After 11 months on the run, child murder suspects Bongani Dladla and Cindi Mkhonza were finally arrested last week Thursday. The innocent victim of the alleged crime was 7-year-old Siphosihle Dladla, the biological son of 36-year-old Dladla and the stepson of the 20-year-old Mkhonza.

Both were arrested on the same day at around 01:45 am at Zone 1 in Zonkizizwe. They were charged with murder and appeared for the first time before the Palm Ridge Court on 11 July. The case was postponed to 25 July, when both the accused will make a formal bail application and the State Prosecutor will also indicate which further charges will be added to the main charge of murder.Siphosihle was found dead on 17 August 2013 next to a house in Hlongwane Section in Katlehong. The SAPS Victim Identification Centre at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Pretoria put together a frontal image of the deceased in order to assist with the possible identification of the young boy, whose identity was unknown at the time. The reconstructed picture of the deceased was sent to the media and on 16 October he was identified by his biological mother at Germiston State Mortuary as her son Siphosihle Dladla.The investigating officers from Katlehong Serious and Violent Crime Investigative Unit, Detective Warrant Officer Polane Mokadi and Detective Constable John Lekalakala began a day-and-night investigation to find the perpetrators. After some time, they discovered that Siphosihle’s father was also

the uncle of Siphosihle’s mother. Siphosihle’s great-grandmother stated in an affidavit that her son Bongani Dladla started abusing Siphosihle’s mother, Winephi Dladla, at the age of 13, after the young girl’s mother (and Siphosihle’s grandmother and Bongani Dladla’s sister) passed away. The great-grandmother reported the matter to the Department of Social Development which intervened, but no charges could be laid, as Siphosihle’s mother refused to co-operate. At the age of 16, she fell pregnant with her uncle’s child and the great-grandmother chased them both out of her house, after which they went to live together in Thokoza.At the age of 17, Winephi could no longer take Dladla’s abuse and decided to leave him, taking the infant Siphosihle with her. During November 2012 the young single mother was no longer able to look after her son and took him to his father and the man’s new girlfriend, Cindi Mkhonza, so that they could take care of him. On 11 October 2013, friends of Bongani Dladla, Wellington Mbatha (64) and his wife Elina Mabuyisa (60), went to Thokoza Police Station to report a missing child. They were arrested for perjury and Winephi Dladla,

Siphosihle’s biological mother, was also arrested for child neglect, but the case was later temporarily withdrawn.Captain Piet Rossouw, Communications Officer of Vosloorus Police Station said, “We are celebrating the work of the detectives for catching the fish. This is a lesson to all criminals that they can run but they cannot hide - South Africa is too small and the long arm of the law will catch them.”

Speaking to tame TIMES, Musiiwa Agnes Magodzho, Manager for Lotsha Support Organisation, said, “We are delighted with the donations, as some of the parents and guardians of the children could not afford to buy new shoes for them.

Maphumphum ready to fly high in radio broadcasting

Phumzile “Maphumphum” Mlangeni is steadily climbing the ladder to stardom, earning respect both from the community and her colleagues in the radio broadcasting industry. Mlangeni’s passion to entertain motivated her to join leading Ekurhuleni community radio station Kasie FM in 2008. She did not allow circumstances to be a stumbling block in the way of her dream of being a radio personality. “I underwent an intensive six weeks of training at the radio during the graveyard shift. I got my first break in 2008 when the station management offered me an opportunity to read funeral announcements between 7:30pm and 8:00pm on Thursdays,” explained Mlangeni.As if that were not enough, she received a second golden opportunity at the radio station to present Ezakwantu Traditional Music on Saturdays between 9am and 12pm. A third opportunity came in 2010, when she was

asked to present Asimdumise Gospel Show, which was broadcast on Sundays between 6am and 9pm. Maphumphum’s popularity in Kasie FM soared and paved the way for her nomination for several broadcasting awards. “Kasie FM listeners religiously followed both my shows in the comfort of their houses,” she said. “Hence, I was nominated twice in the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) and twice in the South African Broadcasting Corporation Crown Gospel Awards. Last year I was also nominated in the Annual Zion Music Awards (AZMA). Despite several nominations I got lately, it was unfortunate that I did not win any award yet.” “However, I am confident that within a matter of time I will win one of the awards. My nominations are an indication that audiences are steadily starting to give me recognition in the broadcasting industry,” said Maphumphum.Her short-term goal is to co-present shows with her role model Dudu Khoza from Ukhozi FM and, later on, she would like to work for a leading national radio station.

Nurturing township jewels in roller skatingKathorus Roller Skating Club founder Itumeleng Pitso is on a mission to transform the lives of Kathorus youngsters, training novice roller skaters to be world champions.His initiative is often seen as unattainable by doubting critics due to Katlehong’s bumpy roads and the misconception that the sport can be afforded only by the elite few. Yet he tirelessly continues to unearth shining jewels in abundance in dusty Kathorus. Pitso founded the club in 2008 and it has been a revelation within roller skating circles. “In 2009 I competed in the South African Roller Skating Championship held in Pretoria and obtained position 3 in the Over-17 category. Again, I competed in the 2012 South African Open Inline Championship held in Sun City in the North West Province and won it,” he said.The second jewel to be unearthed from the club was Luyanda Magcai, who represented South Africa twice. Pitso said Magcai

outshined his competitors in the Roller Skating Europe Tour Championship held in Hungary and won a gold medal. In the second round of the same competition held in Germany, Magcai obtained positions 3 and 4 in successive rounds.“We then produced two talented ladies namely, Bonolo Pitso and Nokuthula Khumalo. They both qualified for the SA test but only Khumalo managed to proceed to the trials where she obtained position 2.” “It was most unfortunate that Khumalo could not proceed to represent the country because only position 1 competitors were allowed to represent the country,” explained Pitso. He said Zithulele Nkosi is another jewel unearthed from Katlehong. Zithulele qualified for the Eastern Cape Championship and obtained position 3 in 2013. “This year we produced two skating rising stars, Kutlwano Mogotsi (18) and Katiso Mokoena (17).““They both made it to the South African Club trials. Karabo Sehlogo is also undergoing the Artistic Skating Athletics test. If she succeeds, she will represent South Africa in Spain.”
