IntroductionWelcome to the EMC ViPR and VMware Integrations Lab: Policy-Based StorageManagement. This lab will focus on how and why the RainPole Systems Companymanages their physical and virtual storage infrastructure with EMC ViPR.
With EMC's ViPR, you can manage and offer a consistent set of storage services, independent of specific arrays. It uses a VASA provider (vStorage API for StorageAwareness) to interact with all the arrays you want to manage -- one single end point vs.multiple different ones. ViPR automates many of the workflows associated withprovisioning storage as well as remote replication.
The Challenge:
The problem facing many vSphere users today is, how do you easily match virtualizedapplication requirements with available storage resources, especially when yourenvironment includes arrays of many different types and from different vendors, supporting potentially thousands of applications?
The Solution:
Policy-Based Storage Management from EMC ViPR and VMware. This combinationprovides a differentiated, out-of-the-box automation solution that's significantly betterthan either product on its own, or any other solution available in the marketplace today.
• No need to create manual workflows on either side• No lengthy back-and-forth between the virtualization team and the storage team• A consistent way of doing things, independent of the specific storage array• Less time, less hassle, more speed, more efficiency with fewer errors

Welcome to RainPoleRainPole is uniquely positioned in the Public Cloud hosting arena as one of the firstcompanies offering cloud services as their core business model.
Business Challenge
RainPole Storage Admins need a storage management solution that abstracts physicalstorage, pools aggregated capacity, and automates and centralizes management acrossheterogeneous storage, including commodity storage, in a scale-out architecture. And, itneeds to do this while both preserving and leveraging the intelligent capabilities of theunderlying hardware platforms; storage cannot be reduced to just a bunch of disks.
Some the their specific asks
• Scalable automated storage management system• Storage integration with automation tools & cloud stacks• Protect and extend existing investments• End-to-end visibility

Solution - EMC ViPR Software DefinedStorage with VMware IntegrationsWith EMC's ViPR, you can manage and offer a consistent set of storage services, independent of specific arrays. It uses a VASA provider (vStorage API for StorageAwareness) to interact with all the arrays you want to manage -- one single end point vs.multiple different ones. ViPR automates many of the workflows associated withprovisioning storage as well as remote replication.
EMC ViPR
EMC ViPR provides two tight integrations with VMware:
• EMC ViPR plug-in for vCenter Orchestrator, which gives VMware's vCloud Suitethe ability to consume the storage service profiles that ViPR provides (via SPBM:Storage Policy-Based Management)
• EMC Analyitics Pack for VMware vCenter Operations to visualize anomalies, workloads, capacity remaining, reclaimable waste, and provide dashboards forViPR managed storage
This lab will demonstrate how these combined solutions work together.
ViPR enables RainPole to manage heterogeneous storage environments, including thirdparty arrays and commodity storage like Amazon S3 or even DropBox. RainPoledevelopers are also able to build an API interface to any standard storage to bemanaged by ViPR.
ViPR enables RainPole to deliver:
• Heterogeneous storage array management• Policy based management of storage pools abstracted from hardware• Leverage the capabilities of the underlying hardware platforms• Centralized Storage network management with Unified storage views across the
Data Center• New interface support
HOL-PRT-1461
Page 5HOL-PRT-1461
ViPR Software-Defined Storage
EMC ViPR does not sit in the data path for file and block stores. This ensuresapplications can access storage and all its underlying value and data servicesembedded in the storage arrays. It also enables administrators to centralize dataprovisioning and data management tasks, and allow any applications to access file andblock data.
HOL-PRT-1461
Page 6HOL-PRT-1461
ViPR Storage Asset Discovery and Abstraction
ViPR discovers the arrays and all their corresponding storage pools and ports. ViPR thenhides the complexity of all the underlying storage arrays and exposes their corefunctionality as data services while retaining the unique attributes of the arrays. Storageadministrators then create Virtual Storage Arrays and Pools in ViPR that represent setsof capabilities required by unique application workloads.
HOL-PRT-1461
Page 7HOL-PRT-1461
Key Component - ViPR PlatformViPR Platform:
• Discovers and registers all ViPR-supported arrays• Abstracts physical storage into a virtual pool where storage services such as
provisioning, metering, cataloging, and delivery can be automated• Delivers storage through a self-service catalog, and• Centralizes management across the virtual storage environment• Virtualizes your physical storage and configures your virtual storage arrays,• Automates storage tasks and centralizes management across physical and virtual
environments• Discovering and registering arrays is the first of 3 easy steps to virtualize,
automate, and centralize storage.
ViPR Controller
Through an easy-to-use portal, the storage administrator defines the storageenvironment that it wants ViPR to manage. They point to storage arrays, SAN switches, and data protection devices. ViPR then discovers and abstracts physical storagearrays with all their unique capabilities into a single pool of virtual storage. This is avery simple process as you will learn in this lab. The storage administrator simply pointsto the array and ViPR discovers the rest. This step only needs to be done at thebeginning, when ViPR is first deployed, or at anytime the administrator wants to add orchange the configuration.
ViPR Controller Architecture
• Distributed as virtual appliance (software-only package)• Load balancer service evenly distributes workloads across VMs and maximize
throughput
HOL-PRT-1461
Page 8HOL-PRT-1461
• Workflow automator and controller services that execute workflow steps onstorage infrastructure
• Coordinator service coordinates tasks between distributed processes
HOL-PRT-1461
Page 9HOL-PRT-1461
ViPR Software Architecture
ViPR makes a multi-vendor storage environment look like one, big virtual array. ViPRuses software adapters that connect to the underlying arrays, similarly to how devicedrivers enable universal device compatibility with a PC. ViPR exposes the APIs so anyvendor, partner or customer can build new adapters to add new arrays. This creates anextensible “plug and play” storage environment that can automatically connect to,discover and map arrays, hosts and SAN fabrics

Conclusion
EMC ViPR is a storage virtualization software platform that abstracts storage fromphysical arrays into a pool of virtual shared resources in a flexible self-serviceconsumption model.
ViPR abstracts the storage control path from the underlying hardware arrays so thataccess and management of multi-vendor storage infrastructure can be centrallyexecuted in software.
In our next exercises you will review the ViPR's ability to provide pre-configured self-services via Service Catalog and create custom services for multi-vendor storageinfrastructure.

ConclusionWhat we have learned in this lab
You have experienced the capabilities of how a Policy Based Storage ManagementVMware environment can be set up with EMC ViPR. As a Software-Defined Storagelayer, it abstracts storage from physical arrays into pools of virtual shared storageresources that enable the delivery of innovative data services across arrays. RainPolecan now Leverage the management, automation and orchestration tools in their VMwareenvironments to more effectively discover, consume, monitor and control those storageresources.
As storage policy based management becomes more instrumental for automation andorchestration of virtual environment, VMware and EMC recognize the value of enablingthe integrations of ViPR plug-in for VMware tools.
Even complex, heterogeneous, multu-vendor environments with every conceivableapplication and workload can be made simple to manage, extensible and open forinnovation in value-added data services.
As a result the RainPole storage team is able to simply expose a consistent set ofstorage services in ViPR to be consumed, and their virtualization teams can discover, consume, monitor and leverage that storage resource.
• No need for manual workflows on either side• No lengthy back-and-forth between the virtualization team and the storage team• A consistent way of doing things, independent of the specific storage array• Less time, less hassle, more speed, more efficiency, and fewer errors
And this is another example of how EMC and VMware are working together to make thevalue of SDDC real.
