INTRODUCTION

Captovate has an extensive track record working with subject matter experts to plan, design and develop effective digital, instructional experiences. Our portfolio includes working with government agencies as well as private organisations to create tools that simplify and streamline information sharing achieved through quality e-learning and user experience design and development.

Our team includes e-learning practitioners who are highly skilled in a variety of design, e-learning and multimedia products. We also have a variety of digital designers, web developers and online application specialists, all of whom are supported by our digital strategists and project managers.

We are immensely proud of our work and love to hear from our satisfied customers. One of our cornerstone projects was delivered to Menzies School of Health Research’s Rheumatic Heart Disease Australia, we received this response from the Senior Manager:

“As I mentioned when we spoke recently, the package looks great, has very good functionality and I am very pleased with it. I’m aware that you and the rest of your team have put in a big effort on this project and it shows. Please pass on my thanks and gratitude. Jonathan previewed the package to international experts, including education experts in the field of developing tools for use in RHD throughout Africa and Asia at the recent World Heart Federation conference in Dubai. I thought you might like to share his message to the team: FYI, I think this looks fabulous. I also showed it briefly to a few people at the World Congress of Cardiology in Dubai, and they agreed. Jonathan…..I am satisfied a great deal has been achieved in the past 8 months. Again, a big thank you to your team at Captovate.” Dale Thompson, Senior Manager, Rheumatic Heart Disease Australia

We look forward to delivering a quality product for your project.

Kind regards   Karen Hawkes E-learning Specialist - Director, Captovate

AUTHORING TOOLS

Our key eLearning practitioners have extensive experience with a variety of design, eLearning and multimedia products. We have thorough experience in using the Articulate suite of authoring tools. Our more recent projects have been built using Articulate Storyline 2, in addition to this we have a catalogue of projects created with Articulate Storyline and Articulate Studio 09-13. We have also created modules using Adobe Captivate.

Captovate’s success in the area of eLearning development can be attributed to the unique combination of high level graphic design expertise and comprehensive technical authoring skills. These competencies are complemented by the innate understanding of educational design philosophies that the many years work experience in educational settings affords.

CREATING A CHARACTER/AVATAR

Captovate supports the development of a character or Avatar, as this creates a more personalised experience for the learner. The following article outlines the value of this approach https://www.aspinelearning.com.au/use-and-benefits-of-avatars-in-virtual-learning/

We understand the complexity of developing a character that adequately responds to the demographics of your diverse audience. We can create characters in a variety of ways.

Turning real photographics into graphics.  This process sees our graphic designers manipulating real imagery, or adding a graphical treatment to the photo. This may result in the image being de-identifiable.

Using the characters that are provided via the Articulate package. This provides different face and hand gestures.  It is possible to change the characters skin, hair, eye colour and clothing.

ASSESSMENT/QUIZ FEATURES

Articulate Storyline provides various options for assessment tools, allowing for short answer questions, multiple choice and interactive, drag and drop questions. Combining these functions with visual scenarios creates a powerful active learning space.

The following are just some of the possible Articulate activity functions:

All of these can be tailored to your look and feel, and all include graphics and photos. Below are some examples of how these templates assessment have been implemented.

PAST PERFORMANCE

The following provides an overview of our experience in developing similar training materials.

PREVET

PreVET is an initiative of the Department of Education and aims to provide real outcomes for students

that leads to an Apprenticeship or further study in Adult vocational education, or sustainable and

successful employment.

PreVET contains a suite of 18 topics that include an online magazine, lesson plan, games, support

materials and quizzes. Its aim is to introduce positive ideas around work culture and showcase the

relevance of literacy and numeracy across a variety of industries. Eighteen introductory online topics

engage students in middle school with contextual learning.

Each topic shares stories from a range of Northern Territory role models within the workforce. The

topics provide age and industry appropriate literacy and numeracy activities linked back to the

Australian Curriculum.

Captovate was part of a wider group of resource contributors and played a crucial role in building many

of the module graphics, animations, interactions based on the content provided by the client.

ONE21SEVENTY ELEARNING MODULES

One21Seventy is an organisation designed to support Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) practices

in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care. The eLearning package that is being

developed by Captovate is targeted at primary health care workers, helping them to understand what

CQI is in the context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health care, and how they can develop

successful quality improvement processes and outcomes.

Captovate was engaged by One21Seventy to design and develop a range of resources, including their

public website, and the eLearning package, consisting of 5 detailed learning modules. The modules

cover content that explains CQI, as well as CQI processes, and data capture techniques.

Captovate has created the package using Articulate Storyline, and undertook a range of video editing,

voiceover, and talent sourcing tasks, as well user

interface design for the modules, and custom

design of suitable avatars for content delivery.

We also assisted in review and refinement of

scripts, both pre-production, and after

interactions had been developed, to ensure

continuity.

Development software:

RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE AUSTRALIA

Rheumatic Heart Disease Australia (RHDA) is a national project based at Menzies School of Health

Research. The comprehensive project by Captovate included a full website, library database, five

module eLearning packages and supporting print materials.

Captovate worked closely with the education officer at RHDA to create the scripts and voice overs,

custom design and build the avatars, graphics, templates, interactions and assessment tools.

Captovate provided all the educational design and creative direction. The project went live in July

2012. Off the back of that project we were engaged to build 15 further modules for Senior Clinicians.

One of the project parameters was that the modules ran direct from the website, not from within a

Learning Management System. This required Captovate to scope out, design, and implement an easy

to use interface to support visitors moving into and out of the individual modules. It was important that

users could access resources and core introductory information about each module before

commencing, but also that they could move seamlessly from one module to the next, without being

conscious of actually moving between web pages.

Additionally, we designed and developed the functionality whereby the organisation could capture

user feedback through a survey at the end of the module. Upon completion of the survey, user details

are captured and the system dynamically generates an emailed ‘completion certificate’ with RHD

branding.

POWER AND WATER ELEARNING SUITE

Captovate was commissioned by the Power and Water Corporation to produce a suite of staff training

eLearn modules on the use of their asset management system, an essential tool in their operations

used by all staff.

The brief by the client was very specific. They provided training manuals and access to their system in

order for us to write the scripts. This also enabled us to generate screenshots and screencasts of the

system displaying processes such as data entry. Once we had developed the content for the modules,

we then created interactive assessments based on these processes.

Power and Water requested that we used an Adobe eLearning tool (coincidentally called Captivate) to

produce this extensive resource.

TERRITORY INSURANCE OFFICE (TIO) SECURITY ELEARNING MODULES

In 2014, Captovate completed a series of security themed elearning modules for TIO, the Territory’s

provider of insurance and financial services.

The brief was to translate their current PowerPoint slides into an interactive resource that staff and

contractors use, both on and off site to learn about TIO’s security policy and procedures. The

requirement of the product was to ensure that staff are compliant with TIO’s Liability Insurance Act.

TIO requested we use content from five existing PowerPoint presentations to deliver key learning

objectives to a range of audience groups within the TIO environment. As such, Captovate reviewed and

updated the existing content and flow, then created eight online learning modules with assessment

tasks that the learner is required to complete at the end of each module. The format of the training

ensures that the learner is only required to complete the module(s) relevant to their role at TIO, as

opposed to all audience groups receiving all training.

The client did not want voice overs, so an additional challenge for the designer was fitting text heavy

content into each screen but still maintaining flow, interactivity, engagement and readability.

An additional requirement from the client was to make the often ‘dry’ content more engaging and

exciting, in fact the brief was to add a bit of fun.

TIO is planning to install a Learning Management System, but in the short term needed to provide

access via their intranet. Captovate maintains and supports TIO’s intranet, and was able to build a

secure entry point for internal and external access.

At the time of go live, TIO was using IBM Lotus. However 3 months later, this changed to People

Stream. This change required some small variations to file formats, along with further troubleshooting

and testing by Captovate.

DRIVESAFE LEARNER DRIVER PROGRAM

Platform: Articulate Storyline

Summary of project

Captovate has had a long and positive working relationship with the Northern Territory Government

Motor Vehicle Registry’s DriveSafe NT Remote Program to produce online learning materials for the

Driver Education and Licensing Program. The remit was to refine the three hour face to face workshop

into an online tool, which could either be presented by trained facilitators or worked through

independently. The online tool needed to be delivered via various formats, including mobile tablet

devices, delivered both on and offline and with and without voice overs. The additional requirement

was to provide guided instruction in three indigenous languages.

Captovate developed the product in Articulate Storyline. The client provided the PowerPoint

presentation they used for face to face facilitation, a 300 page driver manual and the legislation. In

addition to running a workshop with content experts, Captovate’s educational designers used these

materials to develop the content and the script, and our e-learning developer brought the story to life

through graphics and interactions using Articulate Storyline.

The final stage of the product was to develop a mobile app that allowed the students to practise some

key concepts, such as familiarising themselves with road signs and the rules in negotiating

roundabouts. This was executed through extracting the activities designed in Storyline and creating a

mobile phone only version of the content.

This project had an additional scope that included our educational designers mentoring the

Department of Transport trainers to deliver the training modules. This process allowed for an agile

approach, and enabled us to trial and refine the module content before finalising it.

Pleased with the outcome of the initial program, the DriveSafe team extended the program to revise

the content for their urban audience. Captovate is currently finalising the website to house the online

modules.

Recently DriveSafe contacted Captovate to scope another variation of the training materials, in

conjunction with the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation, with the purpose of educating

tourist bus drivers.

Year of delivery:

2015/2016/2017

Outcomes and outputs

INFORMATION PRIVACY PRINCIPLES TRAINING - DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Platform: Articulate Storyline - Moodle

Summary of project:

The NT Department of Education, Information Technology and Information Services Division requires

consultancy services for the technical development and delivery of a digital content package on NT

Information Privacy Principles.

The scope of the services included the development of a digital module for use by all government staff.

The requirement was to create the content and randomised activities to allow the user to learn through

participation. There was also an assessment piece to test the learner's knowledge. The module

included resources that also needed to be graphically designed to match the module’s style. No

voiceovers were required, so a challenge for our elearn team was to make a content heavy subject

matter digestible and engaging.

Training topic: The content for the module focusing on the Privacy Principles under the NT Information

Act
