LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul’s best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corin-thians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Roman Catholics, our marriage practices have their pedigree in ancient Rome. One of the major players in shaping our practices was the warfare involved in building an empire. Soldiers vanished and sometimes never returned. Women began to manage their lives and to make decisions. The old family values were replaced by patriotic ones, and religion was more attuned to the gore and glory of battle, a religion of the state, not of the family. Weddings were still family celebrations, but had a public face. The bride wore a white toga and a red veil and walked to her new home. There, she and her husband joined their right hands and gave consent to each other, not relying on her father to give consent for her. Religion was optional: a pagan priest might be invited or not, and even without the ceremony, society agreed by common law that a year of living together equaled marriage consent. By the same token, marriage by consent also meant divorce was on the same legal footing, and did not require the courts or civil declarations. This is the world-view the first Christians inherited, and it was up to them to determine what was good and to hold marriage up to the light of the gospel. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Always Forward, Never Back

Thank You for your Stewardship

Your continued generosity for the week of January 16 & 17, 2016 totaled

$11,129 and $1,573 in electronic contributions. The second collection for Restoration and Maintenance was

$2,393.50. God Bless you for your generous support!

When most of us think of Baptism, we think about immersion in Holy Water. However, for St. Paul, the water is secondary to something else — namely the Holy Spirit. Specifically, Paul says, “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.” It is this Spirit which makes us one, a unified body in Christ. That is what makes us one, regardless of who we are. Paul uses the illustration of a human body to prompt us as to what it means to

be part of a Catholic community of faith. We may not look the same, and we may not even function the same, but that is the key to our lives of stewardship. We are truly one, united through Baptism and united in Jesus Christ. Pope Francis shares a story of a time he bap-tized the seven children of single mother. After the baptisms, she said to the Pope (to be) “Father, you make me feel so important,” to which the Pope replied, “Where do I come in? It is Jesus who makes you feel important.” We are one, and each of us is important, united through the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU…

Dear Parishioners, We often speak about sharing our time, talent and treasure as a true form of stewardship. So many of you give selflessly of your time and talent and for that we are truly grateful. Your support of our parish community in the form of treasure during the period of December 24th through December 27th was amazing! Your gifts totaled $32,847. I thank you for your spirit of generosity and for the many ways you give to support our beloved Carmel Mission Basilica. —Fr. Paul

Carmel Mission Book Club News The Book Club is reading and discussing The Betrothed, considered Italy’s greatest novel and a masterpiece of world literature, as well as a favor-ite of Pope Francis. Set in Lombardy (now Tuscany in northern Italy) in the 1600’s, and recently retrans-lated to modern English. The novel weaves issues of faith, justice, power, and truth into a powerful clas-sic. This is a masterwork by Alessandro Manzoni. The Book Club meets each Saturday at 2pm in MacMahon. All are welcome to attend and join in the discussion. It isn’t necessary to attend every session. Call Deacon Bill at 646-0358 for more information.

Wheelchairs Available: Wheel-chairs are available in the Museum Gift Store for anyone needing mobility as-sistance while visiting. The irregular surfaces around the Mission can make it difficult for parishioners to get from their cars to the Basilica. Please let the staff know and they will be happy to assist you.

Why I Teach in a Catholic School People have often asked me why I teach in a Catholic school. It is decision I made early on in my career. I was a product of 12 years of Catholic education. I believe it helped shape me into the person I am today. It was critical in my moral development and made me aware of God’s ever-present grace and goodness in my life. God granted me the gift of teaching–a joy I never felt in any other job I held. I feel it is my vocation. But why a Catholic school? First I would say the strong sense of community that comes from a shared faith. Our Catholic identity permeates every relationship throughout our school, whether it is faculty-to-faculty, faculty-to-student or faculty-to-parent. It is who we are individually and collectively. Teachers are not in competition with one another. We support, sustain and assist each other. We encourage and rejoice in the achievements of all. Our relationship with our students is both personally and professionally rewarding. We humbly try to “teach as Jesus did.” The truest gift we give our students is acceptance, care, and the love of Christ. Each teacher cares about the kind of person each student grows up to be. We strive to help them succeed academically, socially and as our Superintendent of Schools, Kathleen Radecke says, “make them fit for Heaven.” I believe parents choose Junípero Serra School because it supports their family values and beliefs. The faculty and staff make a team with the parents to help each student move in a positive direction on all levels. Each teacher strives to awaken in each student their potential and support them on this journey. In addition I love teaching at JSS because it is a physically and emotionally safe place that allows students to be open to the gifts of the Spirit and allow the joy of Christ to enter their hearts. It is a good place to be for teachers, parents and students. I have been at JSS since the fall of 1988, most of my teaching career. I would not have it any other way. This is home for me and it’s a great place to be! Catholic Schools Week is coming up from January 31st through February 6th. Next week you will hear more about the warm, welcoming community that is Junípero Serra School. Don’t forget to vote for our app in the Verizon Innovation App Challenge. Text FITA1 or FITA2 to 22333. Thank you, Carmel Mission! (and please help JSS one more time!)

As noted in the JSS article this week on page eight, six of our 8th graders received recognition as “Best in State” for California Middle Schools for the App Concept in the Verizon Innovative App Competition! Since then, we have learned that the team has now been recognized as “Best in Region” for the western United States. We are now in National Competition and also in the Fan Appreciation Competition. Every-one can text one vote to 22333 and vote for ‘FITA1’, the project name for the JSS group. Votes must be texted no later than January 31, 2016, the beginning of Catholic Schools Week. One can only vote once per phone so please spread the word to your friends and neighbors around the world, asking them to help Carmel Mission’s Junípero Serra School. Thank you for always supporting our endeavors. Together Everyone Achieves More!

(at the foot of Wharf 2), Monterey

Our speaker will be Sr. Gloria Loya. Sister Gloria earned her D.Min. at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, and served for many years as Adjunct Professor of Theology and Hispanic Ministry at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. She now serves the Diocese of Monterey as Vicar for Religious and Human Trafficking Liaison. Sister Gloria’s topic will be “The Year of Mercy”. Our discussion will look at the theology of mercy and its role in our lives today. This will be a great way to focus ourselves for the year ahead! Join us to enjoy the discussion along with food, drinks, and friends! Join Monterey Theology on Tap on Facebook! You can also send questions to Deacon Warren Hoy at [email protected]. We hope to see you there!
