A stunning personal account of Janet Merlo's twenty years of service in the
RCMP, with an introduction by Linden MacIntyre. In 2012, Janet Merlo was
among the first female RCMP officers to publicly allege she had experienced
sexual harassment and gender discrimination while serving in Canada`s
national police force. The women kept silent for so long, she says, because
there was no one to tell. In this courageous memoir, Janet recalls how her
love of policing was soured by covert and overt sexism within the ranks and by
an institutional culture that valued toughness and silence over ethics and
accountability. Tracing her twenty years in uniform, Merlo’s story details the
highs and lows of her career in the RCMP – while her mental health and
personal life disintegrated. Eventually, the cost of keeping quiet was simply
too high, and her story emerges as a lone, brave voice seeking change.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS
Janet Merlo is a retired member of the RCMP. Originally from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, Merlo spent most of her twenty year policing career on Vancouver Island. Merlo now lives with her two daughters in St. John’s, Newfoundland. She is the representative plaintiff in a proposed class-action
lawsuit against the RCMP.
REVIEWS
The impunity of RCMP officers who use obscenity and sex and power as tools
in their trade is spreading like a stain on a national icon. Will disclosure force
change? No One to Tell is a test case for an organization that was once the
pride of the nation. - Sally Armstrong, author of Ascent of Women

I always knew I’d be the perfect mother. So far, I’ve perfected the fetal
position. When Vicki Murphy brought her new baby home from the hospital,
she expected to be greeted by fluttering butterflies and harp-strumming
cherubs. You know: the way it is in diaper commercials and the “Yay, You’re
Preggers!” books. LIAR, LIAR, MATERNITY PANTS ON FIRE! Instead, she
had a baby boy who didn’t sleep for a year, whose cry was the official anthem
of Hades, and who could suck the nipples off a cyborg. That’s just the
beginning of this collection of tell-it-like-it-is rants and musings from the
creator of MotherBlogger.ca and mother of the fiery-spirited (and fiery-haired)
boy better known as Turbo Ginger. Murphy brings her inimitable voice to a
book about mothering that fills in what the other how-to guides leave out – and
reminds us that when it comes to parenting, we’re all motherfumblers, feeling
our way along in the dark, doing the best we can, hoping to come out with our
minds intact and a kid we haven’t screwed up – too badly.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Vicki Murphy is a self-described “writer, mother and hot mess” from Badger’s
Quay, Newfoundland. She is an advertising creative director, a frequent
Huffington Post contributor, and the creator of popular blog motherblogger.ca
– where Vicki chronicles her misadventures in motherhood. She lives in
Torbay, Newfoundland, with her husband Andrew and their son, Max.

The fishery, the seal cull, the settlement, the culture—the history of the
province of Newfoundland and Labrador has been shaped and witnessed from
the deck of sea-going vessels, and those vessels were sparred with local
timbers, planked and rigged by the hands of our master shipbuilders. From
east to west, north to south, Calvin Evans covers every coast and bay in a
sweeping chronicle of craftsmanship and productivity. While deftly countering
the outdated argument that our builders were inferior craftsmen, this history is
augmented by exhaustive lists of every builder on record from every corner of
the province. Impeccably researched and contextualized, Calvin Evans’s
Master Shipbuilders of Newfoundland and Labrador offers an indispensable
addition to the story of our past.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Calvin D. Evans is a retired University Librarian. Born in Newfoundland, Evans
has lived and worked in six Canadian provinces, and is the author of two
previous books. For 100 years his family built ships for the Labrador and
Grand Banks fishery, and he has a continuing avid interest in maritime
history.

Rogers Communications Award for Non-Fiction 2013, Short-listed
A soldier dies, a community vanishes…and a story is found.
When Steven Norris—a lieutenant with the famed Royal Newfoundland
Regiment—dies at the battle of Gueudecourt in 1916, his family business is
left without an heir. With the end of the Norris family mill, the once thriving
town of Three Arms disappears.
Almost 90 years later, a high-school theatre class mounts a successful
musical based on the life and death of Steven Norris. When the curtain drops,
a group of actors, teachers, and parents embark on a camping expedition to
Three Arms where they stumble upon the actual artifacts of Norris’s young
life.
A compelling history—part narrative, part documentary, part drama—Joan
Sullivan’s In the Field reminds us how one soldier’s great sacrifice can
resonate long after he has fallen.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
J. M. Sullivan is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in The Globe and
Mail, The Telegram, This Magazine, and on CBC Radio. She also works in
theatre as a director, actor and playwright. She lives in St. John’s with her

The third volume in the best-selling Nursing History series. Overseas
recruitment of nurses has been part of nursing in Newfoundland and Labrador
since Wilfred Grenfell brought the first two nurses to Labrador in 1893. It is
believed that hundreds of nurses have come from away to work, live, and
sometimes stay in the province. This book shares the stories of 41 nurses
who immigrated to NL from 1949 to 2004 and who made a tremendous
contribution to healthcare in the province. Their stories shed light on the
challenges they encountered in the workplace and with the province’s lifestyle
and culture. The stories are funny, poignant, and highlight the courage and
commitment of these nurses along with the strong attachment they grew to
have for their adopted home.

Despite his potential, extraordinary skating skills, and unmatched dedication
and endurance, George Faulkner never made the Montreal Canadiens’ roster.
But he was trying to break into a famous hockey dynasty never before seen in
professional hockey. His story does not just begin and end with the
Canadiens; in fact, George Faulkner had more than one opportunity to play in
the NHL. His career covers four decades. Many believe the most exciting
hockey years were in Harbour Grace during the 1960s where he created a
dynasty of his own – the Conception Bay Ceebees. The success of the NAHA
in those years seemed entirely dependent on Faulkner and his kid brothers.
Their on-ice performances were so outstanding, they turned the league into
one of the best senior hockey organizations in the nation. Richard Winston
‘Dickie’ Moore said, “George Faulkner was the best player I ever saw who
never made it to the NHL.”
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
T.P. Rossiter is a retired educator. During his time in education, he worked as
a teacher, administrator, and curriculum coordinator. He has co-edited high
school texts in English literature for the provinces of NL, NB, ON, and P.E.I.
and has edited several anthologies. He has also written a teacher resource
manual for high school poetry. Several of his short stories have appeared in
local media over the past 10 years.

Danny Williams: A Profile examines the seven-year political career of former
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams. With photos by
renowned photojournalist Paul Daly and evocative text by long-time political
columnist Russell Wangersky, the book captures the nature and style of one
of the country’s most popular political figures. His career included everything
from battles of words with other premiers and with prime ministers to
conversations with constituents who felt they could call him “Danny."
Consistently carrying the support of more than 70 per cent of his province’s
decided voters, Premier Danny Williams retired suddenly in 2010 at the top of
his game. Sometimes irascible, and other times self-deprecating and
charming, the charismatic Williams left a huge mark, especially for a premier
of a small-population province. Occasionally seeming like an ardent
Newfoundland and Labrador nationalist, other times professing a great love for
the nation of Canada, he battled his way to major successes and left office
when he said he felt there were no significant fights left to wage. With
photographs that skillfully capture a more personal side of the man than is
usually revealed, the book seeks to be a small window on Danny Williams,
particularly for people who wonder both what he has done for the province and
what he is truly like.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS
Paul Daly was an award winning photojournalist in Ireland prior to moving to
Newfoundland and Labrador. He garnered a local following as “that
photographer from The Independent." His images have been featured in
newspapers and magazines nationally and internationally.

Rogers Communication Award for Non-Fiction 2011, Winner
Winner of the 2010 Rogers Communications Award. Sheilagh O’Leary and Rhonda Pelley spent two summers travelling from Bonavista Bay to the Great Northern Peninsula and to the communities of the south coast. The women they interviewed shared unique life stories filled with hard work, love, heartbreak, and family. Island Maid documents, with photos and words, the thoughts and lives of these women. It is also the chronicle of a journey, a feminist road-trip taken during one of the most tumultuous times in
Newfoundland’s modern history.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS
Rhonda Pelley is a Newfoundland writer and artist whose work has been seen
in galleries and publications locally and internationally. She lives in St. John’s
with her partner Frank Barry and her two cats Henry and Lucy.
Sheilagh O’Leary is an award-winning art photographer from St. John’s. She
produces striking collections of black-and-white nudes and portraits with an
intimate exploration of the subject and their relationship to the Newfoundland
landscape. Her previous book, Human Natured: Newfoundland Nudes,
explores almost two decades of her B&W nude photography.
REVIEWS

Out Loud is a collection of more than fifty essays by people affected by
mental illness. There are essays by those who have experienced mental
illness themselves, by family and friends, by community members, and by
professionals who deal with mental illness. The voices here are ones of hope,
pain, and honesty. The true meaning in this collection is found in the
willingness of the essayists to step forward and share their experiences in
hopes of lessening stigma and broadening the conversation about mental
illness.

The Newfoundland armed forces suffered devastating losses during World War
I. Known unto God is a memorial to the men in these forces who died during
the war and who have no known graves. The book is also a companion guide
to the Memorial Bronze Tablets that list their names. The tablets were first
unveiled at the Newfoundland Memorial Park in Beaumont-Hamel, France, in
1925. Replicas of the tablets were erected in 2009 in Bowring Park in St.
John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Known unto God celebrates these men’s contributions and includes period
memorabilia and photographs from private and public collections, some of
which have never been published.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS
Frank Gogos was born and raised in St. John’s, NL. He holds a degree in
history and Newfoundland studies. An ardent historical researcher, he has
covered such topics as Newfoundland and the Great War, culture, and
genealogy, and chases the ghosts of individuals long past.
Morgan MacDonald is an emerging artist/bronze sculptor who has created
The Rower at Quidi Vidi Lake, A Time at George Street, and the replica of the
Bronze Tablets for Bowring Park (all in St. John’s, NL). Born in Corner Brook
and transplanted to St. John’s, MacDonald attended the Visual Arts Program
at Grenfell College, and holds a business degree from Memorial University.
His passion for Newfoundland is evident in all his work.

As Silk Sails entertainingly demonstrates, existing records show that women
of the Atlantic region were owners of boats, ships and waterfront properties
from as early as 1650. Women’s involvement in early fishing adventures as
sole owners and “co-partners in trade” was real and substantial. This sample
of approximately 500 Newfoundland women depicts a hardy, durable and
tenacious woman who was more than equal to the challenges and
opportunities of her time. The study is complemented by interviews with some
of the women who had owned working ships from the 1930s to the 1960s. A
companion volume on more than 1,000 women ship owners of the Maritime
provinces, Ontario and Quebec is in progress.

The devastation of the North Atlantic cod stocks, particularly the tremendous
stocks of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Grand Banks, has become an
icon for the unsustainable relation between human exploitation and Nature.
Here, George Rose tells the full story of that devastation, in scientific detail,
for the first time – from the formation of the North Atlantic marine ecosystems
to the massive stock declines in the last half of the 20th century. Politics and
the fisheries are inextricably entwined. In Cod, Rose recounts the many
political influences on the fisheries over several centuries and describes how
neglect from the late 1800s onward led to insufficient scientific knowledge and
little protection for the stocks when massive Euro-Russian fleets targeted the
Grand Banks after World War II, destroying the greatest fishery the world has
known. Cod is no armchair account, but a controversial one that includes
original information on the North Atlantic fisheries.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
George Rose is one of Canada’s best known and most respected fisheries
scientists. He is widely considered to be the authority on the Newfoundland
and Labrador cod fishery. He was born in St. John’s, then attended school in
Ontario. He holds degrees in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from the
University of Guelph, in biology from Laurentian University, and holds a
doctorate in biology from McGill University. His main career interests have
been in the fisheries of the North Atlantic and in world-wide conservation,
particularly in Africa, on which he has published over 100 peer reviewed
publications. He lives on Three Island Pond in Paradise, Newfoundland.
REVIEWS
“This is an ambitious effort to tell the entire epic tale…It's a triumph of a book.
Cod is written in plain and lively language. Lushly illustrated and assiduously
researched, it cuts no corners but still deftly manages to weave the
fascinating human history of Newfoundland into the saga of its complex
marine ecology.” - Terry Glavin, Vancouver Sun

end of his military career, he took a job with the Department of External
Affairs, spending two years at the Embassy in Moscow. Later he was a radio
operator offshore in Venezuela, the North Sea, and on the Ocean Ranger.
After this he began working for the United Nations as a Communications
Director, travelling to Khartoum, Sudan, with the UN World Food Program
during a time of rampant famine. To Be Frank brings to life the most
memorable adventures of this extraordinary Newfoundlander.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS

Newfoundland and Labrador, where he enjoys reading, writing, and music. He
has had numerous and varied careers throughout his life that have taken him

REVIEWS
"Stolid, compassionate, self-assured, Christian, loyal. Frank Dyke would
appear to be a man more formed by the 19th century than the 20th." "[Dyke's]
observations of the enemy show a sensitivity that was rare in those terrible,
tumultuous days, and he weaves together enough personal and historical
detail to produce a vivid, striking portrait of a young, impressionable but
centred soldier caught up in catastrophic events" "A quick and easy read." -

Does the massive Kraken lurk off the coast of Newfoundland? Does Bigfoot
wander our forests and barrens? Have mermaids tempted fishermen in St.
John’s Harbour?
From stories of Native tradition and accounts of early European explorers to
contemporary sightings of predatory big cats and skulking lake monsters,
Here Be Dragons catalogues the strange creatures said to be prowling the
coves and forests of Newfoundland and Labrador. Author Bruce Hynes
combines history, anecdote, and folktale to deliver the unexplained, the
frightening, and the truly unusual in this engaging and thoroughly entertaining
book dedicated to all those who claim to have seen something peculiar
snaking beneath the swells or shifting through the shadows in our own
backyard.
ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR
Bruce Hynes was born the son of a blacksmith in Norris Arm, Newfoundland
and Labrador, in 1940. His publications include The Eastport Peninsula: A
People of the Sea and Soil, The Noble Newfoundland Dog, and “One Hundred
Years of Canadian Military Mapping.” Apart from rescuing Newfoundland dogs,
he is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
REVIEWS
“Hynes writes engagingly well, and his book shows extensive research. His
commitment to the subject is academic caliber, while his writing style is
relaxed and reader-friendly. Hynes allows himself the occasional wry
comment regarding witness accounts, but he demonstrates serious regard for
his subject. ‘Here Be Dragons’ is a great read, and it’s as informative as it is
enjoyable.” - - The Western Star
