    What is Taper?

The Taper is expressed as the amount the file diameterincreases each millimetre along its working surfacefrom the tip toward the file handle.

    Why Taper ???

Mechanical objectives of root canal preparation :bySchilder) The root canal preparation should develop a continuously

tapering cone. Making the canal narrower apically and widest coronally. Keep the apical opening as small as possible. Making the preparation in multiple plane which introduces the

concept of Flow. Avoid transportation of foramen.

    Instruments & Armamentarium

The larger tapered files have the shortest working surfacelengths, while the smaller more vulnerable tapered files havelonger working lengths with greater areas for potentialengagement.

    Instrumentation

One of the most important considerations for rotary

instrumentation is utilizing the advantage of changingfile tapers.

The reduction of stress on the instruments cansignificantly be achieved by minimizing engagement

    with this technique.

    Instrumentation

There are two ways to shape a canal with Larger Taper

    1. Instrumentation of a root canal by using files of thesame taper but with varying apical tip diameters.

    2. Instrumentation of root canal by varying orgraduating tapers. These files have the constant apicaltip size but their taper varies from (04 % to 12%).

Conclusion Preparation of the root canal system is recognized as being

one of the most important stages in root canal treatment. The aim of the root canal instrumentation is to create a taper

shape to allow effective irrigation to clean the root canalsystem.

It includes the removal of vital and necrotic tissues from theroot canal system, along with infected root dentin.

Numerous studies have shown the ability of several newrotary nickel titanium systems with variety of taper tomaintain original root canal curvature and to produce a welltapered root canal form sufficient for obturation.
