Principal’s Message Dear parents, carers, students and the wider school community, It has been another exciting week of teaching and learning at Forbes High School. Students are engaged in rich learning activities across the school and we are coming to the point in the term where assessments are due as well. It is a timely reminder that the Homework Centre is available on a Monday afternoon in the library where students are able to access support and clarification regarding any school work, including assessments. Our team of Year Advisors are always available to support you any way or to answer any questions you may have regarding your child’s learning. School and house pride was on display at the swimming carnival and it was great to see the passion that many students displayed and congratulations to all students who participated, cheered with enthusiasm and made the day a successful one. I would like to congratulate our Age Champions and wish all of our swimmers well at the next level of competition. Thank you to Tara Morrison as the FHS Sport Co‐ordinator for her planning as well as acknowledge the commitment of all staff. It was great to see members of our school community supporting their child on the day. Partnerships continue to be an important focus for us at Forbes High School. Tuesday 9th March will be our next P and C meeting and AGM. I encourage all parents and community members to be involved and come along to the school for the meeting which will commence at 6pm. It is another opportunity to help shape the future of our school and contribute your ideas and vision for the future. Another key partnership is working with our partner primary schools. I met last week with the principals from Forbes North, Forbes Public and Bedgerabong Public to discuss and plan transition for 2021 and beyond. We shared many different ideas from numeracy workshops to English and Drama opportunities. Collaborative practice is a key focus across all of our schools and this week we will have members of our school engage in planning with Stage Three teams. Our collective vision is the seamless transition of students from our partner primary schools to Forbes High School. Attendance is vitally important to your child’s success at school. I have noticed some of our students arriving late to school, this impacts on their learning as any time missed in the classroom is an opportunity lost for deeper learning. Can I ask for your help in having your child arrive to school on time and where possible, organise appointments for outside of school hours. If you are concerned about getting your student to school, please contact the school and we will be able to help and support you.



Principal’s Message Finally, we have suffered a spate of break‐ins recently, and unfortunately, the equipment taken takes time to replace. If you are aware of any information that could assist police to track down any offenders or if you notice something that does not seem quite right, please let us or the police know if it is after hours. Our school is a community resource and your help in ensuring that our school remains free from damage supports us in working with your child. As always, Forbes High School is here to work alongside you in ensuring your child achieves the highest educational outcomes possible. If you need to contact us for any reason, please reach out. Deputy Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Carers, Well it has been an exciting fortnight at FHS, with COVID restrictions being wound back we are seeing life return to some semblance of normality. This change has allowed FHS to run a highly successful swimming carnival and inter school sports is ramping up, including the following opportunities; Opens Netball, Cricket Umpiring, Western Lawn Bowls, Western Swimming, CHS Basketball and Opens Soccer to mention a few. FHS presents a multitude of extracurricular activities on a daily basis and parents are always encouraged to get their students involved. School Expectations – Responsible Behaviour At FHS we have high expectations of student behaviour and this fortnight we are focussing on the core value of Responsibility. Teachers provide students with safe and creative learning opportunities every lesson at FHS. It is the responsibility of students to take on board and act on the reasonable instructions provided by staff and any feedback offered. This could include the following:

‐ Listening to teacher instructions and asking clarifying questions

‐ Being prepared for a lesson by having the correct equipment and uniform

‐ Completing work without distracting others around them

School Attendance I am following up from my previous message, as school attendance has the biggest single impact on a student’s ability to constantly improve their learning the whole time they are at school. If you refer to the table below you can see the cumulative effect that missing even a day a fortnight has upon a student’s ability to finish school successfully.

Tell Them From Me Student Feedback Survey

Tell Them From Me student feedback survey I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW‐wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/student‐wellbeing/tell‐them‐from‐me/information‐for‐parents‐and‐carers. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours during weeks 8‐10.



Support Faculty Report Science Stage 4 have been learning about electrical energy during science. We have been learning how to make a simple circuit in the science lab.

International Day for People with a Disability An amazing day was had on Wednesday 24th February at the Forbes Town Pool celebrating International Day for People with a Disability. Thank you to Forbes Council and FHS SRC members for joining us in the fun filled day.

CAPA Report

Music Update Music students are taking advantage of the music room being open a couple of lunchtimes during the week. There have been some drummers hitting the skins, guitar and bass players as well as keyboard and piano students. Taking advantage of the facilities are Connor Walmsley, Aiden Miller, Claudia Cheney and Jaide Robinson.

The available days during lunch are as follows: Week A Monday and Friday Week B Tuesday and Thursday Interested students should make an effort and come on down to try some instruments. Any enquiries could be directed to Mr Ruttan in D3 or PDHPE/CAPA staffroom.

Swimming Carnival Report

Forbes High School Swimming Carnival Report ‐ Friday 26th February, 2021 ‐ Forbes Olympic Pool

Despite the weather report predicting otherwise, Friday 26th February dawned bright and sunny, marking a very successful and enjoyable swimming carnival. Congratulations to all students who attended on the day and dressed in their house colours. Excellent house spirit was shown by all students who participated in all events earning house points. Congratulations to our house leaders for continuing to build house spirit and encourage everyone to get involved and participate in the day. The winning house for the carnival was Burrabinya closely followed by Gamilaroi, then Wiradjuri and Nguri.

Community News Forbes Hockey Inc 2021 Registration Day will be held on Wednesday 31st March 5.00-6.30pm at the Forbes Tennis Courts. All players who pay their fees on this day will get a discount: $65 Junior $120 Senior. So come up, fill out your registration form and get a discount on your fees. The sooner we get registrations, the sooner the competition can run. After this night all 2021 fees will be $75 Junior $130 Senior. Again this year there will be a NO PAY NO PLAY rule. Players CANNOT take the court unless fees have been paid (even for one game or part of a game when teams are short). This is necessary due to insurance regulations. Forbes Hockey Inc have a Facebook page for any further information feel free to message us, ‘Forbes Hockey Inc.’ The 2021 competition will start Wednesday 21st April.
