Planting & Growing
Autumn Fern will grow to be about 18 inches tall atmaturity, with a spread of 18 inches. Its foliage tends toremain dense right to the ground, not requiring facerplants in front. It grows at a medium rate, and under idealconditions can be expected to live for approximately 15years. As an evegreen perennial, this plant will typicallykeep its form and foliage year-round.
This plant should only be grown in a shady location. It isquite adaptable, prefering to grow in average to wetconditions, and will even tolerate some standing water. Itis not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution, and will benefitfrom being planted in a relatively sheltered location.Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zoneover the growing season to conserve soil moisture. Thisspecies is not originally from North America, and parts ofit are known to be toxic to humans and animals, so careshould be exercised in planting it around children andpets. It can be propagated by division.
