From the Head of SHCMS Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you had a relaxing break and are now fully charged to embrace the final term of 2014.

Just a very quick article this week as I have just returned from four days in and around Alice Springs and Santa Teresa on the “Living Champagnat’s Vision Retreat” – a solidarity experience that allow participants to encounter the living spirituality of the desert and experience the Marist ministry of solidarity in Central Australia. It truly was an awesome experience, one that I was able to share with other employees of Marist Schools around Australia, including Mr. Vincent Williams from SHCMS.

The retreat provided plenty of opportunities to be immersed in the awe of Mother Nature and the very strong connection that our indigenous brothers and sisters have with the land. It also highlighted the genuine concerns and needs of our indigenous population, especially those living in remote communities and our call as Christians to live the gospel and respond to these needs in contemporary, authentic and wise ways. It was hard not to be moved by the students at Santa Teresa – despite having little in the way of materialistic possessions, they indeed have what I refer to as an “infectious happiness” about them – proudly smiling and more than happy to share a humorous story or two with us. You can’t help but reflect on our own lives and communities and what it is that really makes us happy.

Sports DayWhat a great day Sports Day was! I would sincerely like to thank all those involved with the planning and organisation of the day especially the Be Active Committee who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all happen…for the second time this year! It was terrific to see so many family members present and supporting the day – it provided a wonderful sense of community. Thanks also to the grounds staff and other employees for their support in getting the venue ready and ensuring the event ran smoothly. I thought the boys were fantastic and entered into the right spirit from start to finish.

Year 9 SocialGood luck to our Year 9 students who I am sure will represent our school with pride as they attend the annual social at Marymount on Friday night. I’m sure to see some impressive moves on the dance floor!

In light of my recent trip to Alice Springs, I might leave you with Psalm 90:2

“Before the mountains were born, you gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.”

Have a great week.

You are invited to join us each Monday and Friday for Mass in our School Chapel at 8:55 am and for a cuppa afterwards. Three Masses are held in the Hall – The Welcome Mass, Feast of Sacred Heart and Celebration of the Assumption.

If you or the boys’ grandparents (or any other family members or friends) would like to join this group, you’d be most welcome. Just come.

For your Reflection…Sharyn Davis Assistant Principal, Religious Identity and Mission (APRIM)

As many of you already know I will be filling in for Jen Callanan during Term 4 while she is enjoying long service leave. I am looking forward to working with the boys in a different capacity and with the wider school and parish community. Jen has asked me to pass on her best wishes for the term, particularly the Year 9 boys preparing for their transition to their senior school years.

Term 4 is a short but busy term for us. The Year 6 and 7 students will have the opportunity to celebrate mass in our chapel with Father John, members of our local parish and their family and friends. At this time they will continue the long tradition the Middle School has of reaching out to those in need by supporting pregnant Refugee women at Invabrackie Detention Centre and Hutt St Centre with donations. With Christmas less than ten weeks away these agencies and many others are looking to the community for help in providing not only the basics but something special for those struggling at this time.

KEYNOTE AND WORKSHOP WITH DAVID PRICE OBE

Re-imagining an education worth having

What kind of school, what kind of educator and what kind of me for what image of the child?

A presentation and workshop for parents/carers, students and educators

David’s talk will challenge us to re-think the way we interact, teach, and use social, formal and informal learning to engage children and young people in an education worth having. We will explore the opportunities our ‘connected’ and ‘open’ world offers to best prepare children and young people for a future where we cannot predict what jobs will exist. The much talked about 21st century skills require us to re-think the way we interact, teach, and use social, formal and informal learning.

The workshop will explore: • Our image of the child or young person as

a learner? • What young people consider is an

education worth having? • What learning looks like in schools today

and how might it look in the future? • How do we challenge attitudes, beliefs

and behaviours that inhibit effective partnerships between parents and teachers and young people in learning and schooling?

• Ways and strategies of connecting to achieve the best outcomes for children and young people.

Transition Day Transition Day was one of the highlights of the year so far for the Year 9 students. It is a chance where the graduating classes of Sacred Heart College Middle School and Marymount to come together and take part in activities to get each other more acquainted for their move to the Senior school in Year 10.

The day began with a quiz, where both the boys and girls tested their mental skills to win some small prizes. After recess it was time for activities from cooking to ultimate frisbee. There was a wide range of activities to accommodate the different interests of the students. These activities would not outshine the number one activity of the day, ‘dance practice’. From the barn dance to the military two step, the boys all took part busting out their moves with the girls, skills they will have to use at the upcoming Year 9 Social on Friday 17 October.

Altogether the day was a great success. To many of the boys and girls, future friendships have been made and the excitement of moving to Sacred Heart College Senior is now even more so in the minds of most Year 9s from both campuses.

Languages Fiesta!Konnichi wa and Ciao…this week has been an exciting and exhilarating one for the Year 7 students studying Italian and Japanese.

Japanese – Obentou boxes. In Term 3 students were studying Japanese foods. Obentou boxes are a very important cultural component of Japanese daily life. Students researched, designed and made their own Obentou box. OISHIKATTA おいしかった An invitation was extended to our Japanese friends studying English at Flinders University who also participated in the making of our nutritious and delicious Obentou boxes. Thanks to Indah (Study Tour Coordinator) at Intensive English Language Institute and all the Japanese students who participated in the activity with us. Tanoshikatta desu! たのしかった です。We enjoyed!

Italian – our yearly visit to Fogolar Furlan Italian Club was another successful event. This is a great event where students eat a DELIZIOSO Italian dish – one group was extremely fortunati to eat home made lasagne and cotoletta (chicken schnitzel). Buon Appetito!! The boys then learn the skill of bocce which is a highly recognised International sport. After learning the art of bowling in Italian style and manoeuvring close to the ‘boccino’, students skills improved dramatically in the short space of time. Many ‘grazie’ to our wonderful Signore – mamma and nonna who volunteered their time to help with supervision – in particular, Signore Rebecca and Angela. Grazie grazie grazie…

Pedal Prix Sacred Heart College Middle School had three teams competing in the world renowned Australian International Pedal Prix that was held at the Sturt Reserve at Murray Bridge over the weekend of 20–21 September 2014. This is a fantastic community event which we look forward to each year. SHCMS has been actively involved for twenty years and we were joined again by Marymount College with their two teams in the four race series.

This is an SA Great Award Winning Major Event with over 4,000 riders and 36,000 spectators actively involved over the two days. There were 216 teams of riders who kept their vehicle going through the 24 hour event in the warm day and cold overnight conditions.

There were 160 people from Sacred Heart College and Marymount College in our Pit Areas 78 – 81. This worked very well with both schools sharing Diesel Generator hire costs and power and lighting.

Students had been busily training for this event for the past two months training at Victoria Park. Nothing can prepare you though for the 216 vehicles on a 2.15 KM track all flying around at incredible speed. Some of the faster vehicles overtake through a tiny gap or just force their way in.

It was very pleasing to have the support of our parent and wider community to assist with the catering, marshalling and other volunteering jobs required to make this such an enjoyable experience for the students and all concerned. The boys showed great spirit, endeavour and teamwork over the two days of racing. They always encouraged each other to do well.

Thank you to our wonderful sponsors who assisted financially or with goods in kind to make our 2014 Pedal Prix a fantastic success. Thank you, your help is greatly appreciated.

The Berry Family, Rick Bayliss from Brown Dog Fencing, Rob Davey from Complete Ute, Van & 4WD Hire, Silvio Martinez, Andrew Morrow from Express Property Maintenance and Noel McArthy from The Bike Station. A special thanks to Robyn Flowers and Peter Sawley who coordinated the catering and cooking at Murray Bridge and who was a constant support to the team.

Special thanks must also go to the following staff; Stuart Ashman, Sonja Brownridge, Ashleigh Bryans and Roger French for the many hours put into preparing the three Pedal Prix vehicles for the big race, training, organisation for the event, planning, setting up the Pit Area and pack up. Thanks to the parents who helped tow our gear to Murray Bridge (and back) in their trailers and to those who took turns as Team Managers, cooking, etc. over the two days.

Very well done to the ten riders in the Year 6/7 team vehicle “SPACE COYOTE” comprising: - Anthony Bosnakis, Kalvin Caggiano-Sims, Hayden Chapman, Patrick Clarke, Jayden Cooper,

Emmanuel Deng, Isaac Jessep, Zachary Munn, Oliver Neilson and Hayden Supple who rode 190 laps which is a distance of 408 kms for an average speed of 17 kph. They finished 64th in their Primary Age Group of 67 Teams and finished 212th overall out of 216 Teams. These boys did it tough with only 2/3 of a team! – but they did themselves proud and rode hard in adversity without complaint.

Well done to the thirteen riders in the Year 6/7 team vehicle “AVATAR” comprising Brendan Breen, Scott Brownridge, Michael Castellano, Nigel Chakabva, Harrison Davey, Dante De Ieso, Aiden Gorringe, Michael Green, Liam Hann, Angus Keogh, Peter Ralph, Emmanuel Smith and Kyle Tamassy who rode 222 laps which is a distance of 477 kms for an average speed of 20 kph. They finished 47th in their Primary Age Group of 67 Teams and finished 191st overall out of 216 Teams.

Congratulations to the fifteen riders in the Year 8/9 team vehicle “HEARTBEAT” comprising Dominic Berry, Harrie Bottroff, Alex Burrow, Liam Byrne, Ethan Cale, Tristan Camilleri, Lachlan Frances, Joshua Hughes, Aaron Jones, Justin Koenig, Kyle Roberts, Caleb Rothe, Max Spurling, Lewis Walker and Cameron Wirtz-Fielding who rode 255 laps which is a distance of 548 kms for an average speed of 23 kph. They finished 41st in their Lower Secondary Age Group of 51 Teams and finished 154th overall out of 216 Teams.

It was great to have the friendly rivalry between all teams and the girls from Marymount College and for the first time the SHC teams of HeartBeat and Avatar defeated the two Marymount teams.

PS: The winning Pedal Prix Team – Platt Racing rode an incredible 533 laps which is a distance of 1,146 KM’s! That’s Adelaide to Sydney in 24 hours. That is an Average speed of 48 KPH! The fastest lap record was 2.18 for the 2.15 km lap distance (on lap 1) which is an average speed of 65 KPH! Now that’s fast!
