A. Verify that subfloor surfaces are smooth and flat within tolerances specified for that type of work and are ready to receivecarpet tile.

B. Verify that wall surfaces are smooth and flat within the tolerances specified for that type of work, are dust-free, and areready to receive carpet tile.

C. Verify that subfloor surfaces are dust-free and free of substances that could impair bonding of adhesive materials to subfloorsurfaces.

D. Cementitious Subfloor Surfaces: Verify that substrates are ready for flooring installation by testing for moisture and alkalinity(pH).1. Test in accordance with Section 09 05 61.2. Obtain instructions if test results are not within limits recommended by flooring material manufacturer and adhesive

E. Verify that required floor-mounted utilities are in correct location.3.02 PREPARATION

A. Remove existing carpet tile.B. Prepare floor substrates as recommended by flooring and adhesive manufacturers.C. Remove subfloor ridges and bumps. Fill minor or local low spots, cracks, joints, holes, and other defects with subfloor filler.D. Apply, trowel, and float filler to achieve smooth, flat, hard surface. Prohibit traffic until filler is cured.

3.03 INSTALLATIONA. Starting installation constitutes acceptance of subfloor conditions.B. Install carpet tile in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.C. Blend carpet from different cartons to ensure minimal variation in color match.D. Cut carpet tile clean. Fit carpet tight to intersection with vertical surfaces without gaps.E. Lay carpet tile in square pattern, with pile direction parallel to next unit, set parallel to building lines.

PART 1 GENERAL1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Surface preparation.B. Field application of paints.C. Scope: Repainting of existing painted surfaces. Finish all interior and exterior surfaces exposed to view, unless fully

factory-finished and unless otherwise indicated, including the following:1. Exposed surfaces of steel lintels and ledge angles.2. Mechanical and Electrical:

a. In finished areas, paint all insulated and exposed pipes, conduit, boxes, insulated and exposed ducts, hangers,brackets, collars and supports, mechanical equipment, and electrical equipment, unless otherwise indicated.

C. Samples: Submit three paper "draw down" samples, 8-1/2 by 11 inches in size, illustrating range of colors available for eachfinishing product specified.1. Where sheen is specified, submit samples in only that sheen.2. Where sheen is not specified, submit each color in each sheen available.3. Allow 30 days for approval process, after receipt of complete samples by Architect.4. Paint color submittals will not be considered until color submittals for major materials not to be painted, such as

masonry, have been approved.D. Samples: Submit two painted samples, illustrating selected colors and textures for each color and system selected with

specified coats cascaded. Submit on to simulate board,or metal products or drywall submit on heavy poster board orhardboard., 8 x 10 inch in size.

E. Certification: By manufacturer that all paints and coatings comply with VOC limits specified.F. Manufacturer's Instructions: Indicate special surface preparation procedures.G. Maintenance Data: Submit data on cleaning, touch-up, and repair of painted and coated surfaces.H. Maintenance Materials: Furnish the following for Cobb County School District's use in maintenance of project.

1. See Section 01 60 00 - Product Requirements, for additional provisions.2. Extra Paint and Coatings: 1 gallon of each color; store where directed.3. Label each container with color in addition to the manufacturer's label.

1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCEA. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified, with minimum three years

documented experience.B. Applicator Qualifications: Company specializing in performing the type of work specified with minimum 3 years experience.

Applicator shall be approved by pain manufacturer in writing. Approval shall indicate the following:1. Manufacturer has instructed applicator in the installation of specified material.2. Applicator has been engaged in satisfactory application of materials on project of similar scope for at least three years.

C. Primers, undercoat paint and finish coat paint materials shall be products of a single manufacturer unless otherwisespecified.

1.06 MOCK-UPA. Prior to production application of paint coatings a "Standard of Quality" application shall be prepared for inspection and

acceptance by the architect. Said application shall be made on a representative area of the project with the approvedcoatings applied in accordance with this specification by the coatings applicator.

B. A representative of the manufacturer of the special coatings shall be present at the job site to observe this application,inspect surfaces and conformance to specification.

C. Upon completion of the sample application, a representative of the contractor, the manufacturer, and architect shall inspectand approve this area. Upon acceptance, but architect, said earlier should become this standard of quality for subsequentcoating applications and application contractor shall be responsible for maintaining the septic quality through out thesubsequent application.

D. For painting of previously painted surfaces an independent testing laboratory and the paint manufacturers representativeshall determine the recommended coating prior to application.

1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLINGA. Deliver products to site in sealed and labeled containers; inspect to verify acceptability.B. Container Label: Include manufacturer's name, type of paint, brand name, lot number, brand code, coverage, surface

preparation, drying time, cleanup requirements, color designation, and instructions for mixing and reducing.C. Paint Materials: Store at minimum ambient temperature of 45 degrees F and a maximum of 90 degrees F, in ventilated

area, and as required by manufacturer's instructions.D. Store materials in a dry, well ventilated, covered location.E. maintain neat, clean conditions in storage area; remove rags and waste materials at end of each day's work.

F. Close containers at end of day's work. Leave no materials open.1.08 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Do not apply materials when surface and ambient temperatures are outside the temperature ranges required by the paintproduct manufacturer.

B. Follow manufacturer's recommended procedures for producing best results, including testing of substrates, moisture insubstrates, and humidity and temperature limitations.

C. Apply no paint in spaces where dust is being generated.D. Do not apply exterior coatings during rain or snow, or when relative humidity is outside the humidity ranges required by the

paint product manufacturer.E. Do not apply paint to damp or wet substrates.F. Minimum Application Temperatures for Latex Paints: 45 degrees F for interiors; 50 degrees F for exterior; unless required

otherwise by manufacturer's instructions.G. Safety Precautions:

1.2. Prohibit smoking in storage area.

H. Provide lighting level of 80 ft candles measured mid-height at substrate surface.PART 2 PRODUCTS2.01 MANUFACTURERS

A. Provide all paint and coating products used in any individual system from the same manufacturer; no exceptions.B. Provide all paint and coating products from the same manufacturer to the greatest extent possible.

1. Substitution of other products by the same manufacturer is preferred over substitution of products by a differentmanufacturer.

A. Standard of quality: products specified herein are as manufactured by the listed companies and shall be the basis of thestandard of quality. Products of other acceptable manufacturer specified, similar immaterial, type and quality may beacceptable for use subject to approval us specific product data submittal. All products should be the manufacturershighest-quality product.

B. For a products other than those of the manufacturers listed at the standard quality as specified in painting schedule suchproducts have been selected to achieve specific results and substitutions will be allowed only in accordance with product oroptions and substitutions section

C. All primers and finish products shall be totally lead free.D. Paints and Coatings: Ready mixed, unless intended to be a field-catalyzed coating.

1. Provide paints and coatings of a soft paste consistency, capable of being readily and uniformly dispersed to ahomogeneous coating, with good flow and brushing properties, and capable of drying or curing free of streaks or sags.

2. Provide materials that are compatible with one another and the substrates indicated under conditions of service andapplication, as demonstrated by manufacturer based on testing and field experience.

3. For opaque finishes, tint each coat including primer coat and intermediate coats, one-half shade lighter thansucceeding coat, with final finish coat as base color.

4. Supply each coating material in quantity required to complete entire project's work from a single production run.

5. Do not reduce, thin, or dilute coatings or add materials to coatings unless such procedure is specifically described inmanufacturer's product instructions.

E. Miscellaneous materials:1. Paint thinners and tints shall be products of the same manufacturer as paints or prove by by the manufacturer for use

with their products.2. Shellac, turpentine, patching compounds and similar materials required for execution of work should be compatible

with painting materials and services applied.F. Paint and staying colors should be a schedule with final approval based on brush out sample submittal.G. All paints use must meet IEQC 4.2: low – emitting materials – painting and coating requirementsH. Primers: Where the manufacturer offers options on primers for a particular substrate, use primer categorized as "best" by

the manufacturer.I. Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Content:

1. Provide coatings that comply with the most stringent requirements specified in the following:a. 40 CFR 59, Subpart D--National Volatile Organic Compound Emission Standards for Architectural Coatings.

2. Determination of VOC Content: Testing and calculation in accordance with 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24),exclusive of colorants added to a tint base and water added at project site; or other method acceptable to authoritieshaving jurisdiction.

J. Chemical Content: The following compounds are prohibited:1. Aromatic Compounds: In excess of 1.0 percent by weight of total aromatic compounds (hydrocarbon compounds

containing one or more benzene rings).2. Acrolein, acrylonitrile, antimony, benzene, butyl benzyl phthalate, cadmium, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-n-butyl

phthalate, di-n-octyl phthalate, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, diethyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, ethylbenzene,formaldehyde, hexavalent chromium, isophorone, lead, mercury, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone,methylene chloride, naphthalene, toluene (methylbenzene), 1,1,1-trichloroethane, vinyl chloride.

K. Sheens: Provide the sheens specified; where sheen is not specified, sheen will be selected later by Architect from themanufacturer's full line.

L. Colors: To be selected from manufacturer's full range of available colors.1. Selection to be made by Architect after award of contract.2. Allow for minimum of three colors for each system, unless otherwise indicated, without additional cost to Cobb County

PART 3 EXECUTION3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Do not begin application of coatings until substrates have been properly prepared.B. Verify that surfaces are ready to receive work as instructed by the product manufacturer.C. Examine surfaces scheduled to be finished prior to commencement of work. Report any condition that may potentially affect

proper application.D. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before

proceeding.E. Test shop-applied primer for compatibility with subsequent cover materials.F. Measure moisture content of surfaces using an electronic moisture meter. Do not apply finishes unless moisture content of

surfaces are below the following maximums:1. Gypsum Wallboard: 12 percent.2. Plaster and Stucco: 12 percent.3. Masonry, Concrete, and Concrete Unit Masonry: 12 percent.4. Interior Wood: 15 percent, measured in accordance with ASTM D4442.5. Exterior Wood: 15 percent, measured in accordance with ASTM D4442.6. Concrete Floors and Traffic Surfaces: 8 percent.

3.02 PREPARATIONA. Clean surfaces thoroughly and correct defects prior to coating application. Surfaces to receive finishes to be dry and free of

debris, oil, dust or other deleterious materials. Before application of coatings, quality assurance inspection shall have beenperform and approved by the paint manufacturer.

B. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate underthe project conditions.

C. Remove or repair existing coatings that exhibit surface defects.D. Treat mildewed surfaces with a solution of 1 quart hypochlorite bleach with 2 ounces a trisodium phosphate to 1 gallon of

water rinse and allowed to dry prior to painting.E. Remove or mask surface appurtenances, including electrical plates, hardware, light fixture trim, escutcheons, and fittings,

prior to preparing surfaces or finishing.F. Seal surfaces that might cause bleed through or staining of topcoat.G. Remove mildew from impervious surfaces by scrubbing with solution of tetra-sodium phosphate and bleach. Rinse with

clean water and allow surface to dry.

H. Concrete and Unit Masonry Surfaces to be Painted: Remove dirt, loose mortar, scale, salt or alkali powder, and otherforeign matter. Remove oil and grease with a solution of tri-sodium phosphate; rinse well and allow to dry. Remove stainscaused by weathering of corroding metals with a solution of sodium metasilicate after thoroughly wetting with water. Allow todry. All CMU shall be pod and thoroughly primed with block filler if previously unpainted.

I. Gypsum Board Surfaces to be Painted: Fill minor defects with filler compound. Spot prime defects after repair.1. Applies shellac, maximum 2 pounds cut to not, pitch and resinous sap would prior to application of the first: pink. For

stained surfaces, treat knots, pitch, and resinous sapwood in accordance with stained manufacturer'srecommendations.

2. For surfaces to receive paint finishes, feel nail holes, and pinholes and the Enfield window panels, cracks, joints anddefects will spackling compound. Apply after the first coat of paint.

3. For surfaces to receive transparent finish, the alone mail holes, cracks and defects will would fill a matching finishcolor.

1. Sand using hand block or vibrator stand up with 120 180 grit sandpaper.2. Cleaning entire wall surface to be painted with clean water containing 2 ounces trisodium phosphate per gallon of

water. Let air dry.N. Plaster Surfaces to be Painted: Fill hairline cracks, small holes, and imperfections with latex patching plaster. Make smooth

and flush with adjacent surfaces. Wash and neutralize high alkali surfaces.O. Asphalt, Creosote, or Bituminous Surfaces to be Painted: Remove foreign particles to permit adhesion of finishing materials.

Apply latex based sealer or primer.P. Insulated Coverings to be Painted: Remove dirt, grease, and oil from canvas and cotton.Q. Aluminum Surfaces to be Painted: Remove surface contamination by steam or high pressure water. Remove oxidation with

acid etch and solvent washing. Apply etching primer immediately following cleaning.R. Galvanized Surfaces to be Painted: Remove surface contamination and oils and wash with solvent. Apply coat of etching

primer.S. Corroded Steel and Iron Surfaces to be Painted: Prepare using at least SSPC-PC 2 (hand tool cleaning) or SSPC-SP 3

(power tool cleaning) followed by SSPC-SP 1 (solvent cleaning).T. Uncorroded Uncoated Steel and Iron Surfaces to be Painted: Remove grease, mill scale, weld splatter, dirt, and rust.

Where heavy coatings of scale are evident, remove by hand or power tool wire brushing or sandblasting; clean by washingwith solvent. Apply a treatment of phosphoric acid solution, ensuring weld joints, bolts, and nuts are similarly cleaned. Prime paint entire surface; spot prime after repairs.

U. Shop-Primed Steel Surfaces to be Finish Painted: Sand and scrape to remove loose primer and rust. Feather edges tomake touch-up patches inconspicuous. Clean surfaces with solvent. Prime bare steel surfaces. Re-prime entireshop-primed item.

V. Interior Wood Surfaces to Receive Opaque Finish:1. Sand using hand block or vibrator stand up with 120 180 grit sandpaper.

W. Exterior Wood Surfaces to Receive Opaque Finish: Remove dust, grit, and foreign matter. Seal knots, pitch streaks, andsappy sections. Fill nail holes with tinted exterior calking compound after prime coat has been applied. Back primeconcealed surfaces before installation.

X. Wood Doors to be Field-Finished: Seal wood door top and bottom edge surfaces with clear sealer.Y. Metal Doors to be Painted: Prime metal door top and bottom edge surfaces.

3.03 APPLICATIONA. Apply paint only one moisture content of surfaces is within manufacturers recommend limits. Supplies and materials using

clean brushes, rollers or spraying equipment.B. Applied Materials@rate recommended amount of paint manufacturer for surfaces being painted, less 10% for losses.C. Comply with manufacturer's recommendations for drying time between coats.D. Sand and dust between codes to remove visible defects when viewed from a distance of 5 feet.E. Where portion of finish on drywall partition is damage or unaceptable, refinish the entire surface of partionF. Make edges of paint a joint and other materials or call is clean shot without overlapping. Primer coats may be omitted or

surfaces specified to receive factory applied from a primer is compatible with finish coats. If factory applied primer coats arenot compatible with finish coats, substituted bond coat or other surface preparation meaaures as recommended by paintmanufacturer for specific finish coats at no additional cost to owner.

G. Paint exposed grilles and registers in public spaces.H. Remove and protect hardware,accessories, device plates, lighting fixtures, factory finished work and similar items or provide

in-place protection prior to painting adjacent surfaces. Upon completion of each space, carefully replace all removed items.I. Paint handrails, guardrails, bollards and miscellaneous metal fabrication items exposed to view in the finish schedule.J. Paint exposed piping and ductwork in occupied areas same as adjacent wall surfaces.K. Finished all edges of exterior doors same as faces.L. Finished coat shall be smooth, free of brush marks, streaks, of pile up of paint, skipped or missed areas.M. Remove unfinished louvers, grilles, covers, and access panels on mechanical and electrical components and paint

separately.N. Spray applications: Use only where not accessible or impractical to use roller and/or brush applications; coverage shall be

equal to brush coats.O. Exterior Wood to Receive Opaque Finish: If final painting must be delayed more than 2 weeks after installation of

woodwork, apply primer within 2 weeks and final coating within 4 weeks.P. Apply products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.Q. Where adjacent sealant is to be painted, do not apply finish coats until sealant is applied.R. Do not apply finishes to surfaces that are not dry. Allow applied coats to dry before next coat is applied.S. Apply each coat to uniform appearance.T. Dark Colors and Deep Clear Colors: Regardless of number of coats specified, apply as many coats as necessary for

complete hide.U. Cover finished work of other trades and surfaces not being painted concurrently and prefinished items.V.
