BRO MEL TALKS ON PARENTHOOD
Bro Mel B Libre, Lead Servant of TawagAwit,
addressed about 250 participants of the Father’s Day
event dubbed as “A Celebration of Parenthood for
Today’s Family” held on September 3 in Our Lady of
Assumption Parish Hall, Onehunga.
He narrated about the struggles that his family went through like
most migrants, “seeking employment, attending to our growing
children, adjusting to a more liberal society, and finding meaning
in life.”
He said that “(a) father is stereotyped as the disciplinarian, the
decision-maker; and rightly so, but fatherhood is most importantly
relating with the children…With children becoming influenced by
information in the internet and media, with children pressured by
peers in school, with children given more freedom and
independence by the government, it is important for a father to
connect to his children, through small talk, through shared
activities, through praying together.”
The other speakers were accountant Ado Flores and lawyer Paulo
Garcia. During the Question & Answer Portion, Bro Mel was
asked on what advice he would give to fellow fathers, and his
response was: “Love your wife; Lead by example; and Be
prayerful.”
Other highlights in the program were the recognition of Super
Dads and the inspirational talk of Fr. Ruben Elago, of the
Auckland Catholic Filipino Chaplaincy, on the "Parenthood on a
Spiritual Note".
The event was organized by the NZ-Filipino Sto Nino Devotees
New Zealand Trust.

Vatican Notes: October 2011 Pope’s General Intention: That the terminally ill may be supported by their faith in God and the love of their
brothers and sisters. Missionary Intention: That the celebration of World Mission Day may foster in the People of God a passion for evangelization
with the willingness to support the missions with prayer and economic aid
for the poorest Churches.... Pope Benedict XVI is asking media
professionals and viewers, listeners and readers to set aside a
bit of time for silence. Announcing that the pope had chosen "Silence
and Word: Path of Evangelization" as the theme for World
Communications Day 2012, the Vatican acknowledged it initially might
appear strange to ask professional wordsmiths to focus on silence, but it
said silence is essential for really processing the words people hear or
read. The Catholic celebration of World Communications Day is marked
in most dioceses on the Sunday before Pentecost, which in 2012 will be
May 20. A papal message for the occasion usually is released on the
feast of St. Francis de Sales, patron of writers, Jan. 24. The Pontifical
Council for Social Communications, which coordinates the observance,
said that in the pope's thinking, "silence is not presented simply as an
antidote to the constant and unstoppable flow of information that
characterizes society today, but rather as a factor that is necessary for its
integration." Silence, the council said, favors discernment and reflection.
Particularly when talking about the word of God, silence is an
indispensable part of welcoming the message the word is
communicating, it said…Pope Benedict XVI said he was happy to
see that "the faith in my German homeland has a young face,
is alive and has a future." At his weekly general audience Sept. 28
in St. Peter's Square, the pope told an estimated 10,000 pilgrims and
visitors about his trip Sept. 22-25 to Germany. In his audience talk, the
pope said his trip was a true "festival of faith," and his liturgies and
Masses, meetings with public officials, other Christians and Jewish and
Muslim representatives "helped us see once again how it's God who
gives the deepest meaning and true fullness to our lives; in fact, he alone
gives us, gives everyone, a future"… Believers in God have a
contribution to make toward building a better world marked
by respect for each human being, Pope Benedict XVI told
representatives of Germany's Muslim communities. “As
believers, setting out from our respect convictions, we can offer an
important witness in many key areas of life in society," including "the
protection of the family based on marriage, respect for life in every
phase of its natural course or the promotion of greater social justice," the
pope said. He met Sept. 23 with 15 Muslim representatives -- men and
women -- in a small meeting room at the apostolic nunciature in Berlin.
While real differences exist between Muslims and Christians, he said,
mutual respect exists and grows where believers meet one another and
work together to promote and protect the dignity of each human being
and other basic ethical values. (Taken from Catholic News Service)
