The Pride Comedy Fest takes place on the second day of the Pride Weekend, Saturday 7 March. I have not been for quite some ti me so I was pleasantly surprised to see, against one wall, a really remarkable litt le garden, the handy work of the employees of the dump site. Thursday evening most of the country tuned into SABC2 to watch the president give his State of the Nation Address (SONA) and watched in fascinated shock as Parliament was turned into a circus.To start off with, the nation’s MPs showed up on Parliament’s red carpet dressed up like celebrities. While many South African’s probably went to bed without food, these MPs fl aunted their fi nery.Once inside, the real show began. We all expected the EFF to challenge President Jacob Zuma, but no one was prepared to see armed security ‘escorting’ the EFF MPs out of t he national assembly because they wouldn’t let the Nkandla matter drop.Added to that, Twitter was burned up with updates about blocked cellphone signals, the EFF being forcefully removed from Parly and the DA walking out as they were disgusted with the ANC for resort-ing to armed forces to ‘police’ parliament.While the president droned on about protecting women and children against abuse, a female EFF MP was being taken to hospital because she was beaten by the armed forces who escorted the party’s members out of Parly.SONA 2015 was a sad circus that showed South Africans that the ANC, just like the Apartheid NP government will use force to get its way and to silence those who oppose it. - Natasha Kotze

Each year members from all across Gauteng fl ock to the Nan Hua Temple in Bronkhorstspruit to celebrate the Chinese New Year.This year the Chinese New Year starts on 19 February and the temple will be celebrating it on 22 February with an authentic cultural performance. 2015 is the year of the goat. In the past, the Chinese have always used ‘San Yan Kai Tai (an auspicious beginning of a new year)’ to wish everyone a prosperous upcoming year. The word ‘san’ (pronounced ‘sun’) happens to be homophone for the word for ‘goat’ in Chinese. ‘Goat’ has a gentle, loving nature; ‘Sun’ warms up the world, bringing harmony. Together, with a play on words, a phrase for the combination of peace and warmth can be brought about, known as ‘San Yang He Xie’ (Auspicious Beginnings of Peace and Harmony).In such an enormous world, with such a massive population, living in harmony is of utmost importance. The Greater Boksburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GBCCI) is a movement like most of the South African business chambers that acts as a link between commerce and industry and municipal institutions, says GBCCI president Willi Riedel.The Boksburg Chamber, which is approximately 100 years old, was originally founded by the mining industry, which was the biggest industry in the town at the time. “As time passed, the role of the mines diminished and it is now hardly an employer in Boksburg,” says Riedel.The focus of the chamber has also changed with time and today it focuses not only on building bridges between the chamber movement and offi cial institutions such as government and other legal bodies, ensuring that the industries in Boksburg and its population have grown with time.“This has resulted in a substantial number of local and international commercial and industrial companies calling Boksburg their home,” says Riedel.As the industries grew in Boksburg, the chamber became the communication channel between industry and government. “This interaction has been proven quite successful and this results in improved communication between the various stakeholders,” he explains.“However, we can still be more effective if the companies residing in the Boksburg precinct will become members of the chamber as the primary aim is to represent industry at large with the various offi cial bodies.”He added that their services also include the issuing of Certifi cates of Origin which are necessary for companies wishing to export goods. “This service is provided to chamber members, as well as non-members,” Riedel says.Developing new businessThe further focus and involvement of the GBCCI with the emerging industry is to develop and assist in running emerging businesses on a formal, professional basis to be able to secure work in the sector, which is extremely diffi cult at the moment.“We have, in conjunction with the Department of Economic Development, developed programmes to be able to give

informal business an opportunity to enter this segment. The process used is called BLC (Business Linkage Centre).”“The purpose is to equip small and informal companies with skills suitable to undertake non-core business work at the bigger companies. The aim is to motivate the bigger companies of the core business, and offer the auxiliary works, which each company has, by way of sharing their involvement in auxiliary functions such as gardening, maintenance and transportation,” says Riedel.“This initiative is taking place in the whole of Ekurhuleni and considerable success has been achieved as some business has been redirected to these emerging businesses and it speaks for itself that the successes achieved also uplift the spirit of the community in which we live and work, and create job opportunities,” he said.This is testimony to the efforts of all the parties involved to ensure that all opportunities identifi ed are developed to reality, creating hope for a better future.“The Boksburg Chamber partakes in these ventures and it goes without saying that an enhanced membership will enable us to do even more. I appeal to you to join the chamber and foster a climate in which the whole population of the Greater Boksburg precinct has a chance to prosper,” Riedel said.MembershipThe GBCCI membership currently includes large and small companies and has grown to 140 companies.“There are still large opportunities, which at this time are untapped and the strengthening of the chamber will result in talking from a stronger negotiation base. Great strides have been made in improving the communication channels and new industry has been successfully recruited,” he says.The chamber is also a member of the Ekurhuleni Business Association (EBA) and Riedel is the current chairman.The EBA is an affi liation of some eight chambers, all of which are residing in and representing most of the ‘old’ towns in Ekurhuleni. A man impersonating a Metro Police offi cer was arrested on 10 February by the Boksburg North SAPS.On 17 January the suspect introduced himself to the complainant at the Total Garage, North Rand Road, Bardene, telling him he was a Metro Police offi cer. “He then asked the complainant to help him out with R500 cash, so that he could fi x his vehicle. The complainant gave him the money, and they exchanged cellphone

numbers,” says Lieutenant Juanita Coetzer, communication offi cer for the Boksburg North SAPS.After a few days the complainant phoned the number, but the phone just rang and went to voicemail.On 10 February the complainant saw the suspect at the same garage and immediately phoned the Boksburg North SAPS.“The suspect was then arrested for impersonating an offi cer,” explains Lt Coetzer.

An Ekurhuleni Metro Police offi cer arrested three suspects who were allegedly robbing people on the R21 freeway on 10 February.The offi cer was on duty patrolling the R21 freeway at around 10am when he received a call to be on the lookout for a white Toyota Quantum that was robbing people on the freeway. Shortly after the call out, he noticed the vehicle passing him on the freeway. “The offi cer started to chase the vehicle, and managed to stop the vehicle at the Leon Ferreira Fire Station, on the corner of Trichardt Street and North Rand Road, Boksburg North,” says

Upon searching the vehicle, he also found possibly stolen items. “Upon further investigation by Boksburg North detectives, it was found that the fi rearm might possibly be a stolen SAPS fi rearm with offi cial ammunition. This will be established when the fi rearm is tested by SAPS forensics,” says Lt Coetzer.The suspects were detained at Boksburg North SAPS.

It was a proud moment for members of the Brakpan cluster of the South African Police Sevices (SAPS), standing at attention to receive their long service medals.The SAPS Brakpan cluster, consisting of Boksburg, Boksburg North, Reiger Park, Brakpan and Tsakane, on 12 February, honoured those police offi cers serving communities in the employ of SAPS for longer than 10 years, by presenting them with medals. The ceremony was held at the Heidelberg Military base. Medals for 10, 20 and 30 years’ service were pinned on the proud chests of offi cers from the various areas within the cluster.Major General De Lange, one of the Provincial Generals, and Brigadier Johan

Van Der Westhuizen, the Brakpan cluster commander, presented the medals to the recipients. Major General De Lange, in her keynote address, thanked the offi cers for the dedicated service to the cause of law and justice for all. She encouraged those present to continue to fi ght the good fi ght, but reminded them that “it starts with our attitude and respect for the communities we serve.”She encouraged them to continue to do good work and to refrain from tarnishing the name of the Police Services through bad and dishonourable behaviour.Offi cers left the ceremony proud, excited and motivated to continue to serve their communities to the best of their abilities and reach their next milestone in long service achievements with their dignity intact.

The nation was shocked and appalled at the goings on at the State of the Nation Address 2015 (SONA2015) on Thursday evening. The president had not been on the podium for long when EFF MP Godrich Gardee interrupted his speech to ask when he would pay back the money spent on Nkandla.An obviously prepared Speaker Baleka Mbete quelled this and after numerous EFF MPs raised the same concerns, she asked them to leave. When the MPs did not, things became heated when security personnel were asked to remove the MPs from the chamber and a scuffle ensued.Once calm had been restored, the DA parliamentary spokesperson raised the issue of using the police force to remove MPs. The Cape Town Cycle Tour, which takes place on 8 March, is set to begin in Cape Town’s city centre, continue on a circular 109km route around the Cape Peninsula and, fi nally, return to Green Point. As many as 35,000 cyclists are expected to participate in this year’s event, which is one of the most prestigious on the cycling calendar, bringing in participants not only from SA, but also from the rest of Africa and beyond.If this is your fi rst time taking part, here are a few tips on how to prepare for the race:1. Check your bike:Make sure the saddle height is correct for you and make sure your bike is in a roadworthy condition. Check your tyres to make sure they have plenty of tread and check them for fl int and other sharp objects you may have picked up while out training. Pack a puncture repair kit, a spare tube, tyre levers and a pump.Check that your brakes are working and that the cables are not frayed. Check that your brake blocks still have plenty of life left in them.Check your gears, especially the lower ones, as you will have a hilly route in the Argus. If you are a beginner and do not know what to check, it might be a good idea to take your bike to your local cycle shop for a check-up. Do this at least a week before the ride to ensure that you will have a bike on the day of the race2. What to wear:Check the weather forecast during the week leading up to the event to make sure you wear clothes appropriate for the weather. You do not want to be caught unprepared if the weather is not what you expected. Also, take a change of clothes for afterwards.It is better to have layers of clothing to keep you warm and dry. If it gets hot, you can just peel the layers away.If rain is forecast, pack a waterproof jacket that can easily fold into your back pocket.3. What to eatPack enough food (energy bars and snacks) and drink to get you around the course. Even if feed stations are advertised, they could be poorly stocked or offer nutrition that does not suit you.Do not try something new on the day. Rather test different foods and drinks to see what will serve you best during the cycle tour. Only take along foods you know agree with you and will make you feel good and energised.Drink one bottle of liquid each hour to keep yourself hydrated. Do not wait to eat until you feel hungry or thirsty as by then it is too late and it can be very diffi cult to restore your equilibrium.Lastly, take along food for afterwards so that you can start to refuel as soon as you fi nish. Protein or milky drinks are great to take after the event, as they repair damaged muscle fi bres.
