Ornamental Features

Wonderland Deep Purple Sweet Alyssum is covered in stunning clusters of fragrant deep purplestar-shaped flowers at the ends of the stems from mid spring to mid fall. Its tiny narrow leaves remaingrayish green in color throughout the season. The fruit is not ornamentally significant.

Landscape Attributes

Wonderland Deep Purple Sweet Alyssum is a dense herbaceous annual with a trailing habit of growth,eventually spilling over the edges of hanging baskets and containers. It brings an extremely fine anddelicate texture to the garden composition and should be used to full effect.

This plant will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and should not require much pruning, exceptwhen necessary, such as to remove dieback. It is a good choice for attracting bees and butterflies to youryard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It has nosignificant negative characteristics.

Planting & Growing

Wonderland Deep Purple Sweet Alyssum will grow to be only 4 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of 24inches. When grown in masses or used as a bedding plant, individual plants should be spacedapproximately 20 inches apart. Its foliage tends to remain low and dense right to the ground. Although it'snot a true annual, this fast-growing plant can be expected to behave as an annual in our climate if leftoutdoors over the winter, usually needing replacement the following year. As such, gardeners should takeinto consideration that it will perform differently than it would in its native habitat.

This plant should be grown in a location that is shaded from the hot afternoon sun. It requires an evenlymoist well-drained soil for optimal growth, but will die in standing water. It is not particular as to soil typeor pH, and is able to handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrivein inner city environments. This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America. It canbe propagated by cuttings; however, as a cultivated variety, be aware that it may be subject to certainrestrictions or prohibitions on propagation.

Wonderland Deep Purple Sweet Alyssum is a fine choice for the garden, but it is also a good selection forplanting in hanging baskets. Because of its trailing habit of growth, it is ideally suited for use as a 'spiller'in the 'spiller-thriller-filler' container combination; plant it near the edges where it can spill gracefully overthe pot. Note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require morefrequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden.
