During the Second World War Poland found itself under German and Soviet occupaon. Polish
people, however, did not stop fighng. Already in 1939 conspiratorial groups were formed, that in 1942
adopted the name of the Naonal Army. It was the largest of the conspiratorial European organizaons.
Besides armed acons against the occupant equally important were reconnaissance acons, consisted
of gaining and transferring materials about locaon, moves and intenons of the enemy, to the
headquarters.
One of the elements proving the efficiency of the intelligence network of the Polish
underground state was the daily efforts by hundreds of people-couriers, who for many days with constant
exposure of life, wandered throughout whole of Europe, carrying small but important parcels. This was
informaon about the number of German troops transferred to parcular secons of the front line,
or reports from the armaments factories, and also relaons of the situaon in concentraon camps.
Courier’s acvity of the Polish underground state was twofold. On the one hand they dealt with
spread of informaon from occupied territories, useful for conducng the war against the enemies
of Poland; on the other hand they helped with transferring people from the Polish territory, threatened
with arrest or death, to a safe place.
This second form of acvity had a parcularly wide range on pre-war Southern borderland
of our homeland. In the wide belt of the Beskydy and the Carpathians connued the movement of people
crossing the border, either of life threatening or freedom reasons by the occupying regimes, as well as the
desire to fight the occupying forces in the ranks of the regular army in western Europe.
One of the centers of courier’s acvity was in Nowy Sącz. From there, couriers set out towards
the Slovakian border, and connued through Hungary to Budapest. The most famous couriers were:
Zbigniew Ryś, Jan Freisler, Klemens Gucwa, Franciszek Krzyżak, Leopold Kwiatkowski i Roman Stramek.
During the war, the intelligence of the underground state gave the Western Allies more than
25,000 reports. These included informaon about the locaon and movement of German units; also the
equipment and war materials produced by the Germans in the armaments factories. Many of these
reports crossed the route from Nowy Sącz to Budapest.
The work of those many anonymous people called by us couriers was very important
and courageous, therefore we would like as many people as possible to hear and remember about their
heroism.

MEMORY OF
Gijs Verdick (1994 - 2016)
11
Gijs Verdick raced for Cyclingteam Jo Piels during the 7th edion of Carpathian Couriers Race. 2016 was his first year on the connental level, a huge chance to showcase his abilies and develop. Racing from Hungary to Poland was his first major test in a stage race for espoirs. With the Dutch team dominang the compeon every year and usually trying to fend off myriads of aacks, Gijs was meant to learn and enjoy racing his bike with peers from all over Europe. He did not have the chance to finish the race with his teammates. His heart failed twice on the night before the final stage and, despite all efforts, stopped beang a few days later. In memory of a young rider who passed away much too early, race number 142 has been rered and will be never used again.

Nowy Sącz Oświęcim
Przyjedź do Miasta Oświęcim, odwiedź Muzeum Zamek i Muzeum Żydowskie i Synagogę, aby poznać ponad 800-letnią historię miasta.
Koniecznie
trzeba odwiedzić dawny kapitularz domini-kański z XIV wieku – dziś kaplicę św. Jacka Odrowąża.

The unique Carpathian identy means two inextricably interconnected elements: people and nature. Together they form the unique richness of this part of the world. Our common treasure! Each Carpathian value is a common value and there is more of this commonwealth in the Carpathians than of what might divide. Regardless of the historical, cultural, social or economic legacy and circumstances - let the Carpathians Unite!
Excerpt from the message of the II Internaonal Pastoral Conference, Zawoja, May 2014.A few years ago the moo "Carpathians Unite" was only the name of the project, which aim was to protect the biological and landscape diversity of the Polish part of the Carpathians. Throughout four years, thanks to the joint effort of partners, a number of significant acons towards the implementaon of the provisions of the Carpathian Convenon has been achieved.
Today "Carpathians Unite" is not only and not primarily the project and its rich legacy. This simple yet very expressive moo appealed to masses of people, who share the similar concern for the common good of the natural and cultural landscape of the Carpathians. Self-governments and the authories of protected areas, representaves of NGOs and of the academic community, leaders of local communies, inhabitants of the mountain areas and tourists - all of them now form a community of the ideas, conveyed by the “Carpathian Unite” moo.
We are acve. We support the revival of pastoralism as the acve biodiversity protecon measure. We build the web knowledge base on the Carpathians. We develop environmentally friendly tourism. Together with organizaons and instuons, Carpathian communies and supporters we create and work for the implementaon of the Carpathian Convenon.
Anyone who cares for the Carpathians is invited to get involved and cooperate.
