AVS CONTINUE FIVE-GAME TRIP TONIGHT IN TAMPA The Colorado Avalanche continues their five-game road trip tonight in Tampa against the Lightning.  The Avs are 1-1-1 so far on thistrip, which concludes on Monday night in St. Louis.  This five-game, nine-day journey is the longest continuous road trip of the seasonfor the Avalanche.  The Avs have another five-game road trip in March, but the team will return home after three of those contests.  TheAvs are 6-2-1 in their last nine games and 9-4-1 in their last 14. PICKING UP THE SLACK Calvin Pickard, who was recalled by Colorado for the fourth time this season Monday, made 44 saves in Tuesday's 3-2 shootout loss atCarolina.  It was Pickard's third 40-save effort of the season, which includes an Avalanche rookie-record 47-save performance on Dec.18 at Pittsburgh.  Pickard leads all NHL goaltenders with a .936 save percentage this year.  He ranks eighth in goals-against average at2.18, which is second among league rookies behind only Winnipeg's Michael Hutchinson (2.00).  Pickard is 2-1-2 in his last five startswith a 1.74 GAA and .953 Sv% (310 min, 190 SA, 9 GA) and 6-4-3 with a 1.96 GAA and .943 Sv% in his last 13 games, 11 starts (766min, 440 SA, 25 GA). RECORD NIGHT FOR VARLY Semyon Varlamov stopped all 54 shots in the Avalanche's 2-0 victory over the Blackhawks on Jan. 6 in Chicago.  Varlamov’s 54 saveswere the most ever in a regular-season road shutout since the NHL officially began tracking shots on goal nearly 60 years ago.  Onlytwo goaltenders have recorded 54 or more saves in a home shutout in that span: Ben Scrivens (59) and Mike Smith (54).  Varlamov's54 saves were the most in Colorado Avalanche history and the second-most in franchise history behind Ron Tugnutt's 70-saveperformance for Quebec on March 21, 1991 at Boston.  Varlamov’s 54 saves also set a career high, breaking his previous mark of 50set in a 6-4 loss at Edmonton on Feb. 16, 2013.  Varly is the only Avalanche/Nordiques goaltender with two 50-save efforts.
