• Interpersonal skills are the way people treat each other and build relationships, and this requires so much more than communication.

“I have a favorite restaurant where I go when I want to celebrate something or enjoy a pleasant evening. Somehow, the staff are always able to make me feel welcome and comfortable.
When I thought about how they did that, I was surprised by the answer.
Sure they remembered my name and asked about family. And it was easy to get a table…but more than anything, it was the interpersonal relationships between the people who worked there.
From the Chef and the Manager, to the servers and bussers, they really worked as an integrated team, doing what was needed to be done for anyone’s customer. They did not only show respect to their customers, but they also demonstrated respect for each other – and that’s how they’ve kept my business all these years.”
Why are they important?
What behaviors indicate that an individual has effective interpersonal skills?
Speaking and acting politely Showing respect for
coworkers, customers, and supervisors
Offering to help others and demonstrating empathy
