Keeping your kids safe online is easy with a few simple precautions.

1. Nothing replaces parental supervision and education for kids about

cybersafety.

2. Set a technology curfew.

3. Remind your child to never give out identifying information such as your

home address, school name or telephone number in a public message such

as chat or newsgroups.

4. If your child posts photos online, use privacy settings to limit access to

people they know well.

5. Remind your child that people don't always tell the truth online, and they

can't take anything at face value.

6. Reassure your child that they can tell you anything, without fear of losing

the laptop or internet access.

7. If they get a message or email that's threatening or rude, they should

'STOP, BLOCK, TELL'. First step is to tell your child to stop

responding to the abuse and then block those people sending threatening

or rude messages if they continue. Let your child know that if they are

being bullied, or know someone else who is, they should tell a trusted

adult.

8. Never click on any links that are contained in emails from people they

don't know. As well as sexual content, they could contain a computer

virus.

9. If you suspect your child has been contacted by a predator, try to save a

copy of the chat log (or whatever form the contact takes) for evidence. Call

Crime Stoppers 24-hour line 1800 333 000 to make a formal complaint.

10. Your child will be using computers and the technology for the rest of their

lives – you're in the great position of being able to get them off to a safe,

positive start.

Community Service Award Rhianna Smith, accompanied by her parents, attended a very special award ceremony at Government House, Sydney. Rhianna was just one of twenty young people awarded the John Lincoln Youth Community Service Award for 2012. Rhianna was nominated by Tamworth High School for her long-term commitment to a range of areas of community service, both through the school’s Interact Club and her own personal activities. She has been a diligent worker to support cancer research and Ronald McDonald House, as well as being a devoted worker in the Guides. Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir made the presentation on behalf of the NSW Order of Australia Committee. The celebration was concluded with Afternoon Tea on the Colonnade overlooking the magnificent Sydney Harbour.

Giving Back to the Community

Well-known local, Mr Peter Draper, now has his own driver-training business. And to give back to the community, he has been very kindly donating some of his time and vehicle to assist students who would not normally be able to access specialist driver training. The school community is very grateful…..thank you Mr Draper!

Yearly Examinations Years 7-10 Over the last week, all students from Years 7-10 have completed their annual examinations in the school hall. This is a very important training exercise for all students. It is not only an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge that has been acquired and the mastery of certain skills, but it provides a chance for students to practice the self-discipline required to focus and read/write for a sustained period. With the recent abolition of the School Certificate examinations, there are few other opportunities for students to experience and practice examination techniques before facing the HSC at the conclusion of their thirteen years of schooling. Congratulations to all students who have participated so well in these exams and thanks to the staff for the firm supervision required for this exercise.

Mobile Phones at School – Our Policy Tamworth High School does not adopt a blanket ban to mobile phones at school. We feel that this approach is neither age appropriate nor does it teach students to use mobile phones in an appropriate manner. However, there is an Acceptable Use of Mobile Phone and Personal Electronic Device Policy. This policy outlines what is and what is not permitted by students with mobile phones at school. Here are some guidelines listed in the policy:

Mobile phones are to be switched off and kept out of sight during classes inc. sport, outdoor practical classes (e.g.PE and Agriculture) and band practice. Mobile phones that cannot be turned off in the usual sense must be switched to flight mode.

Parents are reminded that in cases of emergency, the school front office remains a vital and appropriate point of contact and can ensure your child is reached quickly and assisted in any appropriate way.

In the rare and exceptional circumstances where the arrangements given above will not meet requirements an exception may be permitted if the parent/guardian specifically requests it. Such requests should be directed to the Deputy Principal who will write a note allowing the student to leave class to make the phone call.

Students are permitted to use mobile phones before school, at recess and lunch breaks and after school in an appropriate manner.

Mobile phones should not be used in any manner or place that is disruptive to the normal routine of the school e.g. on assembly.

Students should protect their phone numbers by only giving them to friends and keeping a note of who they have given them to. This can help protect the student’s number from falling into the wrong hands and guard against the receipt of insulting, threatening or unpleasant voice, text, picture and hands and video messages via the usual phone networks, the internet or blue tooth and infra red connectivity.

School Spectacular Excursion 2012 – Arena Choir

On Wednesday 21st of November we left the bus station excited to get to Sydney and thrilled that we had no more rehearsals left. Until we found out Jasen had all the songs on his phone and Meg Whitten had a speaker. So for the start of the trip that's all they did while Chris and I got out of it, don't ask how cause I have no idea! The rest of the trip was some more rehearsing and a heap of laughter with Miss in front of us trying to sleep but soon gave up and just read a book of Jasen's, he had like six! Our way into Sydney made us all look like real tourists with our cameras and a heap of amazement. Personally I think I filled my camera with photos just from our way over the Harbour Bridge. So Mum and Dad won’t be seeing photos of anything else! When we got to the hostel Chris, Braedyn Brown and I got caught on the elevator which made us “look Iike tourists” once again. Our rooms were pretty big and when we got up to them we were all meant to make our beds, but I got caught writing this so sleep was delayed! The next day we all woke up early to get ready for our rehearsal with the rest of the secondary arena choir. We left the hostel nice and early so we could meander but Jasen's definition of meander and everyone else's definition were completely different so we ended up running to the Entertainment Centre for the rest of the trip which really made my legs hurt. Our rehearsal went for 7 hours on Thursday and we ended the day with watching the other performers sing and dance, which was when we saw Jack Vidgen and screamed before getting out our phones and taking as many photos as possible.

Attended by: Jasen Scott, Megan Hunt,

Braedyn Brown, Meg Whitten,

Taylor Stevens, Hannah Gordon,

Charli Kenny, Georgia Martin, Jamie Blackler , Chris Johnsen

and Mrs Cornwell.

That night we made the decision to go and see the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. On our way we got to see a massive cruise ship being towed in to pick up more people. The Opera House was bigger than we all expected. Friday was the biggest day of my life!! We woke up early to "meander" down to the Entertainment Centre we did a full dress rehearsal, matinee performance and then evening performance. We got back to the hotel at around 11:30pm and most of us “crashed” (though rumour has it Miss was growling at one room at 1am).

Saturday: some slept in until half past 9, which was like heaven (the sensible one’s got up to have breakfast and then rested). We left to go shopping near Darling Harbour at half past 10, shopped for a couple of hours then headed back towards the Entertainment Centre where we did our last two performances.

There was lots of excitement about getting Jack Vidgen’s autograph! Another very late night saw us get even wearier.

We woke up on Sunday morning and went to breakfast at 7 because Miss made it compulsory, we had to strip the sheets off our bed, pack all our clothes and while doing so I realised that buying shoes was pretty silly because they took up a lot of room in my tiny suitcase. Anyway, after we cleaned our rooms up, we headed to the train station, climbed aboard and slept!! A massive thanks to Jasen Scott for helping us practice constantly (and I mean constantly) !

Also, it was great to see Ashley Scott and Michaella Toomey performing with the core choir, Meghan McGrane in dance and Mrs Sullivan in the production crew.

Written by Megan Hunt with a little help from the other weary singers.
