Isolated success is not unusual. Consistent excellence is a much more difficult benchmark toachieve.

As the 2002-2003 academic year gets underway, that is the goal for Evergreen teams.

The 2001-2002 year was a breakthrough for us. Three teams qualified for the NAIA NationalChampionships and men’s basketball reached an all-time high water mark for Geoducksports with a #6 national ranking. Women’s soccer returned to the post-season for thesecond consecutive year as well.

What’s next? That’s up to each individual student-athlete… you!

Those of you returning to the college have just contributed to a year of remarkable growthand improvement. Those of you coming into the program are in a great position to help yourteams move to higher degrees of excellence.

Playing in the Cascade Collegiate Conference has never been an easy task. Albertson,Concordia, Eastern Oregon, Northwest, Oregon Tech, Southern Oregon and Western Baptistall produced NAIA nationally-ranked teams a year ago. Within the Pacific Northwest region ofthe NAIA are strong independent competitors, including Simon Fraser, a four-team winner ofthe Sears Director's Cup for overall excellence.

Now, Evergreen -- with outstanding facilities, coaches and, most importantly, student-athletes– has joined that list. The Geoduck is now a force to be reckoned with, regionally andnationally.

Hopefully, your involvement in Geoduck athletics will extend beyond the court, playing fieldor pool. You can have a prominent voice by being active with the Student Athletic AdvisoryCommittee, as well as by being active in the Services and Activities Fee Board, and othercollege committees. Come cheer for Evergreen's other teams. Help our staff promote andmarket your efforts to the community. I welcome your opinion about all campus issues, particularly athletics!

Again…..Welcome!

The Student-Athlete

An extremely important part of thatcommitment is the understanding thatintercollegiate athletes are, first andforemost, students. As such, eachstudent-athlete has the responsibility tofulfill clear expectations. These include:

Meeting all academic responsibilities, including regular class attendance and thecompletion of all assignments in a timelymanner.

Complying with all rules and regulation ofthe NAIA; understanding that it is eachstudent-athlete’s responsibility to be fullyaware of the rules and regulations.

Meeting regularly with faculty and advisors.

Striving to be involved as a full-fledgedmember of the college community andmaking a strong effort to derive as much aspossible from the educational experience. This includes establishing open and

mature relationships with faculty and thestudent body at large.

♦Understanding the support resources thatare available in the college’s AcademicAdvising program; assuming theresponsibility to seek help when it isneeded.

Understanding that the assumption ofpersonal responsibility is at the heart of the educational experience. All student-athletes should constantly be aware thatthey represent the college, the conference, and their team. Upper-class student-athletes should consciously strive to serveas exemplary role models for new student-athletes.

Making a complete commitment toacademic integrity –it is absolutelyessential that every student be thoroughlyfamiliar with the honor system and that allaspects of college life be conducted inaccordance with the honor system.

Honor System and Code of Ethics

College Policies and ProceduresStudent-athletes are subject to thecollege’s academic, financial, and non-academic rules and regulations as is thestudent body. We encourage you to referto The Evergreen State College “rights andresponsibilities yours and ours” manual forspecific rights, policies, and procedures.

Academic Honesty PolicyAcademic honesty is a necessity in alearning community. It makes coherentdiscourse possible, and is a condition forall sharing, dialogue, and evaluation. Allforms of academic dishonesty, includingcheating, fabrication, facilitating academicdishonesty and plagiarism are violations ofthe Social Contract and may be violationsof the Student Conduct Code. Academicdishonesty may result in penalties assevere as expulsion from your academicprogram.

Program CovenantIf you are a member of an academicprogram at Evergreen, (as opposed totaking an individual contract, or a singlecourse), your program will probably have acovenant. Commonly, the covenantexplains program expectations, anddescribes who is responsible for differentaspects of program management. Thecovenant is also likely to explain theprocedures to be followed if disputes ariseamong members of the program, and thegrounds and procedures for the expulsionof students from the program.

If you are not aware whether youracademic work is governed by a covenant, check with the faculty, or check to seewhether a covenant has been filed in theAcademic Deans’ office.

Code of Ethics for AthletesThe purpose of intercollegiate athletics isto provide an opportunity for you todevelop your potential as a skilled athletein an educational setting. Your publicexposure in the competitive arena and themedia place you among the most visiblegroups in the college community, the Cityof Olympia, and in Thurston County. Whatyou do and the way in which you do it areoften highlighted, placing you in a publicposition, which requires exemplarybehavior.

Remember, as a student of Evergreen youare totally responsible for your ownbehavior. You are expected to obey thelaws, rules, and regulations of all these“communities”; and if you violate their laws,be prepared for the penalties that may beimposed.

Your behavior has a definite impact on thereputation of the athletic program and onthe attitude that the “communities” havetoward you and your teammates.

Your conduct will be closely scrutinized asyou sit in the classroom, as you compete, and as you travel. Particularly, youngchildren will look upon you as a role model, and it is important that your personalconduct be above reproach at all times.

In a nutshell, you will be expected toconduct yourself with integrity, sportsmanship, honesty, pride, andhumility.

Evergreen Sports Medicine Team works tomeet the limited medical needs of student-athletes during their competitive season. Itis our objective to maintain your health andto prevent injuries.

Athletic Division ResponsibilityThe Division of Athletics and Recreation isnot financially responsible for the costs ofmedical services incurred throughparticipating in varsity athletics. Pleaseconsult your head athletic trainer if youhave any insurance questions.

Health InsuranceIt is the student athletes’ responsibility toobtain primary insurance. Consistent withother collegiate institutions, the Division ofAthletics and Recreation looks to theparents’ or guardians’ health andaccidental insurance as primary coverageof any injury or illness, which may occurduring official practices or competitions. However, the college does carry asecondary medical policy with a $250deductible to help defray costs associatedwith major treatment for injury.

If the student-athlete has no privatemedical insurance, a policy is available atminimal cost to the student athlete.

Another option is to get your name on thewaiting list to receive subsidized insurancethrough Washington Basic Health (1-800-826-2444). If you are interested in any ofthe options above please talk with the headcertified athletic trainer.
