Dear TA Prep Families, I am reaching out to ask for your help in keeping our campus healthy. I have been receiving students to the medical room who are ill and have been ill before the school day began. For example, a student reported that they have just begun treatment for the flu, some students report that they were ill at home but received medication to lower their fevers, some report that they vomited before arrival. Of course I do try to verify these statements with parents and I always seek to provide support for both the student and guardian. As a working mother, new to the state, with no extended family nearby, I fully understand how difficult it can be to find caregivers to care for sick children and or call out of work. I keep this in mind and try only to call for you to pick up your student when it is absolutely necessary. Reducing the incidence of any school wide outbreak of illness is very important. We continue to practice hand-washing and cover your cough with students but we need you to stay vigilant regarding your student's health as well. Please respect the health and safety of staff and students by keeping sick children home from school. Please adhere to your Health Care Provider's orders as to when your child is able to return to school after illness and provide the proper documentation including this information to the main office or myself. [email protected] The attached form is a guide to help you assess when your child may need to stay home from school. Please read the form and keep it for your reference. As always, please email me with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your attention and consideration to this matter. Hearing and Vision screening Hearing and Vision screening will resume next week Jan 13-17. Please email me if you would like to decline screening for your student. Thank you

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are committed to keeping our campus healthy and we appreciate your continued support!

Please read the following information as a guide to knowing when is it appropriate to keep

students home from school.

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

Deciding when to keep a sick child at home from school is not always easy. While we value

consistent attendance, it is important for a child who is sick, to stay home in the care of an adult,

to get well and to prevent spreading illness to others in the classroom.

WHAT ARE IMPORTANT SIGNS OF ILLNESS?

Some important signs of illness are:

* A temperature of more than 100.ºF * Sore throat

* Nausea or vomiting * Rash or infection of the skin

* Diarrhea * Red or pink eye

* Persistent/severe headache * Stomach pain (severe/persistent)

* Uncontrollable frequent cough * Loss of energy or decrease in activity

* Severe seasonal allergies

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD HAS ANY OF THESE SIGNS?

If your child has any of these symptoms, your child is not permitted at school until he or she is

clear of these systems for 24 hours.

If the symptoms are severe or persist for more than 24 hours, you should contact your

pediatrician. There may be times that your child does not show signs of the above-noted

symptoms but may be ill and not feeling well. You must be alert to your child's health and to

decide when it is best to send him/her to school even if the symptoms above are not present.

Please let the main office know if your student will be out due to an illness by calling 301-422-

3858 or sending an email to your teacher with a cc to the nurse ([email protected]) .

WHEN MAY MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL AFTER AN ILLNESS?

The Centers for Disease Control recommends that individuals stay home “until at least 24

hours after they no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius) or

signs of a fever (chills, feeling very warm, flushed appearance, or sweating) without the use

of fever-reducing medicine.” http://www.cdc.gov/flu/school/guidance.htm

Generally, your child may return to school when he/she is free of signs of illness. However, there

may be times when it is necessary for your child to see your source of medical care before

returning to school. Please consult with your physician’s office in these cases.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF MY CHILD BECOMES ILL AT SCHOOL?

If your child complains of being sick or is not well enough to participate in classroom activities,

they will be sent to the Nurse’s office for assessment and we will contact you directly. It is

important that you provide the school with up-to-date information and phone numbers to call in

case it is necessary to contact you for pick up. Please check your account on Ren Web to make

sure your contact numbers and email address are correct.

We value your support in assisting us in keeping the students healthy and the environment safe.

Please keep this notice for reference throughout the school year.

Thank you,

Jennifer Danticat RN
