NetApp Virtual Storage Console forvSphere Web ClientWelcome to the NetApp Hands-On-Lab, featuring our latest version of the VirtualStorage Console (VSC) for the vSphere Web client! I hope that you get a good indicationof the work we've done to completely rebuild the VSC for this new UI. In this lab, wehope you'll enjoy working through all of the most common workflows. If you have ANYquestions or feedback, developers that wrote the software that you're using areproctoring the Hands-On-Lab and would love to come and help you out, or receive anytips about something that could be done better. All you have to do is click the HELPbutton above, and someone will come to see you! I hope you enjoy the lab. If you'dprefer to email us feedback, you can send it to [email protected].

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that both the VMware and NetApp software you'reworking with today are currently in Beta, and subject to change.

ENJOY!

VMware vSphere Web Client

VMware vSphere has a new face, known as the Web Client. This new interface bringswith it a new efficient way of doing things, multiple vCenter support leveraging SingleSign-On (SSO) services, and a new plugin framework that vendors can use to developbeautiful, highly-functional plugins that seamlessly integrate into this new design.

NetApp Virtual Storage Console

We've rebuilt the user interface of the Virtual Storage Console (VSC) to match the flow, look, and feel of the vSphere Web client. In the Summary screen, you will be able tocheck the overall status of your vSphere environment, including Storage Systems,Automatic Discovery status and findings, and Host Configuration compliance.

Welcome to the new interface!

As we progress through the lab, you'll begin to get more and more familiar with this newuser interface. NetApp has deeply integrated with this interface, and you will notice ourblue logo wherever these integrations have taken place. The web client has a muchricher API than the traditional thick/C# client, which allows us to integrate in a moregranular fashion. Let's take a look at some of the places where these integrations occur.

NetApp Virtual Storage Console

On the Home screen, you'll notice the blue "N" in several places. Let's refresh all of theviews to insure we get the most out of our experience in this lab. Click on VirtualStorage Console.

Storage-centric Role-based access

Traditionally, even against best practice, people would simply use root credentials toauthenticate to a storage controller. We have gone to great lengths to make it easier toimplement Role-Based Access Control within both the storage controllers as well aswithin vSphere. Let's take a look at some ways to use RBAC for storage controllers. ClickStorage Systems.

Modify storage system credentials

Right click on the cluster and select Modify to update the credentials used to log in to astorage controller.

RBAC

NetApp storage systems support role-based user management, and you can createspecialized accounts per storage system to limit what an admin can and cannotperform. The NetApp VSC fully supports this construct, and accounts created on storagecontrollers can be used to authenticate a VSC user so that the admin is able to perform

his specified tasks. Traditionally, this was required to be done at the command line ofeach storage controller. However...

RBAC User Creator

...enter the RBAC User Creator. One of the lead developers of the NetApp VSC has alsocreated this Community-Supported tool that gives an admin a simple-to-use GUIinterface to quickly add a set of user accounts to a specified storage controller. Byselecting which auxiliary software you intend to use, the RBAC User Creator can simplifyalmost all of the necessary configuration. Let's take a quick look at it and create a useraccount that we will use later. Locate the icon on the desktop and double-click on theshortcut.

NFS for VAAI PluginvStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) is a method of offloading storage-relatedtasks to an intelligent array, eliminating the I/O between ESXi hosts and storagecontrollers. For SAN, this is natively built-in to both hosts and most storage systems. ForNFS, a plugin (VIB) is required to be installed on each host. This can be accomplished bysimply running an esxcli command at the host terminal, but a lot of checks cannot bedone to insure it is installed properly. Using VSC to deploy the NetApp NAS VAAI plugininsures that compatible ESXi hosts and storage systems are available, as well asenabling and setting several parameters FOR you, eliminating the guess-work.

Home --> Virtual Storage Console

From the Home screen, click on Virtual Storage Console.

NFS VAAI Tools

Inside the Virtual Storage Console "command center," click on NFS VAAI Tools.

Plugin version

In your production environment, there is a separate VIB file to download and place in aspecified folder. You can find instructions on how to do that in the Install & Admin Guidefor VSC. For the purpose of this lab, we have done this for you. You should see theversion number detected. Click the link to Install on Host.

Install the NFS VAAI plugin

Since NFS VAAI is only supported in vSphere 5.x and Data ONTAP 8.1.x, VSC does aquick background check to insure that your hosts and storage systems are compliant. Ifany of your hosts are not compliant, they will be greyed out and you are unable toselect them. Since both of our hosts are vSphere 5.5, we can move ahead. Weintentionally started your lab with esx-02a in Maintenance Mode so that we couldperform the install here. Select the checkbox for esx-02a and click Install.

Creating DatastoresNow that our ESXi hosts and NetApp storage controllers are properly configured, it'stime to create some Datastores. The old methods of doing this natively with the vSphereinterface, per-host, are a bit cumbersome. With the VSC, we allow you to create a newDatastore once, and attach it to all hosts at the same time! Let's create one so you cansee what we mean.

From the Home screen, click Hosts and Clusters.

Resizing & Destroying DatastoresOne of the most troubling things in IT is leaving a mess behind when something getsdeleted. VSC programatically cleans up auxiliary configuration items when deletingdatastores, and makes resizing a datastore literally a 1-step change. Let's walk throughboth.

Home screen

From the Home screen, click on Storage.

VMworldHOL Datastore

Remember the VMworldHOL datastore we created earlier? Turns out, it needs to bebigger than 10GB. Let's resize it to 20GB. Right click on the VMworldHOL datastore -->NetApp VSC --> click on Resize.

Set the New Datastore Size (GB) to 20 and click OK.

In a matter of seconds, we have expanded the size of the volume on the storagecontroller, and updated the mounts to all ESXi hosts. For NFS, this operation alsosupports shrinking.

Destroy Datastore

Imagine a scenario where someone requesting a datastore changed their minds and donot need it anymore. We can quickly and cleanly destroy this datastore, and this processwill also clean up any exports, igroups, etc that are associated with it. Right click on theVMworldHOL datastore --> NetApp VSC --> click on Destroy.

It's important to note that when destroying a datastore, all contents within will also bedestroyed. If this list is blank, it means the datastore is empty and you're safe toproceed. Click OK.

Backup a VMVSC leverages NetApp array-based snapshots to take consistent backups, with theability to build a schedule, without ever leaving the vSphere client. These can beexecuted as Instant Backups of either VMs or entire Datastores, or scheduled as jobs tobe run at pre-determined time. Let's take a look at both...

VMs and Templates

From the Home screen, click on VMs and Templates.

If you leave the name field blank, it will automatically name it for you with a uniquename based on the VM or Datastore backed up, and include a date-timestamp in thename. Let's change ours to "VMworldBackup" and click OK. It will quite literally be donein seconds.

Note: If the VM is contained in a volume that is part of a SnapMirror relationship, youcan check the box to Initiate a SnapMirror update once the backup completes toreplicate the latest backed-up information off-site. Backup a Datastore

For Datastores, the process is similar. We simply execute the workflow against adatastore rather than a VM, and all objects contained within that datastore are includedin the snapshot backup.

In this pane, we have a lot of granularity. We can restore individual VMDK's to theoriginal or different datastores, we can select ESXi host the restored VM will land on, orwe can simply restore the entire VM to it's original state. For the purpose of this lab, since it is the most popular, let's leave the defaults selected, and click Next.
