Be part of Subiaco’s latest public art project Do you like to get hands on? You can be part of Subiaco’s latest public art project Subiaco was built on a Sunday by joining in on one of the paint-by-numbers community involvement sessions between Saturdays 21 and 28 May, where you will be able to paint part of the new mural.

Designed by Mel McVee, the nine metre artwork commenced earlier this month on the laneway wall and the site of the cat cafe - coming soon to Subiaco at 147 Rokeby Road, Subiaco (opposite Smales Jewellers). Reflecting the local history of retail in the area, the mural seeks to identify the town centre as a social hub for the community. The design also references a number of original shops in the area, celebrating the local store as the centre point of community life.

For more information on the project visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/publicart

Planting local native species can make a valuable contribution to enhancing and supporting biodiversity throughout our region. Native plants require little water or fertiliser once they are established, which makes them the perfect choice for establishing a hardy but beautiful garden and verge at your home.

The city, in partnership with the Western Suburbs Regional Organisation of Councils (WESROC), is offering households and businesses within the city up to eighty local native plants for their verge and garden at the subsidised price of $1.50 each. Plants on offer include trees, shrubs, sedges and ground covers. Popular native plants such as kangaroo paws and grevilleas are just some of the species available.

Plants are available from APACE Nursery, 1 Johannah Street, North Fremantle from now until Saturday 30 May. Nursery opening times are 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12pm on Saturdays.

Get in quick and take advantage of this generous offer, simply present APACE staff with proof of City of Subiaco residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill.

For more information regarding the city’s verge programs, including home gardening tips, visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au

$3.3 million Rokeby Road improvements

Bzzz – have your sayThe city invites you to comment on its draft Beekeeping Policy. Beekeeping is becoming an increasingly popular hobby in Australia. The objective of the policy is to provide a framework to allow responsible beekeeping that does not detract from community safety and amenity.

Community and expert/industry feedback will be collated and presented to council with the policy (including any amendments) for final adoption in due course.

To have your say visit the city’s formal submissions hub at www.haveyoursaysubiaco.com.au by 5pm on Wednesday 25 may. Hard copies of the policy are also available at Subiaco Library, 237 Rokeby Road, Subiaco and the city’s Administration Centre, 241 Rokeby Road, Subiaco. Submissions can also be made by email to [email protected] or post addressed to the CEO, City of Subiaco, PO Box 270, Subiaco WA 6904.

Writer, researcher and teacher Rosemary Sayer takes you on a journey behind the scenes, news reports and political commentary, into the lives and homes of nine refugees living in Perth.

Her interviews and investigations uncover powerful, moving and incredible stories from refugees and asylum seekers from Burma, Afghanistan and South Sudan. These harrowing and emotional stories of Western Australians will leave you questioning are we doing enough?

The book More to the Story: Conversations with refugees is the story of individual refugees who have found the courage to run for their lives and the luck to find somewhere safe.

The city’s Rokeby Road streetscape upgrade project is underway.

The first phase of the works involves trenching for electrical conduit installation, median kerb replacement, new brick paving near tree wells, raising selected car parking bays and bollard installation. Where possible, works will be conducted at night and the city will liaise with local business owners and residents throughout the project. Noise will be mitigated by using appropriate noise restricted plant and equipment.

The works aim to conserve the heritage of the area whilst improving the hub of Subiaco as an inviting commercial and retail destination. To keep up to date with Rokeby Road changes visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/rokebyroad
