  • Historically, railways built and operated by private capital -from mine or Timber forests to the Port.

    No respect for borders until in 50s & 60s when railways were taken over by newly independent nations.

    Each Country introduced its own set of rules and regulations for running of trains.

    Adhoc and uncoordinated acquisition of equipment.

  • To foster regional Integration

    Contribute to GDP through commercial operations at competitiverates.

    Allowing international trains on open access to maximize railwayinfrastructure utilization

    Attract independent private capital to invest in railways

    To achieve Political and economic goals. TAZARA is a case in point for cross-border railway construction to

    achieve political and commercial goals.Ownership by both Governments on a 50-50 basis Common operation rules and regulations on both sides

  • Conclusion Cross border trains play an indisputably major role

    in the growth of regional economies.

    TAZARA is one of the cross border train that hasexisted for about 50 years.

    There is need to invest in resolving highlightedchallenges to create efficiencies.

    Take advantage of the existing political will, supportby regional institutions to create efficient railways.
