The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith’s FC. It wasn’t until 1923 that the Tadcaster Albion name was adopted. In the early years the club played in the local York League. In 1948 Albion won the York League. They continued competing in the York League during the 1950’s & 60’s.

Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town.

Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Bark-ston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues.

Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park.

In 1973 the club joined the Yorkshire League Division 3 and were promoted in 1975 & 1977 to reach Division 1, relegation was to follow in 1979 & 1980.

In 1982-83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, originally in the NCEL Division Two North before league reorganisations led them to Division One in 1991. They rarely finish in the top half of the league in the 1990’s and finished bottom in 2001-2 & 2003-4.

At the start of 2004-5, Jim Collis became manager and at this point fortunes on the

pitch started to improve dramatically. In his first season, Albion finished 5th in the league, the following year a 3rd place finish meant promotion was missed by one point.

Jimmy Reid took over as manager in 2006, but his time was blighted by off the field problems. An attempted hostile takeover by dissident committee members took a massive amount of money to fight. Then in Novem-ber 2007, an attempted arson attack on the clubhouse caused a lot of damage.

Paul Marshall took over at the start of 2008-9, in his first season he played mostly local players and the team struggled and finished 17th. In 2009-10, with an influx of a few new key players, Albion won the NCEL Division One title.

In 2010, Rob Northfield, took over as Chairman of Tadcaster Albion (2010) Ltd, and the club became a company limited by guarantee.

Albion finished fourth in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division and won the NCEL President’s Cup, beating Farsley AFC 5-1 in the final. That was followed by an 8th place finish and last season they finished 6th.

Rob Northfield resigned a few days before the start of this season and i2i Sports Ltd agreed to take effective control of the club and company, with Matthew Gore becoming the new Chairman. In i2i’s first season in charge, the club narrowly missed out on promotion having gone on a 25-game unbeaten run which led to them being named Robbie Savage’s “non-league team of the day” on Radio Five Live.

Welcome to our second game of the season against Nostell Miners Wel-fare who have travelled here tonight from New Crofton near Wakefield. Like TAFC, Nostell Miners started the season with a defeat - going down 2-0 away to Maltby Main. Both sides will be keen to make amends, so tonight’s match is bound to be a competitive game.

We were obviously disappointed with Saturday’s defeat to Shaw Lane Aquaforce. As we predicted, they were a strong and well-organised side, and we fully expect them to be one of the top teams in the NCEL Premier Division this season.

Expectations are extremely high at Tadcaster Albion this season, and some of our players are still learning how to cope with these expectations. Injuries, a red card and an own goal didn’t do us any favours either, but we need to put the game behind us and focus on putting points on the board.

Nostell Miners are a strong side with a long history, and they are sure to want to capitalise on our dis-appointing first result. Fortunately we are blessed with a fantastic team spirit here at TAFC, so we will regroup and push on together, as there is a long season ahead of us. As we keep saying via our social media, it is a marathon, not a sprint.

Hopefully you’ll all have noticed the big improvements made to the pitch over the summer. The feed-back we’ve had from the players has been excellent, and it has held up well throughout the recent heavy rain.

Enjoy the game, and thanks again for your support.

Make your house a home with Calcaria Carpets & Furnishings!

Club HistoryNostell Miners Welfare FC

Records exist that a team from Nostell Colliery won a Wakefield district football competition in the 1890’s. The club has photo-graph’s of Nostell Colliery teams from 1915 & 1921. At that time the football field was not in the present location but on two sites fairly close by.

The miners welfare was formed in 1928 after the purchase of the land by the Miners trust fund. The sum of £400 was paid to a local land owner for 4.5 acres which includes the land on which the present ground is situated.

A miner’s welfare football team was formed and enjoyed early success. The club owns a medal donated by a former player from the 1930’s and a photograph of the team who won the Wakefield District League in 1938.

After the war the welfare provided much needed recreation for the local community and the football team was successful in several annual football competitions.

In the late fifties a team from the Welfare visited Belgium to Com-pete against local opposition, a feat unprecedented at that time. The club are proud owners of the trophy won on that successful tour.

In the late 60’s the club had a period of sustained success, Winning several Wakefield dis-trict competitions and eventually being selected in to the West Yorkshire league, lifting the league and Cup double in the 1966/67 season. However the successful team eventually broke up and the club went back to the Wakefield League in the early 1970’s. Enjoying relative success the club began to develop again, two teams were formed, the first team joining the West Yorkshire league in 1982.

Following mining subsidence to the ground, fund raising of over £30,000 allowed the pitch to be levelled off, drainage installed and other ground improvements. However Nostell Colliery was closed.

The nearby colliery houses (1st to 7th street) were demolished and the Welfare Struggled to survive. The football continued through this difficult period. Promotions through the divisions of the West Yorkshire league eventually led us through to our present NCEL premier division status.

The most successful period in the clubs distinguished history was about to begin with the appoint-ment of Alan Colquhoun in the late 1990’s.

After initially struggling in the Premier League the Club grad-ually improved, eventually being crowned Champions of the West Yorkshire Premier League lifting the corresponding cup and ap-pearing in 3 consecutive finals, 2 County Cup final appearances and lifting 6 Wakefield & District trophies among other successes.

Off the field the introduction of the Coalfield Regeneration Trust Encouraged other people to invest in the Miners Welfare. Renamed Crofton Community Centre approximately £1.5 million has been secured to provide the present facilities with Sport Eng-land, Football Foundation and the FA providing substantial sums of money to help the football side of the developments.

With the improvements on and off the field a successful application to the Northern Counties East League was made heralding a new and exciting venture for the Club.

Since gaining promotion to the NCEL, Nostell finished a re-spectable 4th in their first sea-son 2006/7. Due to the Unibond league reforming its structure, along with one NCEL going to the wall for financial reasons, Nostell gained promotion to the NCEL Premier league A terrific first sea-son in the premier league 2007/8 saw Nostell finish 5th, having led the division for the first quarter.

This was followed by a disap-pointing 2008/9 where they fin-ished 13th after a congested run in. However Nostell who were the underdogs beat Scarborough Athletic over 2 legs to win the “Presidents Cup”, probably the highest point of Nostell’s recenthistory.

During season 2008/9 Nostell had their first player to be signed for a football league club. Stock-port County signed Oli Johnson who impressed during a friendly fixture.

After one season at Stockport Oli has since signed for Norwich City, with his goals helped Norwich to become 1st division champions.

A 9th place finish in 2010-11 sea-son was followed in the next two season’s with a 17th place in both seasons. The club now has a very strong youth policy in place and has already seen a few play-ers developing in to the first team squad.

Following a poor start to the new season, long serving manager Alan Colquhoun has stepped down and Darren Holmes and Gareth Hamlet have Jointly taken over at the helm.
