Justification of Activity Chosen

Language is always fun to learn but children these days are afraid to enter language

classes especially the English class due to poor command or formality basis. Teachers

should be creative enough to attract young learners to learn language by providing a

non-threatening atmosphere. Stories are a dynamic platform to learn language as it is

not just winning and completing the challenges but they are learning grammar and

vocabulary as an entertainment rather than fleeing away from the class. Different types

of genre of stories allow a teacher to be talented to use the stories creatively and

effectively in English classrooms.

The activity is constructed around a sequence of events. Students gain a deeper

understanding of the story by retelling the proper order of important event in stories,

describing cause and effect relationships and how the events effect the central meaning

of the story. Knowing the sequence of events in a story helps us to picture what is

happening and when. It helps make the story clear and easy to follow. When events are

not in order, the story become blurry and hard to follow. Besides that, it helps to

incorporate higher order thingking skills among students. It is not just teach vocabulary

and grammar but at the same time they also boost attention skills, critical thinking skills,

and independent learning skills. It is because students need to recall the story and at the

same time it incorporate thinking skills in students. In the activity, they can discuss

among themselves and arrange the picture cards according to the sequences. They will

think of what happens next, what is the ending of the story and the others.

Sequencing is not a natural skill, and many young children recall stories and

episodes, not so much through the sequence of important events, but through a

collection of salient features that seemed relevant or interesting to the student. This

activity is learner-centred and innovative. It is because students that have been chosen

will go to the front and get the picture cards from teacher. Students will be given time to

discuss among themselves and arrange the picture cards according to the sequences.

Lastly, they need to build a sentence based on the pictures. As we can see, there is no

teacher- centred in this activity.

In addition, this activity will gain confidence of students in using the language. In this

activity, they are required to make a sentence by themselves. Besides, students use

their own creativity to build the sentences based on the pictures as the students feel free

to use language to build the sentence, not necessary need bombastic language but as

long as the sentence is simple and understandable. Teacher may guide them if they are

using the wrong words. Students can learn faster if they learn from mistakes. Another

thing is when the child thinks he/she has the correct order, have him or her to make a

sentence. If the pictures are in wrong position, tell the child why it does not make sense

and have them to rearrange the sequences. The students will gain their confidence in

learning.

Apart from that, according to the content standard of the primary English language

curriculum standard document, by the end of the 6-year primary schooling, pupils will be

able to plan, organize and produce creative works for enjoyment. According to the

learning standard, through this story, it can fulfill the objective as they are able to take

part with guidance based on stories which stated in the learning standards of the primary

English language curriculum standard document 4.3.2.

By using stories not only can make the lesson more interesting, students also will

enjoy and really can learn something from it. Although it is a very good way implement

the stories into the lesson, but we need to know which stories are suitable to the children

very important in choosing the stories. This is a very important aspect because if we

choose a story that is not suitable to children, children will have tendency to lose interest

toward learning the language. So, as a teacher, I need to keep in mind that I need justify

the suitability of the story that I am going to use in the lesson in future.
