Vatican Notes: General Intention: For the terminally ill, that in their

sufferings they may be sustained by faith in God and by the love of

others. Missionary Intention: That the celebration of World Mission

Sunday may increase in the People of God the passion for

evangelization and the support of missionary activity through prayer and

economic aid for the poorest Churches... Arriving in Scotland on the

first leg of a four-day visit to Great Britain (see photo at left), Pope

Benedict XVI appealed for preservation of the country's long

Christian tradition and warned against "aggressive" forms of

secularism and atheism. "Your forefathers' respect for truth and justice,

for mercy and charity come to you from a faith that remains a mighty

force for good in your kingdom, to the great benefit of Christians and

non-Christians alike," the pope said Sept. 16 at a reception with Queen

Elizabeth II and more than 400 distinguished guests at Holyroodhouse in

Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. The pope evoked the moral heroism of a

long line of British figures, from Florence Nightingale to Cardinal John

Henry Newman, whom the pope was to beatify during the visit.

Christian witness was also evident during World War II against a "Nazi

tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society," he said. "As we

reflect on the sobering lessons of the atheist extremism of the 20th

century, let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and virtue

from public life leads ultimately to a truncated vision of man and of

society," he said (CNS)...Benedict XVI on September 22 reflected on

the benefits of friendship with Jesus, noting concrete consequences

of this relationship with Christ. The Pope made this reflection at the

end of the general audience in Vatican when he offered his customary

greeting to youth, the sick and newlyweds. "May friendship with Jesus,

dear young people, be for you a font of joy and a reason to carry

out challenging decisions," he said. The Holy Father added: "For those of

you who are sick, may this friendship give you comfort in difficult

moments and infuse serenity into body and spirit. "Dear newlyweds, in

the light of friendship with Jesus, strive to correspond to your vocation

with reciprocal love, in openness to life and in Christian witness."

(zenit.org)…Benedict XVI is pointing to the example of a newly

beatified Capuchin friar whose life was a "chant of humility and trust in God." The Pope spoke on September 12 about Leopoldo Sánchez

Márquez de Alpandeire (born Francisco), (see photo at left) a Spanish professed layman of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins who was beatified

that same day in Granada, Spain."I rejoice with the Franciscan family who is seeing this brother of theirs added to the numerous ranks of their saints and blessed," the Pontiff said in an address after praying the midday

Angelus in Castel Gandolfo. The Holy Father took the opportunity to send a greeting to the 60,000 pilgrims gathered at Granada's Armilla Air Base for the ceremony. Speaking in Spanish, Benedict XVI acknowledged that "the

life of this simple and austere Capuchin religious is a chant to humility and trust in God, and a luminous model of devotion to the Most Holy Virgin

Mary." Hence, the Pope invited "all, following the example of the new blessed, to serve the Lord with a sincere heart, so that we are able to experience his immense love for us, which makes it possible for us to love

all men without exception." (zenit.org)
