Anyone who thinks that equality forwomen in business is a new idea just has-n’t heard about ABBIE J. HUNTER. Shehad it going nearly 100 years ago in SanFrancisco. There, in 1889, she organizedand operated a business called TheWomen’s Real Estate InvestmentCompany. Just how this reacted on hermale competitors is left to your imagina-tion. In any case, someone (anotherwoman!) sued her for “misappropriationof funds.” Eventually she was acquittedand turned her attention to Carmel. Shelearned that Mr. S.J. Duckworth was hav-ing problems with his development here,made him an offer he couldn’t refuse andbecame his partner. Her merchandisingapproach was quite different. She extend-ed Ocean Avenue down to the sea, causeda rather elaborate bathhouse to be built onthe beach, and built a boardwalk from thebathhouse to the Pine Inn, newly built atthe corner of Monte Verde. She directedher effort to selling lots north of ocean andwest of Junipero. Possibly because she wasunder-capitalized, or the Southern Pacificfailed to extend its line, or she was just tooearly — whatever, the project failed andshe tossed the torch (and land) to Messrs.Devendorf and Powers in 1902. Manyladies have joined the real estate rankshere since ABBIE, and they probably oweher a hug.
