One of the best things we seniors can do for our overall health is walk for exercise. But it takes a little planning to get the full benefits. There are two things you’ll want to consider before you get started.Shoes: The more important part of your workout gear is the shoes you wear. These carry all our weight, and the wrong ones can lead to pain and injury. Street shoes or sandals are the worst culprits. Although you can buy shoes made specifically for walking, your best bet is running shoes. If a shoe can take the pounding that running brings, it’ll be more than adequate for walking.Get fitted for your shoes at an athletic shoe store. Tell the salesperson about any stability problems you might have, as there are shoes made for that. (It’s especially important if you’re going to be walking on sidewalks, where the surface isn’t as perfect as an indoor mall or gym track.) Wear the same type of socks for

your fitting as you’ll wear for walking. Make sure the shoe is flexible, and walk around the store to check for comfort.Pedometer: It’s said that 10,000 is the number of steps we should take daily for weight loss, and 6,000 steps for maintaining health. Pedometers are little gadgets that clip to your waistband and count your steps. Some of them are electronic, and some work via tiny springs inside that sense your body’s movements. All adjust to your stride length (you program it to match your individual distance between steps) and calculate how far you’ve walked. Use the buddy system, or walk with a group, for safety. But most of all, have fun. Walking, or any exercise, is great for releasing endorphins and adding to our sense of well-being.Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Young Collie Obsessed With Animal DroppingsBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a lot of nature and wildlife surrounding our property, and much of that wildlife crosses through our yard and leaves “pellets” behind — deer, skunk, fox, coyote and so on. Our 7-month-old bearded Collie, “Jesse,” is uncontrollably attracted to these pellets and eats them. How do I stop this behavior? — Cindy K., Clinton Township, Mich.

DEAR CINDY: Stopping Jessie from eating those wildlife pellets (droppings, really) is indeed difficult. Dogs instinctively seek out unusual odors and often lick or eat other animals’ droppings as part of this behavior — after all, droppings can smell quite strong.

The most effective way to control Jesse’s behavior is to remove the source of the problem — that is, the droppings themselves. This means combing through the property prior to letting Jesse out, and picking up and disposing of all droppings.

That can be pretty labor-intensive, not to mention having Jesse go nuts watching you walk around the yard while he’s stuck inside. Another option

is to fence off a portion of the yard big enough for Jesse to run around, while keeping wildlife out.

A third option is to put Jesse on a leash when you take him out, so you can keep him away from the wildlife droppings.

You may be able to combine a couple of methods. In addition to regularly cleaning up the droppings, take Jesse out on a leash and have him “go” in roughly the same area every day. He’ll soon associate this area as his elimination spot. Afterward, spend some time with him on basic obedience (sit, stay, heel) and walk him around the yard on his leash. When he darts out to sniff a dropping or other spot, give him a firm “come!” or “heel!” and, when he returns to your side, a small treat. In short, make obeying you more rewarding than exploring droppings.

Thought of the Week“The telling of jokes is an art of its own, and

it always rises from some emotional threat. The best jokes are dangerous, and dangerous

because they are in some way truthful.” — Kurt Vonnegut

z It was beloved American comedian and actor Bob Hope who made the following extremely sage observation: “People who throw kisses are hopelessly lazy.”z Next time you’re in Tinseltown, remember that it is unlawful to herd more than 3,000 sheep at a time down Hollywood Boulevard.z In the naming of American states, there a quite a few that never quite made it. It’s interesting to speculate about the possibilities, though. For instance, if you currently reside in the state of Kentucky or parts of Tennessee, but for the whimsy of fate you could be a Transylvanian. Some people once wanted to take parts of Texas and Oklahoma to create the great state of Texlahoma (perhaps displaying a slight lack of imagination). When the Mormon church settled out west, Brigham Young petitioned to have the

state of Deseret created, and the land he suggested make up the state included present-day Utah, almost all of Nevada and Arizona, a sizable chunk of California and bits of five other states. Long Island, in New York, even had designs on statehood at one time.z In the 19th century, ice accounted for more shipping than any other commodity except cotton.z William Howard Taft, the 18th president of the United States, was a large man. Quite a large man. In fact, he was so large that his 300-pound bulk got stuck in a White House bathtub, and he had to summon help to extricate himself.z The French town of Versailles was originally built solely to house the staff of the extravagant palace.

NAME ORIGINS (continued):F Brothers Henry, Hilal, and Herman Hassenfeld were the founders of the world’s second-largest toymakers. Hasbro got its start in 1923 when these Polish immigrants started selling school supplies. In the late 1930s, they made the switch to toys, beginning with junior doctor and nurse kits and modeling clay. Today we know them for Mr. Potato Head, G.I. Joe and Transformers.F In 1927, a factory in Gothenburg, Sweden, rolled out its first automobile, christened the Volvo. The name came from the Latin, meaning, “I roll.” Eighty years later, the company had produced nearly 15 million vehicles.F The big business of athletic shoes has some interesting brand name origins. Adidas shoes draw their name from their founder Adolf “Adi” Dassler, who founded the company in 1949. NIKE is the winged goddess of victory in Greek mythology, and its famous swoop is said to resemble the wing of that goddess. ASICS uses an acronym of a Latin phrase Anima sana in corpore sano, which translates to, “A sound mind in a sound body” to label their footwear. The speed of an African antelope, the rhebok, was the inspiration behind Reebok’s company name.F The name of German Henri Nestlé is synonymous with good chocolate, but the world’s first baby formula was actually his first creation in 1867. Nestlé didn’t get into the chocolate-making business until 1929, when he acquired a Swiss chocolate company. The company logo is the original Nestlé family coat of arms, which features a bird’s nest containing a mother bird and two baby birds.F Louis Chevrolet was a Swiss auto racer who went into partnership with William Durant in 1911 to

produce automobiles. Chevrolet had already been in the news as a frequent race winner, driving his Buick up to 72 miles per hour. He wanted to build a luxury car, while Durant’s idea was to produce inexpensive cars to compete with the Ford Model T. Chevrolet won the debate and lent his name to the Classic Six. However, a few years later, while Chevrolet was on a European vacation, Durant implemented changes for a smaller car. Upon Chevrolet’s return to Michigan, the two men’s dispute grew, and Chevrolet sold out his shares and left the company. Durant went on to control General Motors, acting as its president until 1920.F Fiats have been around since 1899 when the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (translation: Italian Automobile Factory of Turin) was founded. The company built its first factory in the United States in 1908.F What ever happened to Datsun vehicles? They were taken over by Nippon Sangyo, which translates to “Japan Industries.” Nissan is an abbreviated version of Nippon Sangyo. F Two former electrical engineering students at Stanford University are responsible for the search engine Yahoo, used by millions every day. David Filo and Jerry Yang initially called their site “Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web,” but later selected an acronym for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle.” The two also like the definition of a yahoo: “rude, unsophisticated, and uncouth.” F The computer coding used to write web pages, “HTML,” was the source for the name of one of the nation’s most popular e-mail sites. Its creators incorporated the four computer language letters into the service HoTMaiL in 1996, and within five months, had more than eight million subscribers. Just a year

later, the founders received a cool $400 million from Microsoft to be added to its list of services. F Jesse Shwayder founded the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company in 1910 in Denver, Colorado. Touting his reputation as the maker of strong luggage, he named one of his suitcases the “Samson” after the Biblical personage endowed with tremendous strength by God. The company name was eventually changed to Samsonite, and it ran an ad campaign flaunting the fact that their hard-sided luggage was “hard enough to stand on.” F A character in an 1851 novel was the inspiration for the name of the world’s largest coffeehouse. Captain Ahab’s first mate in Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” was named Starbuck. The chain started out with one location in Seattle’s Pike Street Market in 1971 and has grown to more than 16,000 outlets throughout the world.

Ryan Newman, who hadn’t won since the 2008 Daytona 500, put his No. 39 Chevrolet in victory lane for the first time by

winning at Phoenix International Raceway.Newman’s first 13 Sprint Cup victories occurred at Penske Racing. He moved to Stewart Haas Racing in 2009 and made the Chase in his first year as Tony Stewart’s teammate, but the Subway Fresh Fit 600 marked his first victory with the team.In 2002, Newman was named Raybestos Rookie of the Year ... over Jimmie Johnson, who has won the past four championships. But the Phoenix victory came at the expense of Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jeff Gordon. Gordon spun the wheels on his No. 24 on the final restart, enabling Newman to pull away.“It was a long time coming for me,” said Newman. “The emotional part, when I first started in the series, it just came easy. I was with a great team, had a great crew chief, great pit stops, all those things just kind of came easy to me, and then, as it got toward 2005, we got to struggling a little bit.

I got a win here or there, but it was not dominant like we were back in 2002 and 2003.“I wanted to get that first victory for our team and for No. 39 and these guys at Stewart Haas Racing who had never been to any victory in any series.”To add a bit of historical trivia, Newman’s was

INTEREST-ONLY MORTgAgESThere are those who say that interest-only mortgages are the main reason for the housing market’s problems in recent years. Loans were given fast and loose, with many purchasers barely qualifying for the interest portion, never mind the principal when it was added in. Still, interest-only mortgage loans are still out there, and purchasers will sign up for them. On paper, an interest-only mortgage looks enticing: The first years offer a significantly lower monthly payment, especially if you’re only going to keep your home for a few years. But Freddie Mac might think there are clouds on the horizon.Freddie Mac (the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation) was charted by Congress in 1970 as a means of providing stability in residential mortgage markets, especially for low- and moderate-income buyers. It props up the market by providing capital to lenders. It can be taken as something of a warning that Freddie Mac recently announced that later this year, in September, it will stop purchasing interest-only mortgages. Not only will there be fewer choices in obtaining a mortgage, the message itself is rather grim. Part of the decision, it seems, is that while Freddie Mac saw an increase in defaulted and delinquent mortgages during the past few years, the decision to end those mortgages completely seems to say that it doesn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel — and is bailing out completely. That’s not to say buyers won’t be able to get an interest-only loan, just that it will be tougher to find. Getting a loan is likely to be difficult, but not impossible, with borrowers needing to qualify at the full (interest plus principal) mortgage amount. There are other types of mortgages to consider:• Fixed-rate mortgage. These are the safest mortgages because your monthly payment will be stable for the life of the loan. The only things that could go up are the insurance and property-tax portions. With insurance, you have the opportunity to shop around.• Biweekly mortgages. You make half of your mortgage payment every two weeks. At the end of the year, you will have made 13 months’ of payments instead of 12. The mortgage gets paid off earlier because of the extra payment each year. Before you decide on an interest-only mortgage, run the numbers and see what they look like at www.mortgagecalculator.org.

Car owners can increase fuel efficiency just by slowing down. Cutting mph from 70 to 55 could net a 23 percent improvement. A clogged air filter decreases efficiency by as much as 10 percent, and properly inflated tires can boost it by more than 3 percent.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’m beginning to get little knobs on my finger joints. I believe this is arthritis, and I have seen it in the advanced stages. What can I do to prevent it from getting worse? — Anon.ANSWER: The knobs on the finger joints below the fingernail are Heberden’s nodes, named after an English doctor who died at the start of the 19th century. Knobs on the middle finger joints are Bouchard’s nodes, named after a French doctor who died in the early years of the 20th century. Both of these knobs are signs of osteoarthritis — the common kind of arthritis, the kind that most seniors have at least a touch of. They’re similar to bone spurs seen on backbones and other bones, another consequence of osteoarthritis.Osteoarthritis comes from fraying of the cushioning cartilage inside joints. How extensive or how incapacitating it will be is unpredictable. Most people manage to get along in spite of it. However, it can be a great burden to others. There is no preventive medicine to stop osteoarthritis in its tracks. It has a predilection for the fingers, hips, knees and spine. Should it strike larger joints like hips, knees and backbones, muscle strengthening will serve you well.

Strong muscles protect joints. The exercise should not be so vigorous that it causes pain, but it should be vigorous enough to encourage strength building. Being overweight increases the stress on knees and hips, so you should strive to stay on the lean side. Many people swear to the effectiveness of chondroitin and glucosamine, both of which are available without a prescription, and often they come in combination. Not a lot of evidence exists to endorse them wholeheartedly, but if you want to give them a try, they won’t hurt you.The arthritis booklet deals with osteoarthritis, also called degenerative arthritis. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 301W, Box 536475 Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
