4) President’s Report John Grant, Chair of the Foundation made the following report:

The Foundation’s financial performance was, and continues to be affected by the adverse movements of the Australian sharemarket. However I would like to thank the dedication of the Foundation’s Investment Committee for their commitment to managing the Foundation’s assets always with the School’s best interest in mind. Over the past year we have been pleased with the level of donations in a tough economic environment, and we have been particularly pleased with the amount raised to renovate the Memorial Hall. This important work can now commence and we look forward to the improvements.


Over this year, the Foundation Board also passed a resolutions enabling a loan to the School for the specific purpose of purchasing new boys boarding furniture for all boy boarders. This was viewed as an essential and exciting project given the existing furniture is 15 years old and looking very tired. We look forward to hearing of the progress of this project throughout the course of 2016.

Also I would like to acknowledge Mr Simon Paul and Mrs Angela Soul who resigned from the Board over the year, and thank them for their service. I also offer a very warm welcome to Mrs Fiona Nash who will be joining us as a Director from today.

5) To Receive, Consider and Approve the Financial Statements

Paul Cornal addressed the AGM and made the following points:• The TAS Foundation financial results were well prepared with no issue and thanks and recognition must be extended to the TAS finance team for their excellent work.• The biggest financial issue for the Foundation is the same that has affected many Australian organistions and families; the fall in the Australian sharemarket and the subsequent lowering of the asset base. It is important to recognise these are not realised losses; simply the mark-to-market lowering of the as set’s value.• Cash flow for the Foundation continues to be positive.• The Foundation’s balance sheet remains very strong to support the School and its objectives• It is also important to note that the scholarships and bursaries paid to the School from the Foundation are not digging into the capital but are possible from the returns on investment and direct donations.

Motion That the Financial statements and the Auditor’s report be received.

6) Adoption of a new Foundation Constitution John Grant thanked Sebastian Hempel for the enormous amount of work he has done on making the necessary changes to the Constitution, which is now 31 years old and required some modification.

The TAS Board approved the amendments to the Foundation Constitution at their Board meeting today – Friday 27 May 2016.

Sebastian Hempel spoke to the assembled Foundation Members about the proposed changes to the Foun-dation’s Constitution that were all listed in the Notice Of Meeting sent to Foundation members. The proposed changes includes:

Amendments to the Membership Levels for cash gifts and donations to the following:• Member $2,000• Fellow $10,000• Trustee $50,000• Patron $500,000


Amendments to the Membership Levels for bequests to the following• Member $4,000• Fellow $20,000• Trustee $100,000

It was explained that these changes do not affect existing members nor their current membership levels, which will be maintained as is. There were many discussions about the new membership levels at Foundation Board meetings over the past year with comparisons to other schools’ Foundation membership levels and an under-standing that the proposed amounts now needed for Membership were reasonable to bring the Constitution into the 21st century.

No questions or comments were made from the floor.

8) General BusinessMr Murray Guest, Headmaster addressed the meeting and made the following points:Enormous gratitude to the Foundation and the Foundation Board for their financial support and all the work they have done for the School over the past year. Their contribution is so important to TAS and should not be underestimated by anyone.

The financing of projects that the School could not possibly undertake is invaluable as is the building of commu-nity and the promotion of the Foundation as a source of essential gift giving.At this stage in the School’s development, where the move to co-education and the focus on growth and devel-opment are key; the role of the Foundation will become more important than it has ever been.There has never been a time in the School’s history when the call upon the Foundation for support has ever been as crucial. We are very aware that the plans the School has for the future are intrinsically linked with the TAS Foundation.

In addition, thanks to Cressida for the job she has done over the past 8 years, for her dedication and commit-ment to the School and the Foundation. The fact that the Foundation goes from strength to strength is due to her reaching out to the whole community.

Foundation President’s Report 2016

The past year has been one of enormous significance for TAS and all its associated community groups like the TAS Foundation, as the school transitioned from single sex to full co-education. As the numbers of interested families wanting to enrol at TAS grew throughout the year, accommodating a larger school population became the unanticipated focal point for much of the Foundation’s decision making. The growth in student numbers as a result of co-education exceeded expectations and meant decisions related to the expansion of the campus had to be made sooner than anticipated.

Given the Foundation’s core business of ensuring the enduring financial stability of the School through the provision of scholarships and bursaries as well as building and campus development, the inclusion of the Foundation Board in the School’s strategic Master Planning process this year was important.


The Master Plan was commissioned by the TAS Board to address the future building needs and priorities as student and staff numbers grow. The most pressing need identified in this process was for girls’ boarding accommodation and in this project the Foundation’s contribution was essential.

The funding needed for the school to embark upon this crucial new boarding house is not possible under the School’s current ordinance restrictions, so using the Foundation’s assets as collateral, the necessary loan agreements between Regional Australia Bank, the School and the Foundation was completed by the end of the year. This will ensure TAS will have the necessary funds to complete the new boarding house by the start of 2018.

This year was also marked significantly for the TAS Foundation by the death of Jim Graham who, with Headmaster Alan Cash, TAS staff and parents launched the TAS Foundation over 30 years ago. While his death was not unanticipated, the community was once again reminded of the contribution this remarkable man made upon TAS in so many ways. The Foundation was honoured to pay tribute to him with a concert at the end of the year that celebrated his legacy to the School with performers from all ages and across all genres performing together on the Hoskins stage. While it was a fundraising event for the Jim Graham Scholarship, the true power of the evening rested on the unity of the broader TAS community.

In addition to this activity, the usual programs of fund raising, relationship development and events all took place in the hope that the pattern of philanthropy will continue to grow. Essential to the success of the Foundation is the generosity of the community and in this I would like to thank all our donors for their contributions. My thanks are extended in particular to the dedication of the Foundation Board Directors, for their time, energy and leadership.
