Ballroom Dance Lessons Time to go back to basics and work on the Fox-trot. This dance is the most popular of all dances, especially when you consider the Foxtrot and Texas Two-Step are virtually the same. At most dances, about 60% to 70% of the individual dances are Fox-trots/Texas Two-Steps. So if you can develop a number of different steps in the Foxtrot beyond the basic, you will impress a lot of other dancers. The Foxtrot originated in 1914 and was named after Harry Fox, a vaudeville dancer and actor who popularized the dance. We’ll teach you the basic step and 4 or 5 optional steps to enhance your ballroom dancing. Lessons in January will be in the Mimosa Room on Thursday, January 5th, and Thursday January 19th, starting at 2:30PM. The class is for dancers who have never had formal lessons or who have had lessons but have forgotten most of what they learned. Dancing is fun, good exercise and a great way to make new friends. And the best thing is that the lessons are free!

GUEST SPEAKER PROGRAM PRESENTS:

Vincent R. Johnson,

Professor of Law, St Mary's University

"America's Exceptional Commitment to Free Speech"

England and the United States share a common legal tradition that has been shaped by principles dating back at least 800 years to the time of the Magna Carta. Even after the American colonies declared their independence from England in 1776, English law was still widely followed in the new nation unless it was inconsistent with American institutions or new ideas. As late as 1964, American libel law was essentially identical to English libel law.

However, during the past half century, the paths of England and the United States have significantly diverged in the field of defamation. So great are the differences that in recent decades United States courts have refused to enforce English judgments arising from claims for libel and slander.

(continued) In response to what is often called “libel tour-ism”—the preference of defamation plaintiffs to sue media defendants in England and other countries where they can avoid American constitutional protections for free speech and free press—the United States in 2010 passed a law commonly referred to as the “SPEECH Act.” That law prohibits American courts from recog-nizing or enforcing foreign judgments for libel and slander obtained under laws that do not provide as much protection for speech and press as is afforded by the first amendment of the United States Constitution.

The American refusal to recognize and enforce English libel and slander awards is only one part of the story about how the principles governing free speech have diverged in these two great common law jurisdictions. This talk will explore the larger story. Please join me in welcoming Professor Vincent R. Johnson on Tuesday, January 17th, 10:00 AM in the Mimosa Room. Hope to see you there.

Lunch & A Movie

In the 1910s, Srinivasa Ramanujan is a man of boundless intelligence that even the abject poverty of his home in Madras, India, cannot crush. His stellar intelligence in mathematics and his boundless confidence in both attract the attention of the noted British mathematics professor, G.H. Hardy, who invites him to further develop his computations at Trinity College at Cambridge.

Forced to leave his young wife, Janaki, behind, Ramanujan finds himself in a land where both his largely intuitive mathematical theories and his cultural values run headlong into both the stringent academic requirements of his school and mentor and the prejudiced realities of a Britain heading into World War One. Facing this with a family back home determined to keep him from his wife and his own declining health, Ramanujan joins with Hardy in a mutual struggle that would define Ramanujan as one of India's greatest modern scholars who broke more than one barrier in his worlds.

Residents will view The Man Who Knew Infinity, on Thursday, January 26th, in the Mimosa Room. Lunch is Chef’s choice to include dessert and choice of tea or water. Kudos Corner

On December 7th, two Marines, 1st Sgt Herrera and GySgt Valdez came to The Towers to accept the numerous Toys for Tots donated for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve annual campaign. A worthy cause and much appreciation goes out to all the contributors. Much thanks also to the many employees who participated and, as well, were behind the scenes to make the luncheon and the “giving” of the toys such a warm event. The Resident Service team worked through the days prior to help collect the toys. On the day of the lunch-eon each of them were there to help attend to the details and create some “funner” moments and ensure the gathering went off without a hitch. Give everyone a pat on the back!

Thank you to The Towers Singers and Carolyn Gaedke for a lovely performance at the tree lighting on Friday, December 3rd!

Thank You

On behalf of all the Residents of The Towers, a very special Thank you goes to Kathy Davila, Unit #2307, Fran and Ken Lineweaver, Unit #814 and Nino Martinez, Unit #1813, for decorating the Ped Mall Christmas Tree!

Thanks also to Kathy Davila for the giant stuffed reindeer she gifted to General Flores’ great-grandchildren. Thank You to Aida Martinez, Unit #417, for displaying a Christmas quilt on the 2nd floor balcony and also to the anonymous Residents who kindly displayed theirs. They have been enjoyed by all!

Sat. December 24th Christmas Eve

New Year The Star of the East Arrived just in time.

To guide us into the new year, Out of the drear and the cold.

The clutter of Christmas Lies ‘ round and about;

The tinsel is tarnished and old.

The Star came to give us The will to flow

Into the year filled With unknowns.

Our goal is not other Than to be where we are;

It will only go where we go.

So draw a circle around yourself And fill it all

With love here. The old you is gone, But you will now find

The true glow of Christmas All year.
