WHO IS THE TASMANIANMINERALS & ENERGY COUNCIL (TMEC)The mission of the Tasmanian Minerals and Energy Council is to promote the development of a sustainable exploration, mining, industrial and advanced manufacturing sector which operates within community expectations.

The Council is the representative organisation for the exploration, mining and mineral processing, advanced manufacturing and energy intensive industry sectors, along with companies and individuals in the associated supply chains.

TMEC represents the key industries in Tasmania – including all of the large mining companies, the key downstream processors such as Bell Bay Aluminium, Temco, Nyrstar and Norske Skog, and diverse industrials such as the Elphinstone Group and Simplot. The great majority of these companies are regionally based rather than capital city centric, and accordingly provide considerable value to the regional areas in which they operate.

TMEC represents the views of the industry on a range of issues to Government - State and Federal, Non-Government Organisations and the public.

The Council is administered by a board of directors, drawn in proportion from the various membership categories. There are also a number of associate committees which attend to strategic priorities such as land access, efficient approvals process, energy, occupational health and safety, sustainable development, emergency response, advanced manufacturing, community engagement and freight.

WHAT IS AN ADVANCEDMANUFACTURER?The Department of State Growth’s Advanced Manufacturing Action Plan defines advanced manufacturing as - “Those manufacturing businesses that utilise continuous improvement, enhanced skills, new technologies, and design and systems integration in order to drive innovation and growth throughout the value chain.” “Advanced manufacturers ensure that customers receive the best quality, cost and delivery (QCD) in products and services. Small to medium advanced manufacturers aim to deliver high value, niche and customised premium products and services in low to medium value supply chains.”

WHY HAS THE TMEC ADVANCED MANUFACTURING COMMITTEE BEEN ESTABLISHED?On 19th May 2015, the Department of State Growth led an Advanced Manufacturing Summit in Burnie. More than 140 attendees from industry, peak bodies and government, met to discuss Tasmania’s industry needs to be supported to collaborate, invest and innovate in order to leverage new opportunities and then to remain competitive in interstate and international markets.

One of the key outcomes from the Summit was a commitment from the Tasmanian Government to facilitate developing and formalising a new Tasmanian Advanced Manufacturing Strategy. The cornerstone of this strategy is to enable industry to invest in advanced manufacturing processes so that they can leverage new opportunities in interstate and international markets.

The TMEC Advanced Manufacturing Advisory Committee (AMAC) has been established to ensure the successful implementation of the Advanced Manufacturing Action Plan.

An industry that is cohesive, collaborative and cooperative will benefit not only the individual members, but the State of Tasmania.

WHO IS REPRESENTED ON THE ADVANCED MANUFACTURING COMMITTEE?The establishing committee members have been selected from a broad range of manufacturing sectors across all three regions (North, South and North West).

While we recognise that not all manufacturers are yet “advanced” manufacturers, our aim is to help bring all manufacturers along for the journey by providing a forum for networking, collaboration and building connections and relationships within the sector.
