Table HIST002R_2. Death rates for 113 selected causes by 5-year age groups, race and sex: United States, 1979-98 Plate 2 of 2 Age groups 45-49 years to 85+ years The mortality trend data in this table are classified by the Ninth Revision, International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) and sorted into the list of 113 selected causes of death developed for the Tenth Revision (ICD-10). ICD-10 was introduced with 1999 mortality data. Data in these tables were constructed to be most comparable with the ICD-9 cause-of-death titles used in the list of 113 selected causes of death. These data are the most appropriate ICD-9 data to use with published comparability ratios describing the discontinuities between ICD-9 and ICD-10. Used in conjunction with the comparability ratios, this table provides trend data comparable to that published for data year 1999 and beyond. Although in some cases categories from the list of 113 selected causes are identical to those in the old list of 72 selected causes of death used with ICD-9, it is important to note that many of these categories are not comparable with categories in the list of 72 selected causes even though the cause-of-death titles may be the same. Deaths rates are per 100,000 population in specified group. Rates are based on populations enumerated as of April 1 for census years and estimated as of July 1 for all other years. Rates for 1991-1998 have been revised based on intercensal population estimates for those years and may differ from rates previously published. Description of symbols used in this table: * Figure does not meet standards of reliability or precision - Quantity zero 0.0 Quantity greater than zero but less than 0.5 --- Category not applicable
