04 TANKERS Leading the way
dnv gl – your
trusted partner
Today’s tanker operators prioritise safety, quality and
avoiding accidents. Cargo owners also want to be
sure that no shortcuts are taken that might threaten
these fundamental goals. These priorities are sup-
ported by DNV GL’s stated mission: safeguarding life,
property and the environment. Quality is the number
one priority in DNV GL and this is one of the reasons
why we are a trusted partner for tanker operators
when it comes to safety and compliance.
We offer classiication and related services, support-
ing tanker owners in their critical efforts to perform
in compliance with their charterers’ expectations and
requirements. Our goal is to stay in the forefront of
technology developments and innovation, respond-
ing to commercial market developments and de-
mand for environmental and safety improvements.
DNV GL has not only signiicantly expanded its
global network through the merger of DNV and
Germanischer Lloyd, it now has more R&D resources
and expertise to strengthen its technology and com-
petence base. And with around 6,000 highly skilled
employees active in the maritime segment, DNV GL
is in a unique position to support customers with
premium, cost-effective classiication and advisory
services – anytime, anywhere.
For our customers, that means we have more survey-
ors, faster response times and more experts within
business-critical disciplines than any other classii-
cation society.
Our expertise in the tanker segment cannot be
measured simply by the number of ports where we
operate or the number of vessels in our portfolio.
Rather, our success is determined by the quality of
the services we deliver to each individual customer.
We believe that while the size of our organisation
represents a genuine beneit to our customers, our
skill, dedication and understanding of the tanker
business are what differentiate DNV GL from compet-
ing providers of class services.
Today, DNV GL is a technology leader in the tanker
segment. By developing rules and maintaining
cutting-edge competence, we remain committed to
strengthening our peerless reputation in this dyna-
mic segment. Looking ahead, DNV GL will continue
to focus on ship safety, eficiency and environmental

The future will bring some signiicant changes to the
shipping industry. With a continued focus on energy
eficiency and stricter requirements to air and water
emissions, the industry is likely to adopt new tech-
nologies that will affect the design, construction and
operation of next generation tankers.
New operating proiles have led to modiied hull
forms and new engine types for variable speeds.
Over the past ive years, regulatory compliance has
become more complex, with divergent requirements
from lag states in addition to speciic requirements
from various cargo owners.
DNV GL is looking to the future by developing con-
cept studies of new designs and technologies, such
as Triality, a tanker concept that demonstrates how
new technologies can be used to design, construct
and operate tankers more eficiently. But we also
work closely with customers to optimise new de-
signs, using state-of-the-art technology to calculate
energy eficiency and improve performance.
DNV GL has vast experience from a large number
of newbuilding projects. We are committed to share
our unique competence within the tanker segment
with our customers in the critical early phase of new-
building projects in order to help develop a specii-
cation tailored to your needs.

Setting the standard in tanker design
DNV GL has been at the forefront in the develop-
ment of state-of-the-art computational technology
for direct analysis of tanker loads and responses. The
new IACS Harmonised Common Structural Rules will
set a new standard for tanker design. DNV GL has
been involved in the development of the new rule
set and is currently helping yards and owners to get
ready for the new requirements. DNV GL also offers
unique class notations documenting compliance
with performance and environmental criteria in the

DNV GL has played a key role in working with the oil
industry to develop the shuttle tanker standards to
meet the most advanced challenges for safely per-
forming cargo loading in the harsh offshore environ-
ment. Tailor-made class notations for shuttle tankers
have been developed to ensure that the necessary
safety standards are maintained – notations that are
recognised by major oil companies as the accepted
standard. Some relevant class notations for tankers
are described below.

Quality and safety at minimum cost are key success
criteria in the tanker segment. The combination of
oversupply, depressed rates and high fuel costs has
had a signiicant impact on the tanker segment, for-
cing owners to review how they operate their leets.
Shortcomings in quality and compliance will put
ships out of business and, if challenges do arise, it is
essential to resolve them as quickly as possible. DNV
GL is involved daily in answering customers’ techni-
cal questions and resolving port state control and
vetting issues to keep customers’ ships in business.
DNV GL has taken a leading position in working with

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has
developed a standard for ship recycling (the Hong
Kong Convention). While it may take time for the
Convention to enter into force, many prudent owners
are already taking steps to ensure that ship recycling
is done in a safe and environmentally friendly man-
ner in anticipation of ratiication by member states.
DNV GL offers a variety of class notations that help
ship owners specify certain minimum standards
related to the use and documentation of hazard-
ous substances on board throughout the entire life
cycle of a vessel. Many owners and yards are already
preparing to comply with the Inventory of Hazardous
Materials (IHM), a key provision of the Convention.
In support of these efforts, DNV GL has developed
the IHM Green Server, which is speciically designed
to help owners keep IHM documentation updated
throughout the vessel’s life cycle, thus providing
relevant information when the vessel is due to be
recycled.
DNV GL offers advisory services to help stakeholders
collect information, develop plans and documents
for recycling, and assess recycling facilities.

Solutions for a changing industry
Operating a successful leet of tankers in the future
will require the adoption of new technologies and
innovative solutions. Those players willing to invest
in new technologies are likely to achieve a strong
competitive advantage in the years ahead. Energy
eficiency, operational lexibility and not least the
best fuel strategy to meet future emission require-
ments are key areas which are highly relevant to the
tanker segment.
DNV GL allocates a signiicant part of its yearly reve-
nue to projects bringing innovation to the maritime
industry, as well as to projects that help maintain our
position as a leader in selected technology ields.
In addition to being in the forefront of rule develop-
ment, DNV GL is a recognised industry leader in
research and development, often working with other
stakeholders in Joint Industry Projects. With concept
studies like Triality and Best Plus, DNV GL has taken
the lead in developing new tanker concepts, em-
ploying both available and emerging technologies.
Another recent example on research and innovation
in DNV GL is the development of COSSMOS (Com-
plex Ship Systems Modelling & Simulation). COSS-
MOS is a software tool for optimising the design
and operation of energy-intensive systems such as
ship machinery power plants. The tool is especially
suitable for analysing the complex arrangements
of steam/boiler systems and waste heat recovery
systems providing good decision support during the
design phase.
DNV GL contributes expertise to the development of
emerging maritime technologies and works together
with other industries to develop solutions for tank-
ers. In addition, we offer acknowledged processes
for qualifying new technology and assist in bringing
safe, commercially viable and eficient solutions to
the market.
