green, lush lawn during a prime time of year for outdoor parties and

• It was notorious Irish writer (and noted wit) Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “Some cause hap-

piness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.” • Something to think about before you make your

next call: Those who study such things say that cell-phones harbor more bacteria than the toilet handles in a public restroom.

• The first private bathrooms on record date back to 8,000 B.C. Archaeologists on the Scottish island of Orkney have found the remains of stone huts built on a drainage system that emptied into a nearby stream.

• If you’ve ever seen bears groggily emerge from hibernation in the springtime, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that a group of them is collectively known as a sloth of bears. (They’re also sometimes called a sleuth of bears, though the reasons for that are not obvious, as bear detectives seem somewhat improbable.)

• A lightning bolt is five times hotter than the sur-face of the sun.

• In the 1950s it was possible to buy a child’s atomic laboratory set. The U-238 Atomic Energy Set, mar-keted by the A.C. Gilbert Company, included low-level radioactive sources, uranium-bearing ore and a radiation gauge.

Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyHey everyone!Welcome to the First Edition of Volume

3 of Tidbits of the Lake Area! Thank you so much for picking up Tidbits and enjoying it! We can hardly believe this is already our

third year of bringing our fun, free and family-friendly publication to you!

Time seems to either be a friend or enemy in most cas-es. For me this week... well, a toss up I guess. I did manage to get back to that space I call the garage and make some more headway on the big "fall cleaning" this past week. I can't say it is done, but I can

say I have way more floor space than I used to... it's almost like you could park a car in there if you wanted... hmm, what a concept!

Thanks for reading the issue of Tidbits of the Lake Area, Lynette and I appreciate it very much! Keep watching for those school kids, and take care we'll see you next issue!!

• Frugal doesn’t have to mean unfashionable. There are plenty of how-to instructions on the Internet for turning fashion trash into treasure. For starters, try searching how to turn an old T-shirt into a skirt with a minimum of fuss, then explore sites like Pinterest and Instructables.com for more projects. -- JoAnn

• Want a fun way to save? Pick a particular currency item (maybe a $5 bill or dimes) and every time you get one, put it in a jar. See how much you save in a month doing this. See

how long you can go without missing the money.

• “To clean a vase with an impossibly skinny neck, try adding a scoop of rice to the vase with a little hot water and dish soap. Shake to scrub.” -- M.M. in Indiana

• A better use for soda: Use it to scrub your pots and pans. If you have grime and slime, try letting the acids in soda pop work it out for you. Pour enough soda to cover the bot-tom of the pots or pans and let soak for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub away.

• “When the weather starts to dry out, and my skin along with it, I turn to coconut oil. I keep a jar in the bathroom, and I apply it even before I get out of the shower. My skin gets re-

ally red and torn up otherwise. I thought this might help others, too.” -- K.S. in Massachusetts

• When choosing an airline seat, you should know that you’ll feel less turbulence at the front of the cabin. Exit rows have more legroom, but they tend to be colder as well. Sound carries forward, so if you don’t want to be bothered by the little ones or random chatter, sit toward the back.

Q: My son found some old bottles in a creek bed near our home. Most are soda-pop bottles, including Five-O, Quality, Dur and two early Coca-Colas. What can you tell me about them? -- Margretta, Centralia, Ill.

A: One of the better references is “Soda Pop Collectibles Price Guide: The Encyclopedia of Soda Pop Collectibles” by Allan Petretti and pub-lished by Krause Books. Petretti is one of the country’s foremost experts on soda-pop memorabilia, and his book features thousands of illustra-tions documenting bottles and products from soda pop producers both big and small. This might be a good place for you to begin.

This guide is updated periodically, so prices seem to accurately reflect the marketplace. It can be ordered directly from the publisher: Krause Books, 700 East State St., Iola, WI 54990; and 888-457-2873.

A: The California Raisins figurines, which were given away as pre-miums by Hardee’s, pop up more often on the East Coast and in the South, since that is where most of the restaurants in the chain were located. I checked several price guides and believe the four Califor-nia Raisins figurines you have are worth about $5 each. Incidentally, Hardee’s issued a second series and eventually a third and final se-ries.

• • •Q: I have a copy of “Heidi,” a Windermere Reader School edition

from 1954. It is in excellent condition. Could it be worth anything? -- Amelia, West Warwick, R.I.

A: I found a copy of your book at www.abe.com for $5. This is an excellent website that lists books by title and dealers offering them for sale. When using it, make certain you search for the right publisher and edition.

• • •Q: I have several Hummel’s in the Christmas Bell series. How can

I determine values? -- Beth, Hammond, La.A: According to “The Official M.J. Hummel Price Guide” by Heidi

Ann Von Recklinghausen and published by Krause Books, the Christ-mas Bell series was introduced in 1989. From that first issue through 2000, this guide claims the bells are worth about $30 each.
