It’s not about the numbers; it’s all about the mission. Thanks to your support, the Lutheran Camping Corporation continues to build on years of successful outdoor ministry. It’s not that numbers are unimportant. They tell the tangible part of the story. For example, in summer of 2008, a total of 2,408 persons participated in summer camp ministry, including youth camps, confirmation camps, family and adult camps, Wittel Farm programs, retreats, and congregation-based day camps. What numbers don’t indicate is how and to what extent those campers were impacted by their time at camp. That is something much harder to quantify. However, anyone who spent time at Kirchenwald, Nawakwa, or The Wittel Farm witnessed ministry in action and saw spiritual growth and faith formation as campers enjoyed Christian fellowship, explored God’s creation, worshiped together, and were encouraged to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Growing now for the future 2008 was a year of growth and forward thinking for the Lutheran Camping Corporation. 221 acres were added to the Nawakwa ministry site, ensuring that the nature of the camp will be preserved for future generations of campers and retreat guests. The enlarged site also presents opportunities for ministry growth as new programs and ministry activities are developed.

We’re not doing it aloneThe Lutheran Camping Corporation values its strong relationships with the congregations of the Lower Susquehanna Synod and shares with them the common goal of advancing the Church. At the Lutheran Camping Corporation, we sincerely appreciate the support of those congregations and their members, our volunteers, our financial donors, and all those who help us fulfill our mission. Thank you once again.

By the glow of the lanterns’ light, you can see a row of terrariums and plastic tanks filled with frogs, black snakes, and a baby box turtle named Sam. Field guides and reference books sit atop shelves supported by the sawed-off branches of a maple tree. Eight thick tree-trunk stools with chainsaw carvings encircle an impressive 200-pound disk of tulip poplar wood that serves as both a tabletop and as a teaching tool for nature education. (It was at least 178 years old, by my ring count.)

These are just a few of the many exciting sights inside Kirchenwald’s new Creation Exploration Center. Dedicated in the spring of 2008, the yurt’s unique structure is perfect for housing the camp’s nature programs, teaching campers about our roles as stewards of God’s creation. But the idea of creation extends beyond the curved walls of our yurt. This summer, 524 campers created friendships, new memories, and a stronger understanding of their relationship with God. Sixty-four staff and volunteers created a safe and caring environment to foster the social and spiritual growth of those who attended camp. Congregations in the Lower Susquehanna Synod helped to create opportunities for families to send their children to camp. And the financial gifts of those who support the work of outdoor ministry sites, like Kirchenwald, created and continue to create our ability to provide a quality experience for campers and retreat groups in the programs we offer and in the facilities we develop.

With the creation of new programs for youth and adults, camp continues to be a place where God’s presence is felt, faith is renewed, and the Church is strengthened. Kirchenwald is committed to working in loving service and support of congregations, and we are thankful for those who contribute to our ministry with their time, talents, and gifts.

So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female, blessed them and said, “Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and all the wild animals. Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. But for all the wild animals and for all the birds I have provided grass and leafy plants for food.” -Genesis 1:27-30

It is always a pleasure to share Nawakwa’s story with the many visitors we receive throughout the year. I enjoy talking about our humble beginnings as a training ground for Sunday School teachers, started by a man with a passion for a holistic approach to Christian Education. If the visitors are former campers, familiar names always rise to the surface: Rapid Reg Deitz, Pastor Bishop, Miss Grove… We talk about s’mores, cairn services and pool water temperatures, apple butter and boisterous singing around a campfire – elements of Nawakwa that have remained constant over the years. While Nawakwa is certainly steeped in tradition, we continue to look outward and forward. It is with some amount of pride that I point out the improvements, renovations, and additions since our first camping season in 1929. The removal of hazard trees is painful as we lose their beauty and shade, but protecting our campers and buildings is of greater importance. Program development is an ongoing process and is reflected in our brochures and the way we use our resources. Eighty years into this grand adventure we call Nawakwa, we continue to stretch and grow to meet the needs of God’s people.

In the summer of 2008, Nawakwa welcomed 606 campers to resident camp, 84 of whom attended through the generosity of camperships. (That’s 84 campers who would not have attended without the generosity of our donors.) Congregational day camps served 79 children at 4 sites. We hosted 437 confirmation campers in 4 confirmation camps. 47 students attended the LSS Leadership Camp. We welcomed 87 children from the Adams county migrant farmworker community to three day camps held in partnership with the G-10 Summer Program. 80 families attended our two Family Camps and 14 people attended Elder Camp. 52 staff and 53 volunteers pulled weeds, peeled carrots, vacuumed the pool, and made sure that everyone who entered our gates knew that he or she is a beloved child of God. That is our greatest tradition of all. Thanks be to God.

Wittel Farm truly is a quiet place apart. It is a joyful and peaceful place where God’s presence is experienced by small groups which gather there for study, worship and prayer, by individuals, and by children who come to participate in the Summer Day Program.

A rich and diverse ministryDuring the summer, the Farm is the location for The Wittel Farm Summer Day Program (WFSDP). In 2008, 115 youth accompanied by 39 adults from 15 congregations participated in this creative, exciting, unique Christian education event. The 2008 program, titled Mission Possible!, focused on lessons of service and discipleship. Participants enjoyed games, worship, bible study and hands-on learning activities. They also completed several service projects, including the construction of a labyrinth and a food drive for a local food bank. The 2009 WFSDP is Exploration of God’s Creation.

In the non-summer months, the Wittel Farm ministry shifts attention from serving youth to providing ministry for adults. Congregations utilize the Farm for small group retreats, meetings, and council retreats. Individuals enjoy the Farm for personal spiritual retreats. The Lutheran Camping Corporation also sponsors small group retreats, Days Of Prayer with the Bishop, Advent and Lenten Days Apart, and a Garden and Tea Party.

We are thankful to all those who support and advance the ministry of the Wittel Farm.

“It is a rare blessing to be able to get away from the pressures and hurried pace of daily life to be still and know God. I walked up to the gazebo this evening to watch the sun set. Several deer emerged from the woods and wandered across the field. I felt at one with God’s creation surrounding me. Thank you for this wonderful place of peace and solitude”. -Comment from an anonymous Wittel Farm visitor.

2008 was an exciting year of new beginnings for the Lutheran Camping Corporation as we completed the purchase of 221 acres of new land at our Nawakwa site. We officially launched our IMAGINE…Capital Campaign with our sights set on a Celebration goal of $2.5 million. (By the first quarter of 2009, we had passed $750,000 overall for the campaign in gifts, pledges, and expectancies.)

We want to thank all of the volunteers who helped in so many ways with all manner of skills and abilities and countless hours of selfless service. We could not offer the scope and type of ministry that we do without their invaluable contributions of time and talent.

You will find lists of financial contributions designated for particular parts of the ministry of the LCC on the related pages of this report. Those figures are included in the following summary report of gifts and contributions that were received in 2008.

As we move through 2009, we continue to benefit greatly from our very generous friends who support us in many and varied ways. We thank our God for all that you do and pray that together we will continue to experience God’s gracious presence and have our faith renewed.
